Book Theoretical Determination of Low drag Supercavitating Hydrofoils and Their Two dimensional Characteristics at Zero Cavitation Number

Download or read book Theoretical Determination of Low drag Supercavitating Hydrofoils and Their Two dimensional Characteristics at Zero Cavitation Number written by Virgil E. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Two new low-drag hydrofoils for operation at zero cavitation number are derived by the application of the Tulin-Burkart linearized theory. The two-dimensional lift-drag ratios of these two hydrofoils operating at design angle of attack are shown to be, theoretically, about 45 and 80 percent greater than the Tulin-Burkart configuration. A simplified calculation of the location of the upper cavity streamline for arbitrary configurations is also presented.

Book Measurement of Cavity Shapes Above Ventilated Hydrofoils

Download or read book Measurement of Cavity Shapes Above Ventilated Hydrofoils written by R. J. Altmann and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent test programs indicate that theoretical streamlines above a supercavitating hydrofoil may be considerably higher than those actually generated. To check theoretical predictions a three-dimensional traversing probe was constructed and used to map the upper cavity surfaces generated by two different two-dimensional hydrofoils. Experimental contours were found to fall below those predicted by theory at all angles of attack and depths of submergence tested. The rate of change of cavity ordinates with changes in angle of attack or depth of submergence is about the same as that predicted by theory. The contribution of angle of attack to cavity shape is responsible for the greater part of the difference between theoretical and measured cavity shapes. (Author).

Book Supercavitation

Download or read book Supercavitation written by Igor Nesteruk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-13 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection is dedicated to the 70th jubilee of Yu. N. Savchenko, and presents experimental, theoretical, and numerical investigations written by an international group of well-known authors. The contributions solve very important problems of the high-speed hydrodynamics, such as supersonic motion in water, drag diminishing, dynamics and stability of supercavitating vehicles, water entry and hydrodynamic performances of hydrofoils, ventilated cavities after a disc and under the ship bottom. The book is written for researches, scientists, engineers, and students interested in problems of hydromechanics.

Book Marine Propellers and Propulsion

Download or read book Marine Propellers and Propulsion written by John Carlton and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the propeller lies submerged out of sight, it is a complex component in both the hydrodynamic and structural sense. This book fulfils the need for a comprehensive and cutting edge volume that brings together a great range of knowledge on propulsion technology, a multi-disciplinary and international subject. The book comprises three main sections covering hydrodynamics; materials and mechanical considerations; and design, operation and performance. The discussion relates theory to practical problems of design, analysis and operational economy, and is supported by extensive design information, operational detail and tabulated data. Fully updated and revised to cover the latest advances in the field, the new edition now also includes four new chapters on azimuthing and podded propulsors, propeller-rudder interaction, high-speed propellers, and propeller-ice interaction.·The most complete book available on marine propellers, fully updated and revised, with four new chapters on azimuthing and podded propulsors, propeller-rudder interaction, high-speed propellers, and propeller-ice interaction·A valuable reference for marine engineers and naval architects gathering together the subject of propulsion technology, in both theory and practice, over the last forty years ·Written by a leading expert on propeller technology, essential for students of propulsion and hydrodynamics, complete with online worked examples

Book Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of Arbitrary Aspect Ratio Supercavitating Hydrofoils Operating Near the Free Water Surface

Download or read book Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of Arbitrary Aspect Ratio Supercavitating Hydrofoils Operating Near the Free Water Surface written by Virgil E. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The existing two-dimensional theory for the characteristics of supercavitating hydrofoils operating at zero cavitation number is modified to include the effects of camber, aspect ratio, and depth of submersion. For a comparison with the theory, two aspect-ratio-1 hydrofoils, a flat plate and one with a cambered lower surface, were tested by operating them near the water surface so that their upper surfaces were completely ventilated. The data obtained verified the theory to within 3 percent. Some experimental data are also presented for the models operating at nonzero cavitation number for both air and water-vapor-filled cavities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains edited papers from IABEM-90, the 1990 Symposium of the Interna tional Association for Boundary Element Methods (IABEM). As stated in the By-Laws of the Association, the purposes of IABEM are: 1. to promote the international exchange of technical information related to the devel opment and application of boundary-integral equation (BIE) formulations and their numerical implementation to problems in engineering and science, commonly referred to as the boundary element method (BEM); 2. to promote research and development activities for the advancement of boundary integral equation methods and boundary element solution algorithms; 3. to foster closer personal relationships within the BEM community of researchers. The objectives of the Symposium, in line with those of the Association, was to provide a forum where the two "souls" of the Association, i. e. , (i) mathematical foundations and numerical aspects, and (ii) engineering applications could be integrated. We believe that the first aspect has been neglected in too many of the BEM Symposia held in the past, which, with a few exceptions (notably, the IUTAM Symposia on the subject) have emphasized the practical aspects of the method. As a consequence, we have tried to give a stronger emphasis to the more theoretical issues: this is attested for instance, by the fact that the two general lectures were given by Prof. Gaetano Fichera, of the University of Rome "La Sapienza," and Prof.
