Book Cavalry Studies From Two Great Wars Classic Reprint

Download or read book Cavalry Studies From Two Great Wars Classic Reprint written by Jean Jacques Theophile Bonie and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cavalry Studies From Two Great Wars The three monographs united in this volume are each believed to possess peculiar and positive merit. The work of Colonel (now General) Bonie appeared very soon after the close of the Franco-German War, having been written, as it were, in the smoke of battle. In this respect it differs materially from the book of Major Kaehler, which is a recent production, and now makes its appearance in English for the first time. While Kaehler, unlike Bonie, does not write as an eye-witness and with the experience of an actual participator in the events described, he has had the advantage of historical researches which were not available to the French author, and though his book is naturally a less vivid picture, it can doubtless lay claim to greater historical accuracy than that of its companion. The essay on "The Operations of the Cavalry in the Gettysburg Campaign," by Lieutenant-Colonel George B. Davis, U.S.A., first appeared in the Journal of the U. S. Cavalry Association, several years ago; but it has been revised by its author especially for the International Series. It is presented in this volume, not only because of its intrinsic merit as a study of the methods of the cavalry in one of our greatest campaigns, but also because of the picture it presents of the screening and reconnoitering duty of cavalry more than seven years before the performance of similar duty by the German cavalry astonished Europe as with a new discovery in war. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Cavalry: Studies on Its Role in the Warfare of to-Day With Notes on Training for War Service The tumult and shouting Of the world war has had a little time to die down. Throughout its course and for some time afterward it was impossible to clarify ideas and to deduce lessons. These require a certain amount of perspective for their better rendering. This perspective has been a little furnished by the passage of time. Time is a cold analyst who makes tangible the real causes and effects and relegates the merely subsidiary to a nebulous background. Out of the haze and smoke of conflict we can begin to see dimly the simple primitive forces that were at war and to see the underlying causes that make for victory or defeat. In freeing the mind from the thralldom of the present, in deliberately comparing this war with all wars, the mind Of the military student becomes amazed at the simplicity of the predominating factors in warfare. This last war has complicated the issue by the use in battle of a larger variety Of innovations in the way Of auxiliaries and mechanical aids, than any war in history. The aeroplane and the tank and a host of like aids have a tendency to obsess the mind Of the unthinking to the exclusion of the important factors in victory or defeat, to the real forces that battle for ascendency. Book Cavalry in Modern War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Cavalry in Modern War Classic Reprint written by F. Chenevix Trench and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cavalry in Modern War IT has been said that a great general, like a great poet, is born, not made; and if this be true at all in any peculiar sense, it is true of the cavalry general, who must be well endowed with the gifts of nature before he begins to develop them by study and practice. But there is another saying, quite as true as the first, that genius consists in a capacity for taking trouble. One might drive a coach and six through either of these sayings, but there is an element of truth in both of them. No short-sighted, slow-thinking, muddle-headed man can make a good officer of any kind, least of all a good cavalry officer. But it would be quite as great an error to expect great things from one whose mind never rises above field sports and athletics. As a matter of fact, the Frederics and N apoleons of history have been thorough students as well as practical soldiers, and an officer who does not read can never, in these days, hope to excel. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Second Regiment: West Virginia Cavalry Volunteers, During the War of the Rebellion If it is true that he is a benefactor who causes two blades of grass to grow' where only one grew before, then it may be said that he who causes two facts to stand out in bold relief where only one fact appeared before, is a friend to truth and a conservator of history; and if he brings a multitude of facts that otherwise would have been lost to sight, surehr he is to be commended, and his motives not to he misconstrued. The author of this work needs not to apologize for bringing it forth.
