Book The Case Cutlery Dynasty

Download or read book The Case Cutlery Dynasty written by Brad Lockwood and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Case Cutlery Dynasty: Tested XX is the extraordinary story of America's oldest and largest family of knife makers. Since the Civil War, four generations of relations have started over 30 cutlery companies, creating some of the most collected knives in the world. Their products are as rugged as the masters who made them. The Case family was, and remains, a melting pot of personalities - some as wild as the West they helped to settle. The book is written by a Case descendant, Brad Lockwood, who is an award-winning author of four books and was raised in Little Valley, New York - once known as 'The Village of Knives.' Covering 140 years of artisans in business, all related by blood but fiercely competitive, The Case Cutlery Dynasty shows how history becomes mythology over time, money is sometimes thicker than blood, and how a single family from humble beginnings came to dominate an important American industry.

Book Growing Up in the Bradford Oil Fields

Download or read book Growing Up in the Bradford Oil Fields written by Jim Messer and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bradford Oil Field is the oldest producing oil field in the world, and from it comes the very best grade of crude oil in the world. This book tells of the first discovery of oil in the USA by the Seneca Indians at Cuba, NY in 1627, and of the first drilled oil well at Titusville, PA in 1859. There are photos of old time drilling rigs, power-houses, and pumping jacks, along with descriptions of how they operated. There is a section devoted to the dangers of nitroglycerin used to shoot the wells, and of one man in particular (my father) who survived that dangerous occupation. Several pages are devoted to the things other people remember when they too grew up in the oil patch. The book up-dates us as to current drilling operations in 2008, "There's Still Oil in Them Thar Hills", and ends with the introduction of a brand new way to refine crude oil that will reduce the cost of refining a gallon of gasoline by fifty-percent or more.

Book A Sketch of the Early Settlement of Olean

Download or read book A Sketch of the Early Settlement of Olean written by Maud D. Brooks and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-11-21 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sketch of the Early Settlement of Olean: And Its Founder, Major Adam Hoops It seemed necessary to begin the sketch with a brief synopsis of the colonial history of New York, naming the divisions and sub-divisions that have been made from time to time, and the several jurisdictions that the territory, now embraced within the limits of Cattaraugus county, has been under since the Revolutionary period. Heretofore little or nothing has been known concerning Major Adam Hoops, and many have doubted whether he ever visited his purchase in Western New York. The letters quoted are proof that he not only visited frequently the settlement at Olean Point, but was famil iar with all the territory in the western part of the state. M. D. B. Book Pittsburg Shawmut Northern Railroad

Download or read book Pittsburg Shawmut Northern Railroad written by Ken Clark and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2016 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pittsburg (no "h"), Shawmut & Northern Railroad was described by locals as a railroad that "started nowhere and ended no place, with a lot of nothing in between," although it actually linked the coal mines of Elk County, Pennsylvania, with markets in Cattaraugus, Allegany, and Steuben Counties in central and western New York State. Always an underdog, the Class I line went into bankruptcy a mere five years after its corporate birth, holding the record for the longest receivership of any American railroad at 42 years. Always starved for cash, it limped along with outdated and tired equipment, yet it never failed to meet its payroll. It was scrapped completely in 1947.
