Au début du XXIe siècle, malgré quelques faux pas encore, les relations entre les Eglises chrétiennes et les Juifs sont amicales. En France, les hiérarchies des Eglises chrétiennes et la majorité des chrétiens reconnaissent leur héritage provenant du judaïsme. Mais le chemin a été long et, à n'en pas douter, la découverte de l'horreur de la Shoah a ébranlé les consciences, éveillé les esprits. Les photos des charniers, les témoignages des rescapés que l'on pouvait entendre, si l'on écoutait, dès le lendemain de la guerre ont interpellé des chrétiens. Les Églises ont-elles eu leur part de responsabilité en répandant l'antijudaïsme par l'" enseignement du mépris " (Jules Isaac) et ont-elles ensuite laissé faire ? Le cheminement fut lent et le parcours parsemé d'embûches : hésitations d'un Marrou envers l'Amitié judéo-chrétienne dès ses débuts, frilosité, sinon hostilité, de l'Église catholique dans l'affaire Finaly, etc. Et même après le concile Vatican Il et la publication de Nostra AEtate, les partisans d'un dialogue judéo-chrétien eurent à batailler, comme l'ont montré les affaires du carmel d'Auschwitz et celle de la béatification d'Edith Stein ou d'Isabelle la Catholique. Le rapprochement judéo-chrétien est-il une conséquence de la Shoah ? Si la Shoah a peut-être permis aux chrétiens, et surtout aux catholiques, de reconnaître leur filiation envers le judaïsme, quelques belles figures sont aussi à l'origine de ce revirement : les pères Dabosville, De Goedt, Mgr Decourtray, etc. Et bien sûr le cardinal Lustiger. Il faut aussi mesurer à leur juste valeur les efforts accomplis par les Juifs convertis au catholicisme pour faire le lien entre les deux religions que le pape Jean-Paul Il appelait à la fraternité. Le dossier rassemblé par Danielle Delmaire et Georges Bensoussan présente des études, des documents mais aussi plusieurs témoignages des acteurs de cette sorte de teshouvah. ln fine, aura-t-il fallu la Shoah pour éradiquer - mais l'est-il vraiment complètement ? - l'antijudaïsme chrétien ?

We might have forgotten an earlier exodus during the aftermath of the Second World War in the opposite direction. Jewish survivors of the Holocaust aimed for Palestine, and after 1948, the State of Israel. Protestants from the Netherlands, Switzerland, America and Germany intended to join the Jewish people in their new homeland by building the village Nes Ammim. The Netherlands had been occupied during the war; Switzerland had remained neutral. Germany carried the taints of guilt and defeat, the United States the laurels of the victor. What made them work together? And why did the Americans and the Swiss withdraw in 1967, the year of the Six-Day War? The many questions surrounding this village do not end here. Nes Ammim was founded near Akko in 1962. Just fourteen years earlier, a majority of the local population had been Druze or Arab. Most of the Arabs ended up as refugees, and their land was repurposed for the kibbutzim. How did Protestants relate to these events? It is not the intention of the author to impose present-day views onto the Christian founders of Nes Ammim. The challenge of understanding their mindset within the context of their time is e exactly what makes them so fascinating.

Book excerpt: In Socialism of Fools, Michele Battini focuses on the critical moment during the Enlightenment in which anti-Jewish stereotypes morphed into a sophisticated, modern social anti-Semitism. He recovers the potent anti-Jewish, anticapitalist propaganda that cemented the idea of a Jewish conspiracy in the European mind and connects it to the atrocities that characterized the Jewish experience in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Beginning in the eighteenth century, counter-Enlightenment intellectuals and intransigent Catholic writers singled out Jews for conspiring to exploit self-sustaining markets and the liberal state. These ideas spread among socialist and labor movements in the nineteenth century and intensified during the Long Depression of the 1870s. Anti-Jewish anticapitalism then migrated to the Habsburg Empire with the Christian Social Party; to Germany with the Anti-Semitic Leagues; to France with the nationalist movements; and to Italy, where Revolutionary Syndicalists made anti-Jewish anticapitalism the basis of an alliance with the nationalists. Exemplified best in the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, the infamous document that "leaked" Jewish plans to conquer the world, the Jewish-conspiracy myth inverts reality and creates a perverse relationship to historical and judicial truth. Isolating the intellectual roots of this phenomenon and its contemporary resonances, Battini shows us why, so many decades after the Holocaust, Jewish people continue to be a powerful political target.

Book excerpt: On October 19, 1876 a group of leading French citizens, both men and women included, joined together to form an unusual group, The Society of Mutual Autopsy, with the aim of proving that souls do not exist. The idea was that, after death, they would dissect one another and (hopefully) show a direct relationship between brain shapes and sizes and the character, abilities and intelligence of individuals. This strange scientific pact, and indeed what we have come to think of as anthropology, which the group's members helped to develop, had its genesis in aggressive, evangelical atheism. With this group as its focus, The End of the Soul is a study of science and atheism in France in late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It shows that anthropology grew in the context of an impassioned struggle between the forces of tradition, especially the Catholic faith, and those of a more freethinking modernism, and moreover that it became for many a secular religion. Among the adherents of this new faith discussed here are the novelist Emile Zola, the great statesman Leon Gambetta, the American birth control advocate Margaret Sanger, and Arthur Conan Doyle, whose Sherlock Holmes embodied the triumph of ratiocination over credulity. Boldly argued, full of colorful characters and often bizarre battles over science and faith, this book represents a major contribution to the history of science and European intellectual history.

Book excerpt: The first comprehensive history of the Vatican’s agenda to defeat the forces of secular liberalism and communism through international law, cultural diplomacy, and a marriage of convenience with authoritarian and right-wing rulers. After the United States entered World War I and the Russian Revolution exploded, the Vatican felt threatened by forces eager to reorganize the European international order and cast the Church out of the public sphere. In response, the papacy partnered with fascist and right-wing states as part of a broader crusade that made use of international law and cultural diplomacy to protect European countries from both liberal and socialist taint. A Twentieth-Century Crusade reveals that papal officials opposed Woodrow Wilson’s international liberal agenda by pressing governments to sign concordats assuring state protection of the Church in exchange for support from the masses of Catholic citizens. These agreements were implemented in Mussolini’s Italy and Hitler’s Germany, as well as in countries like Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland. In tandem, the papacy forged a Catholic International—a political and diplomatic foil to the Communist International—which spread a militant anticommunist message through grassroots organizations and new media outlets. It also suppressed Catholic antifascist tendencies, even within the Holy See itself. Following World War II, the Church attempted to mute its role in strengthening fascist states, as it worked to advance its agenda in partnership with Christian Democratic parties and a generation of Cold War warriors. The papal mission came under fire after Vatican II, as Church-state ties weakened and antiliberalism and anticommunism lost their appeal. But—as Giuliana Chamedes shows in her groundbreaking exploration—by this point, the Vatican had already made a lasting mark on Eastern and Western European law, culture, and society.
