Book Theater as Liturgy in the Post Christian Age

Download or read book Theater as Liturgy in the Post Christian Age written by Matthew Yde and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-05-03 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book-length study of one of the most talented and exciting American playwrights working today. Stephen Adly Guirgis has said that "God is the starting point and the finish line" of his work, and this book identifies him as a playwright with a distinctly Christian sensibility who uses the technique of "inculturation" to translate the gospel for a secular audience. Critics have noted that his plays are peopled with poor, suffering minority figures, but few have also noted that these figures bear a remarkable similarity to the dispossessed with whom Jesus identifies in Matthew 25. Beginning with his early play Den of Thieves and proceeding through each of his dramas, this work examines Guirgis's plays within a biblical context. While noting that Guirgis is a writer of the "post-Christian age" who staunchly resists identification as a "Christian playwright," the book situates him within the tradition of the "drama of ideas" as a powerful writer employing a dialectical method to inculcate the New Testament ethos and transform the theater space into a place of sacrament.

Book Failure Fascism and Teachers in American Theatre

Download or read book Failure Fascism and Teachers in American Theatre written by James F. Wilson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-24 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely and accessible book explores the shifting representations of schoolteachers and professors in plays and performances primarily from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries in the United States. Examining various historical and recurring types, such as spinsters, schoolmarms, presumed sexual deviants, radicals and communists, fascists, and emasculated men teachers, Wilson shines the spotlight on both well-known and nearly-forgotten plays. The analysis draws on a range of scholars from cultural and gender studies, queer theory, and critical race discourses to consider teacher characters within notable education movements and periods of political upheaval. Richly illustrated, the book will appeal to theatre scholars and general readers as it delves into plays and performances that reflect cultural fears, desires, and fetishistic fantasies associated with educators. In the process, the scrutiny on the array of characters may help illuminate current attacks on real-life teachers while providing meaningful opportunities for intervention in the ongoing education wars.

Book The Formation Existence and Deconstruction of the Catholic Stage Guild of Ireland

Download or read book The Formation Existence and Deconstruction of the Catholic Stage Guild of Ireland written by Alex Cahill and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1945, the Irish Catholic Church began a unique relationship with the entertainment industry through an organization known as the Catholic Stage Guild of Ireland. This Guild, whose members included Jimmy O’Dea, Noel Purcell, Cyril Cusack, and Gabriel Fallon, acted as a microcosm of twentieth-century Ireland, dramatically depicting the heartaches and successes of the Irish Catholics. This unprecedented study of the Catholic Stage Guild begins an investigation on the contemporary relationship between the Irish Catholic Church and theatre that, until now, has rarely been examined. Written for those interested in theatre studies, Catholic studies, and Irish studies, the Catholic Stage Guild of Ireland’s persuasion over the theatre population both within and outside the country’s borders proposes a story long overdue to be told – until now.
