The leadership crisis has been most noticeable within the Catholic Primary School sector, where statistics have consistently shown an issue with recruiting people to headship positions. This book considers the reasons for the crisis and looks at potential solutions. It identifies what the leadership crisis encompasses from the negativity of the education system (including headship accountability, the work-life balance, and salary), whilst also offsetting this with possible supporting solutions, such as the value of acting headship, succession planning and talent spotting from the beginning of a teacher’s career.

Each of these tasks can be a full time job, yet the Catholic school principal takes on these tasks day after day, year after year, so that teachers may teach as Jesus did. The goal of this book is to provide both beginning and seasoned Catholic school leaders with some insights that might help them to meet these challenges with a sense of confidence. The words in this text provide research?based approaches for dealing with issues of practice, especially those tasks that are not ordinarily taught in educational leadership programs. This text helps to make sense of the pastoral side of Catholic education, in terms of structures, mission, identity, curriculum, and relationships with the principal’s varied constituencies. Catholic schools developed to move their immigrant and first generation American youth from the Catholic ghetto to successful careers and lives in the American mainstream. However, most importantly, Catholic schools have brought Christ to generations of youngsters. It remains the continuing call of the Catholic school to be a center of Evangelization—a place where Gospel values live in the lives of faculty, students and parents. This text attempts to integrate the unique challenges of the instructional leader of the institution with the historical and theological underpinnings of contemporary Catholic education.

Chapter 2 offers suggestions for developing a crisis-management team within a school. The third chapter focuses on a systematic plan for assessing the level of crisis, involving the team in a process that allows them to develop a more intimate knowledge of the school site and buildings. Flexibility was needed by educational leadership during this time of crisis. For that reason, this study will aim to understand the leadership principles necessary to provide leaders with the flexibility to adapt to extreme circumstances. The literature addresses the leader’s importance of being flexible during a crisis (Ruffner & Huizing, 2016). However, the literature continues to examine the effects of the pandemic on education but has not identified those contingencies that are necessary for leaders in the Christian educational system to face a crisis. Transformational leadership is a powerful way to influence the process utilized by leaders as it “persuades followers to adopt certain behaviors in order to bring about what the leader considers as beneficial change” (Bush, 2018, p. 883). The design that was utilized for this study was a quantitative correlational approach, which was used to measure the degree of relationship between two or more variables (Creswell, 2019). The research and data analyzed aimed at finding if there was a correlation between leadership principles and the contingencies necessary to ensure flexibility when dealing with a crisis for both the research literature and practical applications to educational leadership.
