Of experience with this excellent Primary Curriculum, We asked Monsignor Gilbert to sponsor a Workshop in Asheville, during the Summer of 1956, under the leadership of Sister Mary Janet, sc, and forty five Sisters from the various communities teaching in the Diocese of Raleigh, to begin preparation of a similar course for the Secondary Schools of the Dio cese. For the past three years the same number of sisters have taken part in this Workshop to prepare thirteen Teachers Guides in various High School subjects. During this time wide interest has been shown in this new Course of Studies for Secondary Schools, by various educators, both priests and sisters of Communities other than those working in the Diocese of Raleigh, who have volunteered their assistance, in this preparatory work, which has now been officially adopted for the Secondary Schools of the Diocese of Raleigh. Book excerpt: Although today the largest religious denomination in the United States, until the 1960s, the Roman Catholic Church represented less than 1 percent of the population of North Carolina. Tar Heel Catholics recounts the story of the Catholic Church in what was long called "mission territory" on the doorstep of a rapidly developing American Catholic institutional presence. The explanation of this phenomenon lies in the history of the Deep South itself, including slavery, segregation, and the overwhelming religious dominance of the Baptist church. Tar Heel Catholics relates the great difficulty early churchmen encountered in attempting to establish Catholicism in an inhospitable environment. It was not until 1924 that North Carolina became the last state in the union to gain the status of a diocese.

  • Author : Kimberly Hahn
  • Publisher : Ignatius Press
  • Release : 2012-12-11
  • ISBN : 1681490730

Download or read book Catholic Education written by Kimberly Hahn and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2012-12-11 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two experienced home schooling moms present a very thorough, balanced and practical guide to both the merits of home education, as well as the important ideas, resources and curriculums to home school. Hahn and Hasson cover all aspects - statistics supporting home schooling's excellence, the nitty-gritty of lesson plans, and hundreds of ways to keep the fun in (and boredom out) of learning. Most importantly, they offer compelling advice and inspiration for parents as they undertake their child's religious, moral and intellectual formation. This is a reliable guide for Catholic parents who want to stay close to the heart of the church in the schooling of their children. The authors demonstrate that home schooling is not a fringe movement on the Church's periphery, but it is squarely based on Catholic teachings drawn from Sacred Scripture, natural law, and the writings of saints and popes. Readers will find the right combination of secular and sacred, theoretical and practical. Whether you are looking for advice and encouragement, language resources, aids for teaching multiplication or phonics - or the Ten Commandments - this book is sure to be a very functional tool.

Book Catholic Schools in the Public Interest

Download or read book Catholic Schools in the Public Interest written by Patricia A. Bauch and published by IAP. This book was released on 2014-03-01 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of the contributions of Catholic K-12 schools in the United States to the public interest from the 1800’s to the present. It presents seven strategies that have the possibility of leading Catholic schools in positive, new directions. Outsiders often misunderstand the mission, purpose, and inclusivity of Catholic schools. This book brings a new focus on Catholic schools from the perspective of their service to this country through the education of Catholics and non-Catholics. In 16 chapters, a variety of scholars examine these schools across three periods: echoes of the past, realities of the present, and future directions. The intention of the editor and authors of this volume is that Catholic schools and those interested in conducting Catholic school research will find guidance, especially in examining newer types of partnerships flourishing in different types of Catholic schools in different regions of the country and types of schools from rural, suburban to city and inner-city schools. By increasing the data we have, such studies could help stem the tide of Catholic school demise. In addition, Catholic school leaders, and parents who chose them or are thinking about choosing them, will find here a balanced description of what constitutes a Catholic school and how they are different from public schools. In understanding better the role and function of Catholic schools in serving the public interest, new ideas, innovations, and improvements can help these schools survive and grow.

Book American Catholic Schools in the Twentieth Century

Download or read book American Catholic Schools in the Twentieth Century written by Ann Marie Ryan and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-02-21 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how Catholic educators grappled with public educational policies and reforms like standardization and accreditation, educational measurement and testing, and federal funding for schools during the early to mid-twentieth century. These issues elicited an array of reactions including resistance, cooperation, and co-optation. American Catholics had established one of the largest private educational organizations in the United States by the twentieth century. It rivaled only that of the public school system. At mid-century Catholic schools enrolled some 12 percent of the American school-age population and their enrollments grew in number through the 1960s. The Catholic Church’s lobbying arm, the National Catholic Welfare Conference (NCWC), used its well-earned stature to push for federal funds for students attending their schools. The NCWC succeeded in securing funds with the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 for students needing special education services and students living in poverty attending Catholic schools. This signified a major shift in American education policy. Despite this radical change, Catholic schools lost significant enrollment over the next several decades to public, private, and newly minted public charter schools. Catholic schools faced an increasingly competitive landscape in an ever-expanding school-choice environment that they helped create.
