Book Catena Aurea Commentary On The Four Gospels Collected Out Of The Works Of The Fathers

Download or read book Catena Aurea Commentary On The Four Gospels Collected Out Of The Works Of The Fathers written by S Thomas Aquinas and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2016-03-10 with total page 911 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This antiquarian book contains Thomas Aquinas's "Catena Aurea". It is a comprehensive discussion and analysis of the four Gospels, by some of the greatest theologians to have ever graced the Catholic Church. Aquinas compiled this opus from sermons and commentaries on the Gospels written by the early Church Fathers. He arranged their thoughts in such a way that they form a continuous commentary on each Gospel, verse-by-verse. This book will prove invaluable for serious students of Catholicism, and is not to be missed by the discerning collector. Many vintage texts such as this - particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before - are increasingly hard to come by and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this book now, in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition. It comes complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gospels are the center and climax of Scripture. In them we finally meet Jesus: the anticipated fulfillment of the stories and promises of the Old Testament. In The Four Gospels: Jesus, the Hope of the World, Patrick Schreiner demonstrates the critical importance of the gospel narratives, not only as the stories of our Savior, but also as the climax of God’s story. Schreiner’s close and nuanced readings of the Gospels skillfully illustrate how the stories of Jesus, and even his very words, interact with the preceding testimony of Israel. For each Gospel, he provides outlines, an overview of the book’s content, and an examination of theological themes and emphases. Schreiner concludes each chapter with an examination of the Gospel as a discipleship text, giving insight for what it means to follow Jesus. As part of the Scripture Connections series, The Four Gospels includes helpful sidebars with ancient, biblical, gospel, and life connections. Written in an accessible manner, this book will help readers engage more deeply with the stories of the Savior. The Scripture Connections series is a concise and accessible guide to the Bible that focuses on Scripture's natural unity. Each volume covers a particular set of biblical books, providing a thorough overview of the content and background in a shorter page count than a traditional textbook. The authors bring forward connections between Scripture and the ancient world, other biblical texts, the good news of the gospel, and everyday life, inviting readers to engage more deeply with God's Word.

Book excerpt: The idea of a Jewish Church has been banned from the Christian horizon for almost two millennia. But things are changing. Since the middle of the 70s the Messianic Jewish movement has strived to build an ecclesial home for all Jewish believers in Christ. This new phenomenon brings to life issues that had disappeared since the first centuries of the Church. What does it mean to be a Jew in the Church? Should there be a distinction between Jews and non-Jews among believers in Christ? Is such a distinction compatible with the unity of the whole Body of Christ so ardently preached by Paul? What lifestyle should this Church promote? In his various works, Mark Kinzer, a prominent Messianic Jewish theologian, has attempted to provide substantial answers to these questions. Antoine Lévy is a Dominican priest. With Kinzer, Lévy has launched the “Helsinki Consultation”, a cross-denominational gathering of Jewish theologians. In Jewish Church: A Catholic Approach to Messianic Judaism, Lévy examines Kinzer’s positions critically, bringing forward an alternative vision of what a “Jewish Church” could and should be. This is only the beginning of what promises to be a fascinating discussion.

Book Rethinking the Acceptable Year

Download or read book Rethinking the Acceptable Year written by Christopher James Luthy and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-11-13 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biblical Jubilee has enjoyed increasing prominence in Lukan and missional literature, much of which has been based on suggested Jubilee allusions throughout Luke-Acts (especially Luke 4:16–30). This study questions the presence of such allusions, arguing that the suggested references are better understood within the broader and more explicit tradition of the Basileia of God. Every suggested Lukan textual and thematic reference to the Jubilee is examined, with particular attention given to the Nazareth episode (Luke 4:16–30), which is often cited as the most explicit Jubilee reference. The study also addresses some fundamental issues which have informed recent exegeses, including Luke’s use of the term ἄφεσις, the theme of the Basileia of God throughout Luke-Acts, and the importance of Isaiah 61 (both the first-century traditions that may have influenced Luke, as well as how Luke employed the text throughout his two-part work).

Book A Virtue Ethical View of Trinitarian Sanctification

Download or read book A Virtue Ethical View of Trinitarian Sanctification written by Ronald M. Rothenberg and published by Ronald M. Rothenberg. This book was released on 2014-07-02 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thesis of this book is that virtue ethics is key to understanding Trinitarian progressive sanctification. The thesis is supported by four reasons why virtue ethics is key to understanding Trinitarian progressive sanctification: (1) the Trinity, virtue ethics, and sanctification are historically and conceptually interconnected in the tradition and Scripture, (2) virtue ethics based on metaphysical realism is the most biblically consistent ethical framework for Trinitarian progressive sanctification, (3) Jesus’ active roles as a teacher and example of virtue play an important part in Trinitarian sanctification, and (4) Jesus’ priestly heavenly intercession aimed at manifesting virtue in believers is crucial to understanding how the Trinity progressively sanctifies believers. The active roles of Jesus in sanctification, ordered by the Triune premise, indicate that the Trinity sanctifies such that: (1) the value having its source from the Father, is revealed through the teaching of the Son to motivate believers, who are empowered to be motivated by the Spirit, (2) the character that is from the Father is revealed through the Son’s example that is to be imitated by the believer through habituation and reciprocity, by the Spirit’s leading, and (3) believers are led by the Spirit’s intercession into prayer (Rom 8:14-16, 26-27), to be helped through the Son’s priestly intercession, in order to receive an answer from the Father, with the aim of manifesting the virtues of endurance and hope in the lives of believers.

Book Marsilius of Padua The Defender of the Peace

Download or read book Marsilius of Padua The Defender of the Peace written by Marsilius of Padua and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-11-24 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Defender of the Peace of Marsilius of Padua is a massively influential text in the history of western political thought. Marsilius offers a detailed analysis and explanation of human political communities, before going on to attack what he sees as the obstacles to peaceful human coexistence - principally the contemporary papacy. Annabel Brett's authoritative rendition of the Defensor Pacis was the first new translation in English for fifty years, and a major contribution to the series of Cambridge Texts: all of the usual series features are provided, included chronology, notes for further reading, and up-to-date annotation aimed at the student reader encountering this classic of medieval thought for the first time. This edition of The Defender of the Peace is a scholarly and a pedagogic event of great importance, of interest to historians, political theorists, theologians and philosophers at all levels from second-year undergraduate upwards.
