Book Catchment and River Basin Management

Download or read book Catchment and River Basin Management written by Laurence Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-17 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central focus of this volume is a critical comparative analysis of the key drivers for water resource management and the provision of clean water – governance systems and institutional and legal arrangements. The authors present a systematic analysis of case study river systems drawn from Australia, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, UK and USA to provide an integrated global assessment of the scale and key features of catchment management. A key premise explored is that despite the diversity of jurisdictions and catchments there are commonalities to a successful approach. The authors show that environmental and public health water quality criteria must be integrated with the economic and social goals of those affected, necessitating a 'twin-track' and holistic (cross-sector and discipline) approach of stakeholder engagement and sound scientific research. A final synthesis presents a set of principles for adaptive catchment management. These principles demonstrate how to integrate the best scientific and technical knowledge with policy, governance and legal provisions. It is shown how decision-making and implementation at the appropriate geographic and governmental scales can resolve conflicts and share best sustainable practices.

Book Handbook of Catchment Management

Download or read book Handbook of Catchment Management written by Robert C. Ferrier and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-07-01 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HANDBOOK OF CATCHMENT MANAGEMENT In 2010, the first edition of the Handbook of Catchment Management provided a benchmark on how our understanding and actions in water management within a catchment context had evolved in recent decades. Over ten years on, the catchment management concept is entering a new phase of development aligned to contemporary and future challenges. These include climate change uncertainty, further understanding in ecological functioning under change, the drive for a low-carbon, energy efficient and circular society, multiple uses of water, the emergence of new pollutants of concern, new approaches to valuation, finance and pricing mechanisms, stewardship and community engagement, the integration of water across the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and the link between water, energy and food. These developments are framed within an increasingly data rich world where new analytics, sensor technology and processing power are informing increasingly real-time decision making. The challenge is also to increase cross-compliance and policy integration to meet multiple stakeholder objectives, and to link actions to achieve cost-effective outcomes. In addition, there are a number of new and exciting city, region and basin-scale real-world examples of contemporary and new catchment thinking; integrating science, technology, knowledge and governance to address multiple drivers and complex problems from across the globe. The time is now right, to capture the new challenges facing catchment management and water resources management globally. This revised and updated edition of the Handbook of Catchment Management features: Thoroughly rewritten chapters which provide an up-to-date view of catchment management issues and contexts New case study material highlighting multi-sectoral management in different globally significant basins and different geographical locations Up-to-date topics selected for their resonance not only in natural sciences and engineering, but also in other fields, such as socio-economics, law and policy The Handbook is designed for a broad audience, but will be particularly useful for advanced students, researchers, academics and water sector professionals such as planners, consultants and regulators.

Book Urban River Corridor Management

Download or read book Urban River Corridor Management written by Paul Gaskell and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2024-05-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether you have a statutory responsibility for urban river corridors, or you are a local resident with concerns about how watercourses are managed in your town or city, this book can help. There are significant challenges when balancing infrastructure, property development and flood risk with the essential ecosystem goods and services provided by urban watercourses. The behaviour and functions of rivers are highly counter-intuitive and span multiple specialist disciplines. Adjusting one element within a river corridor can have far reaching, unintended impacts on a range of other functions. As a result, it is important to use the best current knowledge and information to make management decisions. Because healthy urban watercourses have the potential to provide massive societal and financial benefits, it is imperative to manage them to the best possible standards. Passive cooling protection from urban heat island effects, better public health due to air quality improvements, rainfall and floodwater management capacity, refugia for pollinating insects helping to promote food security and wellbeing benefits of urban green spaces are just a few of the essential services generated by urban river corridors. Use this book from the Wild Trout Trust as a tool to help guide more effective decisions affecting urban river corridor management. It can form a reference for negotiations between different stakeholders - or equally can be used to inform proactive creation of sustainable policies. Combining specialist expertise across multiple disciplines will help create a better future for our urban spaces.

Book Adaptive Catchment Management and Reservoir Operation

Download or read book Adaptive Catchment Management and Reservoir Operation written by Guangtao Fu and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: River catchments and reservoirs play a central role in water security, food supply, flood risk management, hydropower generation, and ecosystem services; however, they are now under increasing pressure from population growth, economic activities, and changing climate means and extremes in many parts of the world. Adaptive management of river catchments and reservoirs requires an in-depth understanding of the impacts of future uncertainties and thus the development of robust, sustainable solutions to meet the needs of various stakeholders and the environment. To tackle the huge challenges in moving towards adaptive catchment management, this book presents the latest developments in cutting-edge knowledge, novel methodologies, innovative management strategies, and case studies, focusing on the following themes: reservoir dynamics and impact analysis of dam construction, optimal reservoir operation, climate change impacts on hydrological processes and water management, and integrated catchment management.
