Book excerpt: This report investigated the relationship of mean-length-at-age vs depth for Pacific ocean perch (Sebastes alutus), based on on-bottom trawl catches on important trawling grounds in British Columbia waters. Catch samples from both the R/V G.B. Reed (1966-84) and several commercial trawlers (1978-97) were utilized. Important grounds, for which adequate data were available, were off the northwest coast of the grounds, for which adequate data were available, were off the northwest coast of the Queen Charlotte Islands (MSAs 1W and 2AW), Moresby Gully (south Hecate Strait and north Queen Charlotte Sound), and Goose Island Gully (Queen Charlotte Sound). Emphasis was laced on 1980-99, when all grounds were exploited, and the refined age-determination method (break and burn) was used. Investigation of seasonal variations in the relationship was not possible, because of inadequate data for October-March. Relationship of mean-length-at-age vs depth exhibited three patterns: (1) a generally horizontal trend, only one prominent nadir (MSA 1W); (2) a generally downward trend, with several prominent nadirs (MSA 2AW); and (3) fairly strong nadirs in the arrays, where the bathymetric range was extensive (Moresby and Goose Island gullies). Three of the patterns suggest that linear-growth analysis of Pacific ocean perch must include depth as a variable. Of particular interest is the evidence for the existence of two bathymetrically separate "groups" of Pacific ocean perch with similar mean length-at-age arrays, in Moresby and Goose Island gullies. Included is a review of other studies dealing with intra-species variations of Pacific ocean perch off British Columbia and nearby waters.

J. Westrheim and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On-bottom trawl surveys have been conducted since 1967 for stock assessment of Pacific ocean perch (Sebastes alutus) in Goose Island Gully (Queen Charlotte Sound, British Columbia). Prior to 1995, all surveys involved a single vessel, and employed the stratified systematic method, along six pre-determined LORAN lines. In 1995, the stratified random method was introduced, using two vessels, and involving a more extensive coverage of the Gully. The purpose of this report was to compare sampling intensity (hauls/100 sq nm), catch rates (kg/h), and mean catches (kg) for the two methods, within the Study Area, defined by the trawl locations in the 1976 survey. Additional comparisons dealt with north-south orientation of hauls (1976 & 1995) and order of trawling (1995). In 1976, sampling intensity (stratified systematic) was 3.6 hauls/100 sq nm. In 1995, sampling intensity was 2.6 hauls/100 sq nm by each vessel along the six GBR LORAN lines, and 4.4 hauls/100 sq nm for all trawl hauls (ALL) in the Study Area. For each vessel, catch-rate differences were minor at 110 (4 - 19%), 130 (6 - 8%), and 150 (0%) fms, but substantial at 90 fms (63 - 86%). However, at 90 fms, catch rates were mostly small. Neither method adequately covered the 90-fm interval, based on single-vessel catches. Although catch rates differed substantially between the paired vessels (37 - 87%), mean catches rarely differed significantly. Orientation of hauls favoured the north side of the Gully for the stratified systematic method, and the south side for the stratified random method. The report concluded that the two survey methods were equivalent, in this case, and that the 1995 survey could have achieved the same results with a single vessel, and fewer hauls. On-bottom trawl surveys, of any kind, for Pacific ocean perch may no longer be relevant, because off-bottom concentrations of Pacific ocean perch have recently been demonstrated in Goose Island Gully, and elsewhere off British Columbia

This book was released on 1999 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Management of Pacific ocean perch (POP) in the Gulf of Alaska (GOA) requires estimates of population paremeters such as the age of 50% maturity (A50) and an index of abundance. The A50 for female POP in the eastern GOA was estimated to be 10.5 years, three years older than the previous estimate of 7.5 years. A shift in the A50 will affect the projected female spawning biomass, an integral component of determining harvest rates. The design of the survey used to determine an index of abundance for POP was evaluated. Survey and commercial fishery catches were mapped and then analyzed using log-linear models. POP exhibit distribution patterns related to habitat which differ among management regions. Efficiencey of the survey design is low for POP and may be improved with less stratification and increased effort in areas of high POP abundance"--Leaf iii.
