Книга предназначена для специалистов в области малакологии, биогеографии, гидробиологии, а также для преподавателей и студентов высших учебных заведений.The monograph summarizes information on taxonomy, nomenclature, distribution and some aspects of bionomics of molluscs of the former USSR fresh and brackish waters. This ‘Analytical catalogue’ is a deeply improved and updated version of two previously published catalogue works (Yu.I. Kantor, A.V. Sysoev “Catalogue of molluscs of Russia and adjacent countries”, 2002, in Russian; and Yu.I. Kantor, M.V. Vinarski, A.A. Shileyko, A.V. Sysoev “Catalogue of the continental mollusks of Russia and adjacent territories”, 2010). In total, the data on 424 nominal species of Bivalvia and 728 nominal species of Gastropoda are included into this book. The actual species richness of aquatic continental molluscs of the former USSR perhaps is significantly lower since validity of many of these nominal species may be questioned and a portion of them is destined to be synonymized in future. During preparation of the book the authors tried to take into account different views on systematization of the ex- USSR aquatic molluscs and to find some correspondence between the ‘Russian’ system (founded in 1960–1970s by Ya.I. Starobogatov) and the approach followed by malacologists working outside Russia. Current approaches to the ‘species problem’ in malacology are briefly discussed. Also, the catalogue includes information about distribution of all molluscan species among large regions of the former USSR area, some data about invasions of alien species and the conservation status of indigenous taxa in accordance with IUCN Red List criteria. The quantitative estimates of faunistic similarity between aquatic malacofaunas of the ex-USSR large regions and the results of the cluster analysis carried out on the basis of these estimates are also provided. The book is addressed to malacologists, biogeographers, hydrobiologists as well as to university lecturers and students.

Over the past several decades the Aral Sea, Dead Sea, Lake Balkhash and other major lakes in Asia have undergone significant changes with regard to their size, water level, chemical composition, and flora and fauna. Most of these changes resulted from the loss of water from tributaries (now used for irrigation farming) or increasing consumption in local industries and households. However, significant human impacts may have begun as early as 2000 years ago. In addition to the three lakes mentioned above, Lake Sevan (Armenia), the Caspian Sea (Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkmenistan), Lake Issyk-Kul (Kyrgyzstan), and Lake Lop Nur (China) are discussed as the most prominent examples of changing lake ecosystems. In contrast, an example of an almost pristine lake ecosystem is included with the report on Lake Uvs Nuur (Mongolia). For each lake, the book summarizes its origin and early geological history, and reconstructs its natural state and variability on the basis of proxy records from drilled or exposed lake sediments that have accumulated since the last ice age. The frequently observed reductions in lake level and size during most recent decades led often to significant environmental impacts in the respective lake catchments including vegetation deterioration, soil erosion and badland formation, soil salinization or the formation of sinkholes.

Since the Jurassic, the four families of sturgeon-like fish have been restricted to the Holarctic, where until very recently they flourished in most major river systems. Today, however, virtually all species of sturgeons and paddlefishes face difficult conservation issues. Papers in the first section of this volume examine paleontology, systematics, evolution and basic biology of Acipenseriformes. The second section of this volume details current conservation status for most of the world's living species of Acipenseriformes. These papers mark the first attempt to make such a global review of recent data from across the northern hemisphere. The emerging picture is discouraging, for negative anthropogenic impacts range from overfishing to water pollution, to dams and water diversion projects, and all species are threatened to some degree. The third section of the volume considers specific human impacts and responses to conservation issues. These include: the Aral Sea ecological disaster and its impact on native sturgeons; a review of methods for restoring sturgeon populations; the use of molecular techniques in developing conservation strategies; the extreme sensitivity of sturgeons and paddlefishes to overfishing; and the history of a recently convicted caviar poaching ring. Book excerpt: Ancient lakes are exceptional freshwater environments that have continued to exist for hundreds of thousands of years. They have long been recognized as centres of biodiversity and hotspots of evolution. During recent decades, speciation in ancient lakes has emerged as an important and exciting topic in evolutionary biology. The contributions in this volume deal with patterns and processes of biological diversification in three prominent ancient lake systems. Of these, the famous East African Great Lakes already have a strong tradition of evolutionary studies, but the two other systems have so far received much less attention. The exceptional biodiversity of the European sister lakes Ohrid and Prespa of the Balkans has long been known, but has largely been neglected in the international literature until recently. The rich biota and problems of its evolution in the two central lake systems on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, in turn, have only lately started to draw scientific attention. This volume aims at deepening the awareness of the unusual biological diversity in ancient lakes in general, and of the role of these lakes as natural laboratories for the study of speciation and diversification in particular. It should stimulate further research that will lead to a better understanding of key evolutionary processes in these lakes, and to knowledge that might help in mitigating the deterioration of their diversity in the future.
