The species related with man, domestic animals and excrements are covered most completely, because of their epidemiologic and epizootologic importance and necessity of their control. The faunistic investigations of these groups out of the populated areas are carried out mostly in the open air of the main mountains in Bulgaria. In this catalogue are included all published data about 239 species from 38 genera, however, there could be expected at least one third more species of these three groups to be added to the Bulgarian list."

The present volume also combines a number of regular papers with the proceedings of a symposium. In 2010, the European Symposium on the Biology of the Chrysomelidae was held within the frame of the IXth European Congress of Entomology (ECE) at Budapest, Hungary, on August 23. Hungary ? as the host country of the congress - has a long tradition of entomological research and always had a marked bridging role in the social life of entomologists of Europe. The ECE has been co-organized by the Hungarian Entomological Society which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2010. The Hungarian Entomological Society is one of the oldest scientific societies in Hungary with continuous activity, including the 1950s, when most Hungarian societies were dissolved by the communist government. This congress offered an important opportunity for entomologist to exchange ideas, results, and social matters. On top of all, the city of Budapest provided a beautiful background to this memorable scientific and social event. We, the organisers of the Symposium on Chrysomelidae, are proud and happy to see our conference represented by five papers based on contributions to it in vol. 157 of ZooKeys (Research on Chrysomelidae vol. 3). Four more papers on leaf beetles complete this volume. We thank authors and publishers for helping to make research on leaf beetles more visible and easier to access.

Nevertheless there is still a great lack of knowledge in some groups, such as the Geometridae. The northern and central European fauna is relatively well known, but the distribution and bionomics of a number of species are poorly known. This problem is much more marked in southern Europe where no books on Geometridae have been published for nearly a century. Data on the bionomics are frequently unavailable which makes it difficult to assess environmental threats to the geometrid species. Information on distribution is still grossly incomplete and many records have been based on misidentifications. These problems are mainly caused by the lack of comprehensive identification literature. The geographical area covered in this series ranges from North Cape to Gibraltar and Malta, and from the Atlantic Ocean to the Ural Mountains. Each volume will illustrate the adults of all species, and if possible also subspecies, in photographic colour plates of the highest quality. Sexual dimorphism as well as polymorphism will be illustrated. Most species will be shown at natural size, but some larger groups of small species such as the genera Idaea and Eupithecia will be shown enlarged.
