Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food is the basic need of human beings. The increasing population and enhanced standard of living are placing greater demands on food-related requirements in terms of quantity, quality and diversity. The Green Revolution which significantly enhanced productivity of important food crops, nevertheless, resulted in certain fallouts as genetic erosion, soil degradation, chemical pollution and aquifer depletion. Amongst these, decrease in plant genetic diversity is an irreversible loss. As the basic raw material for future plant breeding, plant genetic resources of foodgrains are the key to future food security. Though, plant breeding has attracted the attention of many authors, plant genetic resources remain somewhat neglected. This book gives an overall perspective current status of genetic resource of important foodgrain crops (wheat, rice, maize, barley, sorghum, millets, pulses and legumes and underutilized crops). It provides a comprehensive compilation on current status of information on origin, taxonomy, diversity, collection, exchange, evaluation, utilization, molecular characterization and conservation for food grain crops. Eminent scientists and crop specialists have critically analyzed the information in view of the present and future research priorities. In addition, management issue related to plant genetic resources are also discussed. At present such information on these crops is lacking and this book fills in the void. It shall serve as reference for genetic resource managers, researchers, teachers, students and policy makers in biology and agriculture.

Book Cowpea in India

Download or read book Cowpea in India written by D. Kumar and published by Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2004-07-01 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cowpea an important food legume, is adapted to wide ranges of soil and rainfall situations, hence, cultivated in tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. It is the crop of low and high rainfall regions, grown particularly as a mixed/inter crop for various-purposes. Cowpea is an ancient source of food, forage, fodder, vegetable, certain snacks, cover crop and an important component of cropping system. The crop has been investigated for its varied aspects to make it more productive, useful, sustenance, source of organic food and the crop of common masses. The information so generated is scattered, unsystematic and not readily available at a place. It is desired that research results of various aspects generated in India are collected, compiled and systematically arranged so as to draw viable and valuable conclusion by the intended users and planners. In view of this, present compilation "Cowpea in India" represents a treasure of scientific information by reputed researchers throughout the country. The compilation comprises fourteen chapters devoted to plant improvement, crop husbandry, resistance towards abiotic stresses, genetic resources of quantitative and qualitative nature, plant protection, soil nematodes, forage aspects, uses, vegetable purposes etc. The book it is hoped would be of great use and help to those concerned with all over cowpea advancement and development in one way or other.

Book Rediscovering Local Landraces Shaping Horticulture for the Future

Download or read book Rediscovering Local Landraces Shaping Horticulture for the Future written by Spyridon A. Petropoulos and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-05-09 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Local landraces are traditional crop varieties cultivated in specific locations. However, the intensification of modern horticulture has put these genotypes aside, since farmers tend to select hybrids or commercial cultivars due to higher yield, uniformity and marketability. The various landraces are very distinct in their quality features, therefore it is of high importance to highlight these differences and identify genotypes that could be further exploited by producing high added value products and by reinforcing local rural economies. The proposed Research Topic aims to reveal the importance of local landraces for sustainable horticulture, focusing on their special quality features as the result of adaptation to specific growing conditions after domestication.

Book Brassica Improvement

Download or read book Brassica Improvement written by Shabir Hussain Wani and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-13 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global population is mounting at an alarming stride to surpass 9.3 billion by 2050, whereas simultaneously the agricultural productivity is gravely affected by climate changes resulting in increased biotic and abiotic stresses. The genus Brassica belongs to the mustard family whose members are known as cruciferous vegetables, cabbages or mustard plants. Rapeseed-mustard is world’s third most important source of edible oil after soybean and oil palm. It has worldwide acceptance owing to its rare combination of health promoting factors. It has very low levels of saturated fatty acids which make it the healthiest edible oil that is commonly available. Apart from this, it is rich in antioxidants by virtue of tocopherols and phytosterols presence in the oil. The high omega 3 content reduces the risk of atherosclerosis/heart attack. Conventional breeding methods have met with limited success in Brassica because yield and stress resilience are polygenic traits and are greatly influenced by environment. Therefore, it is imperative to accelerate the efforts to unravel the biochemical, physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying yield, quality and tolerance towards biotic and abiotic stresses in Brassica. To exploit its fullest potential, systematic efforts are needed to unlock the genetic information for new germplasms that tolerate initial and terminal state heat coupled with moisture stress. For instance, wild relatives may be exploited in developing introgressed and resynthesized lines with desirable attributes. Exploitation of heterosis is another important area which can be achieved by introducing transgenics to raise stable CMS lines. Doubled haploid breeding and marker assisted selection should be employed along with conventional breeding. Breeding programmes aim at enhancing resource use efficiency, especially nutrient and water as well as adoption to aberrant environmental changes should also be considered. Biotechnological interventions are essential for altering the biosynthetic pathways for developing high oleic and low linolenic lines. Accordingly, tools such as microspore and ovule culture, embryo rescue, isolation of trait specific genes especially for aphid, Sclerotinia and alternaria blight resistance, etc. along with identification of potential lines based on genetic diversity can assist ongoing breeding programmes. In this book, we highlight the recent molecular, genetic and genomic interventions made to achieve crop improvement in terms of yield increase, quality and stress tolerance in Brassica, with a special emphasis in Rapeseed-mustard.
