Book List of the Coleoptera of Southern California

Download or read book List of the Coleoptera of Southern California written by Henry Clinton Fall and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from List of the Coleoptera of Southern California: With Notes on Habits and Distribution and Descriptions of New Species Previous to the time of Le Conte our knowledge of the Coleoptera of the Pacific Coast was due entirely to the writings of Eschscholtz (1829) and Mannerheim (1843 - 1853). Both of these authors confined their attention to the fauna of the northern coast region - more especially of Alaska - and, as is remarked by Le Conte, at the close of Mannerheim's labors, the fauna of that region was more completely developed than that of any other part of the continent. In 1859 Le Conte published a list of 147 species collected by Xantus at Fort Tejon. The number is insignificant, but the list is interesting in the present connection, since Fort Tejon lies at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley, on the northern slope of the mountains which separate the valley from Southern California. Of the 147 species named, 120 are now known to occur south of the mountains. From 1859 to 1876 several papers of a faunal nature were contributed by Le Conte, Horn, and Ulke, none of which, however, are so important as to require special mention. In these, as in the two first named, the references to Californian species are for the most part contained in lists covering a much wider territory. Since 1876 only a few local lists have appeared, the most important being that contained in the report of the Death Valley Expedition; the Tenebrionidse, Cicindelidse, Histeridse, and Coccinellidse observed in San Diego County by Dr. F. E. Blaisdell and two lists presented by the author, one of a collection made in the San Bernardino Mts., and the other of the Coleoptera known from the Southern California islands. The result is a work that is nothing short of magnificent.” —Wired When renowned British geneticist J. B. S. Haldane was asked what could be inferred about God from a study of his works, Haldane replied, “An inordinate fondness for beetles.” With 350,000 known species, and scientific estimates that millions more have yet to be identified, their abundance is indisputable as is their variety. They range from the delightful summer firefly to the one-hundred-gram Goliath beetle. Beetles offer a dazzling array of shapes, sizes, and colors that entice scientists and collectors across the globe. The Book of Beetles celebrates the beauty and diversity of this marvelous insect. Six hundred significant beetle species are covered, with each entry featuring a distribution map, basic biology, conservation status, and information on cultural and economic significance. Full-color photos show the beetles both at their actual size and enlarged to show details, such as the sextet of spots that distinguish the six-spotted tiger beetle or the jagged ridges of the giant-jawed sawyer beetle. Based in the most up-to-date science and accessibly written, the descriptive text will appeal to researchers and armchair coleopterists alike. The humble beetle continues to grow in popularity, taking center stage in biodiversity studies, sustainable agriculture programs, and even the dining rooms of adventurous and eco-conscious chefs. The Book of Beetles is certain to become the authoritative reference on these remarkably adaptable and beautiful creatures. “Photographs of more than 600 colorful, glossy species, resembling bejeweled broaches morethan creepy crawlies, are presented at actual size.” —Publishers Weekly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first monograph of Coccinellidae. Although the group finds inclusion both in Clausen's (1940) "Entomophagous Insects" and in Balduf's (1935) "Entomophagous Coleoptera", reference in these works is limited to three and twenty pages respectively. Moreover, the last thirty years since these books appeared have ~een a great deal of work on the group. The use of insecticides largely destroyed the early attempts at biological control and interest remained low for as long as insecticides appeared quite successfuL However, the problems of insecticides soon became apparent, and in the last decade there have been tremendous developments in biological control, particularly in eombin

Book Ecology and Behaviour of the Ladybird Beetles Coccinellidae

Download or read book Ecology and Behaviour of the Ladybird Beetles Coccinellidae written by Ivo Hodek and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-04-19 with total page 605 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ladybirds are probably the best known predators of aphids and coccids in the world, though this greatly underestimates the diversity of their biology. Maximising their impact on their prey is an important element in modern conservation biological control of indigenous natural enemies in contrast to the classical approach of releasing alien species. Ivo Hodek is one of the most internationally respected experts on coccinellids who has researched these insects for his entire career. He has now brought together 14 scientists of international standing to author 12 chapters, making this book the definitive treatment of coccinellid biology and ecology. This volume covers the rapid scientific developments of recent years in the understanding of coccinellid phylogeny, the semiochemicals influencing their behaviour and of molecular genetics. Recent insights in relation to intraguild predation and the assessment of the predatory impact of coccinellids are also covered. Other special features of the volume are the extensive references covering the literature from both East and West and a taxonomic glossary of the up-to-date nomenclature for species of coccinellids as well as of other organisms mentioned in the text. While aimed at researchers, university teachers and agricultural entomologists, the book is readable and appropriate for others who just have a liking for these interesting and attractive insects.

Book Saproxylic Insects

  • Author : Michael D. Ulyshen
  • Publisher : Springer

  • ISBN : 331975937X
  • Pages : 896 pages

Download or read book Saproxylic Insects written by Michael D. Ulyshen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-21 with total page 896 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers extensive information on insect life in dying and dead wood. Written and reviewed by leading experts from around the world, the twenty-five chapters included here provide the most global coverage possible and specifically address less-studied taxa and topics. An overarching goal of this work is to unite literature that has become fragmented along taxonomic and geographic lines. A particular effort was made to recognize the dominant roles that social insects (e.g., termites, ants and passalid beetles) play in saproxylic assemblages in many parts of the world without overlooking the non-social members of these communities. The book is divided into four parts: · Part I “Diversity” includes chapters addressing the major orders of saproxylic insects (Coleoptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera, Hemiptera, Lepidoptera and Blattodea), broadly organized in decreasing order of estimated global saproxylic diversity. In addition to order-level treatments, some chapters in this part discuss groups of particular interest, including pollinators, hymenopteran parasitoids, ants, stag and passalid beetles, and wood-feeding termites. · Part II “Ecology” discusses insect-fungal and insect-insect interactions, nutritional ecology, dispersal, seasonality, and vertical stratification. · Part III “Conservation” focuses on the importance of primary forests for saproxylic insects, offers recommendations for conserving these organisms in managed forests, discusses the relationships between saproxylic insects and fire, and addresses the value of tree hollows and highly-decomposed wood for saproxylic insects. Utilization of non-native wood by saproxylic insects and the suitability of urban environments for these organisms are also covered. · Lastly, Part IV “Methodological Advancements” highlights molecular tools for assessing saproxylic diversity. The book offers an accessible and insightful resource for natural historians of all kinds and will especially appeal to entomologists, ecologists, conservationists and foresters.

Book At the Size Limit Effects of Miniaturization in Insects

Download or read book At the Size Limit Effects of Miniaturization in Insects written by Alexey A. Polilov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-20 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses microinsects, their structure and their differences from larger relatives. Moreover, it discusses structural changes that accompany extreme diminution in living organisms, evolutionary inventions that help insects to live in the microworld, and factors that limit the size of animals. It also takes a careful look at the potential benefits of the study of microinsects for solving biotechnological and fundamental scientific problems. Miniaturization is not only a trend in technology: it is also one of the trends in the evolution of life. Many of the problems modern engineers are still struggling with were solved by nature millions of years ago. The world of microscopic organisms, invisible to the naked eye, is all around us. Microinsects — the extremely diverse range of miniature insects less than a millimeter long — are one of the most intriguing components of this microworld. Having evolved to the size of unicellular organisms, the smallest insects managed not only to preserve their structural complexity, but also to evolve some novel features not found in larger insects.
