Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Raven's biography of the seventeenth-century English naturalist John Ray is one of the great works in the history of science. The author's command of Latin (the language in which all Ray's biological works were written) and his enthusiasm for natural history enabled him to interpret superbly to the modern reader John Ray's remarkable scientific work and to rescue Ray's reputation from undeserved neglect. Raven reveals the unique influence Ray had on the development of modern science and in particular explains sympathetically the key role of Ray's last, most popular and most influential work, The Wisdom of God, which was the forerunner of the great 'Darwinian' controversies between science and religion in the nineteenth century.

Book Thomas Hollis of Lincoln s Inn

Download or read book Thomas Hollis of Lincoln s Inn written by W. H. Bond and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Hollis, a connoisseur and collector of art and antiquities, devoted the greater part of his substance and his energy to promoting the ideals of civil and religious liberty. Hollis is best known to modern bibliophiles for the distinctive bindings that he commissioned for the many books he distributed in Britain, the American colonies, and all over Europe. This book contains the first comprehensive catalogue and interpretation of his emblematic binding tools and a discussion of the several binders who worked for him. It also explores other activities that are less well known: his patronage of writers, printers, publishers, and artists, and his work as a designer of books and medals. This study should encourage a re-evaluation of Hollis's influence in the Age of Enlightenment and the Age of Revolution.

Book The Yeats Sisters

Download or read book The Yeats Sisters written by Joan Hardwick and published by Pandora Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his autobiography and letters the Irish poet W.B. Yeats gives the impression that he had one rather shadowy sister on the fringes of his life. In reality the poet was for long periods largely dependent on his two sisters, Susan (Lily) and Elizabeth (Lolly). The family home in which he lived was for many years sustained only by the earnings of Lily, who worked as an embroiderer for May Morris, and Lolly, who taught in a kindergarten and gave lessons in painting.

Book The Yeats Sisters and the Cuala

Download or read book The Yeats Sisters and the Cuala written by Gifford Lewis and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Yeats sisters have long been overshadowed by their famous brothers - Jack and William. Nevertheless they themselves made a significant contribution to the cultural life of Ireland through their involvement with the Cuala industries. The 'Cuala', as it was popularly known, was an Irish female craft co-operative on the English Arts and Crafts model, founded and managed by the sisters. Elizabeth ran the printing department with William as editor to the Press, while Lily, who was trained in the Morris workshops, ran the embroidery department. Contrary to appearances, the Yeats sisters were not typical middle-class philanthropists but poor spinsters, thrown onto their own resources, who supported themselves and their family. They funded their self-absorbed and improvident father until his death in New York in 1922. The Yeats children carried through their lives resentments from their painful childhood; the two sisters were incompatible; W.B.'s opinion of his sisters was rather blinkered and patronising. The lives of Elizabeth and Lily deserve separate notice freed from his great shadow and from his disparagement.

The book explains the history of "trusted systems" that permit publishers to control how the public relates to their materials and assesses the likelihood that such systems can come into common use. Legal and policy choices that are designed to encourage the development of such systems are discussed, along with the implications for the future of both information technology and intellectual property law.
