Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the world's leading authorities on ancient bronze sculpture, Carol C. Mattusch urges us to discard the terms "Greek original" and "Roman copy" and to adopt instead terms that distinguish unique works from those produced in series and those produced as variations on a theme. She discusses the dating of bronzes based on criteria of technique and style, and considers technical innovations in the art of portraiture. Most controversially, she offers evidence that Greek artists cast bronzes in series based on a single model. Mattusch points out that examples of series castings can be found among the statuettes and vessel attachments from the Geometric and Orientalizing periods. From the Classical period onward, statues also appear to have been cast in series. Certain styles and types of images that achieved widespread popularity during the Hellenistic and Roman periods were produced in large quantities and in several different places. This book will raise important new questions in the field of Classical bronze sculpture. How long might a single model remain in use and how far might casts from it be transported for production? What is the significance of an artist's signature on a work in a series and what influence was wielded by the potential buyer? And, given these issues, what should the criteria be for distinguishing Greek works from Roman ones? Classical Bronzes is generously illustrated, including an eight-page color insert.

Book The First Smithsonian Collection

Download or read book The First Smithsonian Collection written by Helena E. Wright and published by Smithsonian Institution. This book was released on 2015-04-28 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outstanding Academic Title, Choice, 2015 Winner, Ewell Newman Award of the American Historical Print Collectors Society, 2016 In 1849 the Smithsonian purchased the Marsh Collection of European engravings. Not only the first collection of any kind to be acquired by the new Institution, it was also the first public print collection in the nation, and it presented an important symbol of cultural authority. The prints formed part of the library of Vermont Congressman George Perkins Marsh (1801-1882), a member of the Smithsonian’s Board of Regents. The uncertainty of the Smithsonian's mission in the early years complicated its motivation for purchasing the collection, especially given Marsh’s position as a Regent in financial difficulty. After a serious fire in 1865, portions of the collection were deposited at the Library of Congress and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Efforts to reclaim it began in the 1880s, as a new generation of Smithsonian staff expanded the National Museum, but they achieved only mixed success. Through the story of the Marsh Collection, the book explores the cultural values attributed to prints in the 19th century, including their prominent role in expositions and their influence on visual culture at a time when collecting styles were moving from an individual’s private contemplation of artworks to wider public venues of exposition in museums and reception by multiple audiences. The history of this first Smithsonian collection enlivens an important stage in the development of American cultural identity and in the formation of the Smithsonian as a national institution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of Casts: Parts I, II and III, Ancient Sculpture The Museum of Fine Arts was incorporated by an act of the Massachusetts Legislature in February, 1870. Its cradle was the Boston Athenaeum, the trustees of which generously gave it a portion of their valuable space during the first six years of its existence. On July 3, 1876, the first section of the present building was opened, and the life of the Museum as an independent institution begun. Its collection of casts at that time consisted of twenty-five loaned by the Athenaeum, a larger number purchased with the proceeds of a sale of pictures bequeathed by Charles Sumner, and a few gifts. The first catalogue contained 117 numbers from Greek and Roman subjects, and the amount of floor-space devoted to casts of all epochs was 3,448 square feet, divided among four rooms. Three years later the liberality of the friends of the Museum enabled the Trustees to complete a second instalment of the building, thus finishing the façade on Copley Square. By this enlargement the classical department was nearly doubled, the floor-space given to casts and originals in that department amounting to about 6,500 square feet. The collection of casts was increased in proportion, and additions were subsequently made to it from time to time until the rooms became too crowded to admit more objects.
