Book Catalogue of the Library of the Royal Dublin Society Classic Reprint

Download or read book Catalogue of the Library of the Royal Dublin Society Classic Reprint written by Royal Dublin Society. Library and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-13 with total page 848 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Library of the Royal Dublin Society In addition, the Catalogues of the Society now, without swelling the bulk of them, afford at a glance some useful ih formation, which has not been systematically provided in any other published catalogue, and which cannot be fully obtained (even should it exist there) from other Catalogues, without running over every title from first to last. As this accurate system was not established so early as 1849, the Librarian proceeded to collate all his earlier titles with the title-pages themselves. This was not always easy, and sometimes impossible, the books required for collation being, in many instances, borrowed out by members, so that, if the Librarian did not succeed in finding the book in the Libraries of Trinity College, the King's Inns, or Charlemont House, he was, after long delay, obliged to sign the proofs, and hurry them through press, without final revision. Under these circumstances, he was surprised, when he over-ran the work while making the Index, at finding so few errors or omissions'; but these (although not more numerous or impor tant than those which may be traced in any catalogue of the same extent) make a formidable appearance when collected. The Librarian has, therefore, been urged to suppress his Ad denda et Corrigenda generally, as casting undeserved discredit on the printers (whose work was very carefully executed). He is told that, unless he notices the error, nobody else will. But, as the Supplement will form part of the material of a future Catalogue, the Librarian prefers putting the correction of all traced errors on record at once. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1899, Arthur Wesley Dow's Composition has probably influenced more Americans than any other text to think of visual form and composition in relation to artistic modernity. While Dow is known as the mentor of Georgia O'Keeffe and Max Weber, his legacy as a proponent of modern art has suffered undeserved neglect by recent artists and art historians. In Composition Dow develops a system for teaching students to create freely constructed images on the basis of harmonic relations between lines, colors, and dark and light patterns. Greatly influenced by Japanese art, he expounds a theory of "flat" formal equilibrium as an essential component of telling pictorial creation. Generations of teachers and their public school pupils learned from Dow's orientalism and adopted basic postimpressionist principles without even knowing the term. The reappearance of Dow's practical, well-illustrated guide, enhanced by Joseph Masheck's discussion of its historical ramifications, is an important event for all concerned with the visual arts and the intellectual antecedents of American modernism.

This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Irish Manuscripts in the Library of Trinity College, Dublin The history of our Library from the foundation of the College has been sketched in outline by Dr. I. K. Ingram, in his Address to the Congress of Librarians, and by Dr. T. K. Abbott, in the Book of Trinity College, and again in the preface to his General Catalogue of our Mss. Both have given some interesting parti culars as to the history of our collection of manuscripts, but we have as yet no detailed study of its origin and growth. It may be worth while to put together here in a few pages what can be learned as to the provenance of our Irish mss., with which alone this volume is concerned. I shall confine myself to inquiring when and how they came into our Library; what is known as to the earlier history ofeach manuscript will be found in the description of each under its number, or in the literature there quoted. Until quite recently no continuous official record was kept of acquisitions by gift or purchase. We possess indeed several volumes oflibrary Minutes, extending from 1786 onward, the earlier part of which, down to 1821, we owe mainly to the eccentric but industrious Dr. John Barrett, who was Librarian during most of that period. I have searched these Minutes carefully and gleaned some stray details, but they are mainly occupied with Library routine.' Our main source of information is the series of Catalogues of mss. Which are now to be described, supplemented by what we can learn from the manuscripts themselves. Ti23 Catalogues. - Those that concern us (setting aside some which only deal with printed books) are.
