The remaining coins are without magistrates' names, but they are dated and were all issued in the same year, TTC = 306 from the Lydo-Phrygian or Sullan Era 85--84 B.c., corresponding with 222 A.D., the year in which Severus Alexander became emperor. They are for the most part quasi-autonomous, with heads of Synkletos, Boule, &c. In this same year dated coins were also struck at the neighbouring Dionysopolis withTO=C0 from an era starting from 152---3 A.d.; cf. the coins of Laodiceia with the dates and PH=88 and 108 from an era starting from 123--4 A.d. It is probable therefore that Games were held at Laodiceia in 211--12, at Dionysopolis and by the Hyrgaleis in 221--2, and again at Laodiceia in 231--2, and that special issues of money were required for the same decennial festival, at one city or another, every ten years. The chief types of the Hyrgalean coins are the Rider-god with double-axe and hound (Z. f. N., xvii., 22); Zeus Laodikeus; Apollo and Artemis face to face (PI. xxxiii. 3); Demeter standing (PI. xxxiii. 4), and Kybele enthroned (PI. xxxiii. 5); River-god MAI AN (Iinhoof, Kl. Book Catalogue of the Greek Coins of Phrygia Classic Reprint

Download or read book Catalogue of the Greek Coins of Phrygia Classic Reprint written by Barclay V. Head and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Greek Coins of Phrygia This volume of the Catalogue of Greek coins (the twenty-fifth of the series begun in 1873) deals with the coins of the eastern portion of the Roman Province of Asia, anciently known as Phrygia, and completes the Catalogue of all the coins of Asia Minor at present in the British Museum. In 1873, when the first volume of the Catalogue of Greek Coins was published, the collection of Phrygian Coins in the Museum was a small one, consisting only of about 700 specimens, as against 1636 described by Mionnet. The late M. W. H. Waddington, specially interested as he was in the coinage of Asia Minor, often impressed upon me the advisability of adding largely to the Phrygian series before undertaking to catalogue it. To bring it up to the required level has since been an object I have kept in view in selecting coins for purchase, and, as will be seen from the following pages, I am now at last able to catalogue no less than 2148 coins. The various sources from which all, or nearly all, the specimens have passed into the British Museum are noted in square brackets. Book Nemesis the Roman State and the Games

Download or read book Nemesis the Roman State and the Games written by Michael B. Hornum and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-08-25 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Nemesis was already revered in Archaic Greece, the main evidence for worship comes from the Roman Principate. During this period two important facets of the cult were the association of the goddess with the state, and her presence in agonistic contexts. Nemesis, the Roman State and the Games explores these aspects, discerning a possible connection between them. The author begins by discussing the origin and background of the goddess. He then clarifies the ways in which the goddess was enlisted into the service of the Roman emperor and state. Finally, he explains the presence of the goddess almost exclusively at the Roman Munus and Venatio as derived from the function of such games to express the proper order of society. Nemesis represents a significant re-evaluation of the place of Nemesis in the Roman World. The book also provides an invaluable corpus of epigraphic, literary, and iconographic evidence for the goddess.
