It shows that, while invariably absent in institutional histories, women were vital to the development of the modern blockbuster exhibition. Rodin: 'The Zola of Sculpture' reveals how the appraisal of Rodin in British culture was shaped by controversies around the literary models of Zola and Baudelaire, in a period when negative notions about French culture were being progressively transformed into positive expressions of modern sculpture. Embedded within this collaborative book is the editor's proposition that Rodin came to play an important role in the cultural politics of the Entente Cordiale at a critical juncture of European history. Encompassing new scholarship in several disciplines, drawn from both sides of the Channel, Rodin: 'The Zola of Sculpture' offers the first in-depth account of Rodin's career in Britain in the period 1880-1914 and weaves this historical trajectory into a complex investigation of the interactions between French and British cultures. The authors examine the cultural agencies in which conceptions of Rodin's practice played a defining role, dealing in turn with artists' professional associations, art criticism, private and public collectors and the education of women sculptors.

Book excerpt: The life and work of a sculptor who pushed both aesthetic and social boundaries at the turn of the twentieth century is explored in this in-depth study. Working in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Louisville-born sculptor Enid Yandell developed a distinctly physical and masculine style that challenged the gender norms of artistic practice. An award-winning sculptor with numerous commissions, she was also an activist for women's suffrage and other political movements. This study examines Yandell's evolution from a young, Southern dilettante into an internationally acclaimed artist and public figure. Yandell found early success as one of a select group of female sculptors at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. She was then commissioned to create a twenty-five foot figure of Pallas Athena for Nashville's Centennial Exposition in 1897. Yandell's command of classical subject matter was matched by her abilities with large-scale, figurative works such as the Daniel Boone statue in Cherokee Park, Louisville. Part of the art worlds of New York and Paris, Yandell associated with luminary sculptors like Frederick MacMonnies and Auguste Rodin. She became one of the first female members of the National Sculpture Society in 1898. This authoritative study explores the many ways in which Yandell was a pioneer.

Reclaiming women for the history of world fairs (1876-1937), it also seeks to introduce new voices into these studies, dialoguing across disciplinary and national historiographies. From the outset, women participated not only as spectators, but also as artists, writers, educators, artisans and workers, without figuring among the organizers of international exhibitions until the 20th century. Their presence became more pointedly acknowledged as feminist movements developed within the Western World and specific spaces dedicated to women’s achievements emerged. International exhibitions emerged as showcases of "modernity" and "progress," but also as windows onto the foreign, the different, the unexpected and the spectacular. As public rituals of celebration, they transposed national ceremonies and protests onto an international stage. For spectators, exhibitions brought the world home; for organizers, the entire world was a fair. Women were actors and writers of the fair narrative, although acknowledgment of their contribution was uneven and often ephemeral. Uncovering such silence highlights how gendered the triumphant history of modernity was, and reveals the ways women as a category engaged with modern life within that quintessential modern space—the world fair.
