Book Catalogue of European Sculpture in the Ashmolean Museum 1540 to the Present Day Italian

Download or read book Catalogue of European Sculpture in the Ashmolean Museum 1540 to the Present Day Italian written by Nicholas Penny and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a superbly illustrated Catalogue of the collection of sculpture in the Ashmolean Museum which is, after that of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the largest and most important in Great Britain. The collection is particularly strong in Italian bronzes and in the work of the New Sculptors (the former from the Fortnum Collection, the latter from the Brocklebank bequest). In addition it possesses the famous ivory Venus and Cupid by Petel, the extraordinary bronze Venus formerly attributed to Hans Mont, the baroque marble bust of Christopher Wren signed by Pierce, a boxwood Saint Sebastian in the style of Bustelli, and the Ugolino by Pierino da Vinci--probably the finest preserved Renaissance relief in wax. The Catalogue, which is divided into three volumes, also includes some ceramics, metalwork, and furniture. It is fully illustrated, including some comparative plates, and contains unusually full discussions of condition and technique.

Book excerpt: Spellbound' explores the concept of 'magical thinking', which describes how people in all ages and cultures have sought to connect with an unseen world of perceived power. This concept of magical thinking is used here to explore the history of medicine and the mind, focusing in particular on magic's secular expressions. Spells, magical objects and rituals are engines of hope, and hope is essential to physical and mental health, indeed to survival. These ideas are explored and conveyed through the extraordinary visual culture of magic, offering an introduction to diverse magical objects, from the exquisite, such as engraved rings and illuminated manuscripts, to the unsettling - a shoe embedded in a wall or a bull's heart pierced with nails. Exhibition: Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, UK (31.08.2018 -- 06.01.2019)

Book Plaster Casts

  • Author : Rune Frederiksen
  • Publisher : Walter de Gruyter
  • Release : 2010-09-27
  • ISBN : 3110216876

Download or read book Plaster Casts written by Rune Frederiksen and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2010-09-27 with total page 765 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume originates from an international conference (Oxford University, 2007). Texts address plaster casts and related themes from antiquity to the present day, and from Egypt to America, Mexico and New Zealand. They are of interest to classical archaeologists, art historians, the history of collecting, curators, conservators, collectors and artists. Articles explore the functions, status and reception of plaster casts in artists’ workshops and in private and public collections, as well as hands-on issues, such as the making, trading, display and conservation of plaster casts. Case-studies on artists’ use of material and technique include ancient Roman copyists, Renaissance sculptors and painters, Dutch 17th-century workshops, Canova, Boccioni and others. A second theme is the role of plaster casts in the history of collecting from the Renaissance to the present day. Several papers address the dissemination of visual ideas, models and ideals through the medium. Papers on modern and contemporary art illuminate the changing uses and semantic values of plaster casts in this period. Amongst the types of casts discussed are artists’ models and final works as well as casts after antiquities, including sculpture, architecture and gems (dactyliothecae). The volume demonstrates the richness of the field, both in terms of the material itself and modern scholarship concerned with it. Conceived as a handbook for students, academics, curators and collectors, the text will form a standard work on the role of plaster casts in the history of Western sculpture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The desire to know the future, influence life's decisions and repel adversities are deeply human impulses found across time and space. In the Islamic world these could be seen as clashing with Islam's central message -- total surrender to God's will, and its foremost principle -- God's supreme and unmediated authority. Yet history reveals that Muslim societies developed different views towards engaging with the supernatural, ranging from plain acceptance to utter condemnation. Spanning from Morocco to China and the 12th to the 20th century, the books, vessels, garments and jewellery showcased in Power and Protection: Islamic Art and the Supernatural present divinatory and talismanic arts as intellectual resources and founts of artistic inspiration. By reflecting the daily fears and hopes of lower and upper classes alike, they also reveal how the human quest for protection and good luck has often overlapped with the belief in God's all-powerfulness"--Provided by publisher.

Book Raphael

    Book Details:
  • Author : Catherine Whistler
  • Publisher : Ashmolean Museum Oxford
  • Release : 2017
  • ISBN : 9781910807156
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Raphael written by Catherine Whistler and published by Ashmolean Museum Oxford. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The selection of drawings demonstrates how Raphael created a specific mode of visual invention and persuasive communication through drawing. He used drawing both as conceptual art (including brainstorming sheets) and as a practice based on attentive observation (such as drawing from the posed model). Yet Raphael's drawings also reveal how the process of drawing in itself, with its gestural rhythms and spontaneity, can be a form of thought, generating new ideas. The Oxford exhibition will present drawings that span Raphael's entire career, encompassing many of his major projects and exploring his visual language from inventive ideas to full compositions. The extraordinary range of drawings by Raphael in the Ashmolean and the Albertina, enhanced by appropriate loans, will enable this exhibition to cast new light on this familiar artist, transforming our understanding of Raphael's art.
