Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires Preserved in the Department of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum, Vol. 5: 1771-1783 The strictly chronological order has been applied only to political satires. The prints fall into two categories, political and non-political, the latter being classed as personal in accordance with the title of the Catalogue. This group includes social satires and non-political prints in general. As the political prints exclude 'the purely historical print (e.g. Prints after West's Death of Wolfe, so opposed in spirit to Gillray's Death of the Great Wolf, a caricature of West's picture), so the personal and social satires exclude genre except where it is humorous or cautionary, and therefore a satire on manners or morals. Though most of the prints fall clearly into one or other category there are some which may be considered either political or personal; these are impossible to classify with rigorous consistency. But the value of these personal prints for social history depends upon a knowledge of their date; they are therefore arranged in years, though within each year chronological order has been waived in favour of arrange ment by series, by artist, or by subject, overlapping categories which cannot be strictly observed. Taken together, the sequence of political and social prints reflects, as nothing else does, the changing and elusive spirit of the period. At the same time, a traditional symbolism and the recurrence of the same theme from age to age show how strong was the power of tradition, even in this art, so essentially of the moment. The thirteen years covered by this volume saw a change in the manner of pictorial satire and a great development in its political importance. These developments were closely inter-related and can scarcely be dis cussed separately, they were due to the interaction of aesthetic and political causes, and they are the more marked since in 1771 political satire was at a low ebb, while during 1782 - 3 it was at the highest point yet reached. D'Eon's significance as a historical figure was already being debated more than 45 years before his death. Not surprisingly, such sensational material has attracted the attention of enthusiasts, scholars and literateurs to 'the strange case of the chevalier d'Eon'. He has also attracted the attention of psychologists and sexologists, and for most of the last century his gender transformation has been viewed through a Freudian lens. His cross-dressing, it was usually assumed, must have a psychosexual explanation. Until the second half of the twentieth century the terms 'Eonist' and 'Eonism' were the standard English words for transvestites and transvestism respectively, but 'Eonism' was also, thanks to Havelock Ellis, widely regarded as a psychological condition or compulsion. However, in the mid-twentieth century, new ideas about gender-identity disorders led to d'Eon being redefined not as a transvestite, but a transsexual - a person who considers their sex to have been 'misassigned'. The essays in this collection contribute to d'Eon's rehabilitation as a figure worthy of scholarly attention and display a variety of disciplinary approaches. Drawing on new research into d'Eon's life, this volume offers original and nuanced readings of how a gender identity could come to be negotiated over time.

Born in 1725, the son of a prosperous London distiller, he was given the classical education of a gentleman, before entering politics as a Whig. Finding his party in opposition following the accession of George III in 1760 he took up his pen with sensational effect, and made a career out of excoriating the new administration and promoting the Whig interest. His charismatic style and vicious wit soon ensured that he became a figurehead for the radical cause, earning him many admirers and many enemies. Amongst the latter were the king, and the artist William Hogarth who famously depicted Wilkes as a grinning, squint-eyed, pug-nosed agent of misrule. Whilst Wilkes's political career has been much explored, particularly the period between 1763 and 1774, much less has been written about his remarkable private life. This biography provides a more comprehensive examination of Wilkes throughout his long life than has hitherto been available. Taking a thematic, rather than chronological approach it is divided into six main chapters covering family, ambition, sex, religion, class and money, which allows a much more rounded picture of Wilkes to emerge. In so doing it provides a fascinating insight, not only into one of the most intriguing characters of the Georgian period, but also into wider eighteenth-century British society and its shifting attitudes to morality, politics and gender.
