C: For the Year 1897 and 1898 In the month of February, 1898, W. H. Harris and J. S. Hines donated five i acres Of land. To the North Carolina Christian Missionary Convention for a_ school location. An additional five acres were purchased; thus securing ten acres in a body, for campus and building purposes, adjoining the town of Ayden.' Subscriptions were taken for the immediate erection Of a building. Work was begun on a two-story frame structure in May Of the same year and was nearly enough completed to be occupied in September; when the-first term Of the College Opened with 17 pupils in attendance: In the spring Of 1894, the building was completed in time for the first annual commencement. In the same year an additional building for the musical department was erected and an enrollment of 70 pupils, was reached. Four teachers were engaged in the work during the first year. A Church was organized in this year and regular services were held in the College building. At the Convention held at Kinston, October 1894, seven trustees were elected with the provision that two Should retire and be succeeded by two others, annually.
