Book Variance in Arabic Manuscripts

Download or read book Variance in Arabic Manuscripts written by Florian Sobieroj and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-05-24 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Arabic and Islamic studies, the subject of variance in general and that of textual variation in particular has not been investigated exhaustively so far. In the present book the variation in texts of the “closed transmission” will be studied, focusing on a small corpus of didactic and model poems, with a view to establishing what degree of text stability and change was allowed by the medium manuscript. Categories of variance (relating to work-titles, text, number of verses and their sequence, page-layout, context) and the means of controlling them in the manuscripts of the poems are identified and detailed descriptions of the copies are given. The monograph also includes a presentation of some major traits of the cultural background to the study of Arabic didactic poetry and of its dissemination in which memorization has played a crucial role. The intended readers, editors and other users of manuscripts, are helped to acquaint themselves with the methods employed in the manuscripts to control variation and they are given an overview of the large spectrum of Arabic didactic poetry and of its place in the traditional culture of learning in Islamicate societies.

Book Byzantium and the Arabs in the Sixth Century

Download or read book Byzantium and the Arabs in the Sixth Century written by Irfan Shahîd and published by Dumbarton Oaks. This book was released on 1995 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Byzantium and the Arabs in the Sixth Century is devoted to frontier studies and to the structures of the Arab federates of Byzantium. It deals mainly with the Ghassanids of Oriens in the sixth century, a time of transition from Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages. The focus of this study is on the military, religious, and civil structures of the Ghassanids. The detailed study of these buildings contributes to our understanding of Byzantine provincial art and architecture in Oriens, as they were adopted by the federate Arabs and later adapted to their own use. As monuments of Christian architecture, these federate structures constitute the missing link in the development of Arab architecture in the region--the link between the earlier pagan (Nabataean and Palmyrene) and later Muslim (Umayyad).

Book excerpt: The superb early medieval al-Kisa'i whose millenium hidden Kitab 'aja-'ib al-Malakut has been completely uncovered by the editors who have elementarily reconstructed his hitherto unknown biography; having enlightened the real substance of Islamology. That reality is synoptically put his own written opus maius does qualitatively and quantitatively constitute the whole textbook of the earliest Judeo-Muslim authentic erudition following which the current islamology should be updated. Being a polemical compilation its proper edition has required a totally new methodology; within it only a single paradigm is presented here: "interpretive thematical codicology" that combining with the other systems substantializes the comprehensively annotative exclusive edition in its entirety.

Book The Development of Arabic Logic 1200 1800

Download or read book The Development of Arabic Logic 1200 1800 written by Khaled El-Rouayheb and published by Schwabe Verlag (Basel). This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have seen a dramatic change in scholarly views of the later career of Arabic and Islamic philosophy. For much of the twentieth century, researchers tended to dismiss the value of Arabic writings on philosophy and logic after the twelfth century, often on the basis of the prejudice that handbooks, commentaries and glosses are of necessity pedantic and unoriginal. This assumption has now been abandoned. As a consequence, a vast amount of later Arabic writings on philosophy and logic, hitherto neglected, are now being studied and edited. The present work is an attempt at giving an overview of the development of Arabic logic from 1200 to 1800, identifying major themes, figures and works in this period, while taking into account regional differences within the Islamic world. It offers a corrective to Nicholas Rescher's seminal but now outdated The Development of Arabic Logic, published in 1964.
