It must be apparent to careful observers of the trend of collecting that fads, like dogs, have their day, and that he who invests in books with a purely speculative interest must determine first the line in which he is to collect, and then ask himself if his choice is a profitable one, and interesting to others, no matter how attractive it may be to him. The great auction sales in America since the close of the Civil War are fairly indicative of the tastes and tendencies of the collector, while a study of prices is most interesting to those who care to investigate. One or two great central streams are to be found in all this variety of collecting. Within a brief period book libraries in Merica will rival those on the Continent and in England. In view of such libraries as those of Mr. Hoe, Mr. Morgan, Blr. Church, and Mr. Halsey, it is safe to say that they do rival the great private col lections abroad. History, it is said, repeats itself, and the experiences of these collectors, if written, would make interesting reading to the uninitiated. Most men who have formed great libraries have found their hobby a recreation, a relief, and a fountain of joy to their tired nerves, a veri table Elysium for their weary spirits. The same quali ties that insure success in the pursuit of fortunes, or honors of any sort, are essential in the book collector; interest, knowledge, and what may be termed scent. Many a successful find has come from a percep tion of what is great, lasting, and permanent, through instinct rather than knowledge. However, the vast majority of these dissertations by commentary usually remain stored in university libraries. Achieving Consilience: Translation Theories and Practice brings to the fore the theoretical and practical potential of these dissertations by commentary. It demonstrates how theories in Translation Studies can be fruitfully, consciously and systematically applied during the translation practice, thus helping to transcend the received wisdom according to which theorists and practitioners share little common ground. Additionally, the contributors to this volume evince their ability to apply a research-driven approach to their analysis by comparing their work with official translations or other field-related texts. As such, this essay collection will contribute to a better understanding of the translator’s decision-making process, and will offer future students valuable guidelines regarding the procedure normally followed in completing a dissertation by commentary.
