Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogi Veteres Librorum Ecclesiae Cathedralis Dunelm: Catalogues of the Library of Durham Cathedral, at Various Periods, From the Conquest to the Dissolution, Including Catalogues of the Library of the Abbey of Hulne, and of the Mss; Preserved in the Library of Bishop Cosin, at Durham In a Publication of this nature, consisting of Records derived from various sources, and of different dates, in illustration of the same subject, it may be expedient, in the commencement of our Prefatorial Remarks, to enter into a brief detail of the nature of the Records themselves, and of their relative bearing upon the object of this volume, the illustration of the Library of the Cathedral Church of Durham from the Conquest to the Dissolution. These preliminary statements and observations will tend to remove such difficulties as may present themselves in the course of our volume, and save much time to our readers. No. I., Page 1, Vetus Catalogus, &c. This is the first perfect Catalogue of the Library of the Prior and Convent of Durham upon record. It is preserved in the miscellaneous MS. B. IV. 24, of the Dean and Chapter, their successors; and we reprint it from the Catalogue of their MSS., published by the Dean and Chapter, in 1825. In the following pages this printed Catalogue will be perpetually referred to, under the name of Rud's Catalogue, and a few words may be here said of it, once for all. Book Rethinking and Recontextualizing Glosses

Download or read book Rethinking and Recontextualizing Glosses written by Patrizia Lendinara and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glossing was a scribal practice in use since antiquity, but it was in the Middle Ages that it acquired a wider meaning and a different role, becoming one of the most widespread forms of literacy in the Germanic West, including the British Isles. Most of the essays collected in this volume focus on the late Anglo-Saxon period, that is a well-identified time-frame spanning from the Benedictine Reform to the eleventh century. As recent scholarship has convincingly established, the second half of the tenth century and the beginning of the eleventh saw the blooming of Anglo-Saxon scholarship and a remarkable advance in educational practices. Within this cultural resurgence, glossing undoubtedly played no small role and was particularly vital in centres such as Abingdon, Canterbury, and Winchester. In the contributions to the present volume, the relationship between glosses and the text they accompany is always explored on the basis of their manuscript context. The essays are devoted to both Latin and Old English apparatuses of glosses as well as to specific items of the Old Norse and Old Saxon glossarial production.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thought-provoking look at the Angevin aristocracy's literary practices and historical record Coming upon the text of a document such as a charter or a letter inserted into the fabric of a medieval chronicle and quoted in full or at length, modern readers might well assume that the chronicler is simply doing what good historians have always done—that is, citing his source as evidence. Such documentary insertions are not ubiquitous in medieval historiography, however, and are in fact particularly characteristic of the history-writing produced by the Angevins in England and Northern France in the later twelfth century. In History and the Written Word, Henry Bainton puts these documentary gestures center stage in an attempt to understand what the chroniclers were doing historiographically, socially, and culturally when they transcribed a document into a work of history. Where earlier scholars who have looked at the phenomenon have explained this increased use of documents by considering the growing bureaucratic state and an increasing historiographical concern for documentary evidence, Bainton seeks to resituate these histories, together with their authors and users, within literate but sub-state networks of political power. Proposing a new category he designates "literate lordship" to describe the form of power with which documentary history-writing was especially concerned, he shows how important the vernacular was in recording the social lives of these literate lords and how they found it a particularly appropriate medium through which to record their roles in history. Drawing on the perspectives of modern and medieval narratology, medieval multilingualism, and cultural memory, History and the Written Word argues that members of an administrative elite demonstrated their mastery of the rules of literate political behavior by producing and consuming history-writing and its documents.
