Book excerpt: "Why a fictional memoir and why the arcane language? . . . to tell a story about a youth who is mentally a pre-teenager while physically developing as an adult? Because the works I admire most seem to fall into that literary genre: Marcel Proust, James Joyce, Gertrude Stein, Lawrence Durrell, and more recent writings like Robert Pirsigs Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and like Dave Eggers A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius. And because the youth, Vaney, expressed himself in arcane phrases like mama gift it to me and meaningful body language as well as mysterious seizures. Finally, why self-publish? Because the publishing industry may not yet be ready for major changes as it was unready for Proust, Joyce and others. Zahn Pesh hopes you enjoy this book."

Stan is a nerdy biochemist with a zero social life, who decides to clone the tissue into a Native-American woman. Impatient for the world to learn of his success, he injects the embryo with a serum which causes her to mature at ten-times the normal rate. He names her Minnehaha. Congress has made human cloning a federal offense, and Stanley is already under surveillance because of his work with fast-growing grains. World hunger might be alleviated, but commodity markets would be drastically affected. When Minnie's surrogate-mother is killed in an accident, the FBI learns the secret. The couple flees to Mexico, where he eventually marries her. Stanley works desperately to slow Minnie's rate of maturation, but he is unsuccessful. When they reach the same apparent age, he injects himself with the growth serum. Shortly thereafter, Minnie becomes pregnant. The child is normal, and is given up to the care of two physicians. The physicians raise the boy to adulthood, not knowing he is carrying the synthetic growth gene in its recessive form.

Book Axonopathy in Neurodegenerative Disease

Download or read book Axonopathy in Neurodegenerative Disease written by Samuel D. Crish and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Axons are the major output processes of neurons, responsible for transmitting information to other neurons and tissues throughout the body. The 150,000+ kilometers of axons make up half of the brain's volume and require a large amount of energy. Normal axon function is the product of a massive number of intra- and extra-cellular mechanisms working in concert. Perhaps not surprisingly, the axon is a site of vulnerability during normal aging and in disease states, although this has only been recently appreciated. Axonopathy, broadly defined as functional or structural defects in the axon or its terminal, is common across a wide range of neurodegenerative conditions, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s diseases, glaucoma, and as a result of neurotoxin exposure or drug treatment. This Research Topic assembles a series of original research papers, reviews, and commentaries that will illustrate both the commonalities and important differences across neurodegenerative disorders. Though this collection cannot address all aspects of this topic, it is our hope that these manuscripts will educate other scientists and inspire new investigations into axon dysfunction and degeneration.

Harris is about to respectfully disagree—with all the firepower he can muster.

Book excerpt: At last, the story that definitively bridges the world of Sourdough to that of Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. It’s all one Penumbraverse. James Bascule is adrift. College beckons—but not quite strongly enough to actually get him to campus. A trip to Europe showed him a world bigger than his Northern California upbringing—and yet, one broken heart later, Northern California is where he’s returned. Back to his old bedroom, paying his bemused parents rent with his new hobby, baking bread with the sourdough starter that is his only souvenir of what was apparently just a summer fling. The future is being built an hour or two down the highway—it’s 1985; the twenty-first century is just around the corner!—but that’s not his world either. While sitting in a Sonoma County bar, indulging in a little aimless day drinking with a junior college acquaintance, he meets a man. A man with . . . something like a plan. Has James ever heard of a “suitcase clone”? It’s a cutting of a vine used to clone and propagate noteworthy grapes—say, from a legendary European vineyard to an upstart Napa Valley operation. This man has an operation. He has a suitcase. He just needs an enterprising young accomplice up for an adventure. Just how deliriously fun and thrillingly mind-expanding an adventure, James can’t yet know. But we, of course, know how Robin Sloan crafts a story. Crossing the international literary-techno-conspiracy of Mr. Penumbra with the delicious experimentation of Sourdough, The Suitcase Clone is a tale that enriches and expands the Penumbraverse in ways you never saw coming, told by a mysterious narrator with an unexpected perspective on the great puzzles of life. Who could it be?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a selection of the papers presented at the meeting "Between Clone and Clinic" which was organised in March 1990 in Amsterdam by the dutch Organisation for Applied Research, TNO, and the University of Utrecht. The scope of this meeting was the development of biotechnological pharmaceuticals mainly made by recombinant DNA technology or monoclonal antibody techniques. All aspects concerning the development of the products after host cells producing them are obtained where discussed. The meeting was attended by twohundred specialists from all over the globe, including phar macologists, toxicologists, registration experts, Quality Assurence managers, production en gineers and physicians. Biotechnological pharmaceuticals are in general large and complex protein molecules. Bringing these products to the market poses other problems than encountered with the classical chemical drugs. The source of biotechnological pharmaceuticals are living cells. The function of cells are depend ent on many factors and the stability of production may be a problem. Good Laboratory and Manufactory Practices with Quality Control (GLP and GMP) are of paramount importance and are discussed in a number of papers. The products of the new biotechnology are often highly specific and only active in the human species. Also the side effects can only be studied in the clinical setting. Even when the product is active in animals there is the problem of antigenicity. During treatment the animals will produce antibodies which neutralise the activity. So safety testing may prove difficult.
