Book Casual Letters from South America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Casual Letters from South America Classic Reprint written by William Belmont Parker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-26 with total page 890 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Casual Letters From South America These letters were written at odd times during a journey which occupied the year and a half between the middle of 1919 and the end of 1920, and which included in its range some of the most interesting countries in the world: Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The mission Which took me to South America was a difficult but interesting task confided to me by the Hispanic Society of America, whose labours in the field of Hispanic Art and Literature are well known: namely, to write brief bio graphies of the leading men of each of the republics. These casual notes and jottings were in a sense by-products inci dental to that mission. They were cast in the form of letters to a friend, to amuse him with accounts of my daily life, and to remind him of scenes many of which he had himself in the past visited. Not intended originally for publication, they were rather in the nature of a record of day to day meetings, sights, impressions, and tribulations tempered by many de lightful experiences. They were jotted down in chance half-hours, in the hotel, on the train, in railway stations, whenever the occasion served, and partake inevitably Of the transient and ephemeral character of such casual impressions, while Whatever value they have rises, in some part at least, from the same causes. Like the photographs that accompany them, which were for the most part taken by members of the family or friends in the party, they are direct transcripts of experience, written on the spot, and set down before the image could fade from the retina or the impression grow dim in the mind. And while, no doubt, one might here and there correct the perspective and eliminate much that is purely momentary in the record, it would be at the cost of whatever spontaneity and immediacy it contains. Book Stefan and Lotte Zweig s South American Letters

Download or read book Stefan and Lotte Zweig s South American Letters written by Stefan Zweig and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-09-16 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in Vienna in 1881, Stefan Zweig was one of the most respected authors of his time. Foreseeing Nazi Germany's domination of Europe, Zweig left Austria in 1933. In 1941, following a successful lecture tour of South America and several months in New York, Stefan Zweig and his wife Lotte emigrated to Brazil. Despairing at Europe's future and feeling increasingly isolated, the Zweigs committed suicide together in 1942. Stefan Zweig was an incessant correspondent but as the 1930s progressed, it became difficult for him to maintain contact with friends and colleagues. As Zweig's correspondence all but ceased with the outbreak of World War II, little is known about his final years. Even less is known about Lotte Zweig, his second-wife, secretary and travel-companion. This book provides an analysis of the Zweigs' time together and for the first time reproduces personal letters, written by the couple in Argentina and Brazil, along with editorial commentary. Furthermore, Lotte finally emerges from her husband's shadows, with the letters offering significant insights into their relationship and her experience of exile.

Book Concepci n Gimeno de Flaquer 1850 1919 Her Personal Letters Short Stories and Journalism

Download or read book Concepci n Gimeno de Flaquer 1850 1919 Her Personal Letters Short Stories and Journalism written by Ana Isabel Simón Alegre and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2023-09-12 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concepción Gimeno de Flaquer (Alcañiz, 1850-Buenos Aires, 1919) was a Spanish journalist, newspaper editor, and author, who dedicated her life to the world of letters. She was also an intrepid international traveler at a time when it was not easy to cross the Atlantic. As a transatlantic author, she wrote novels, short stories, essays, opinion pieces, social commentary, and theater reviews. This book explores how Concepción Gimeno de Flaquer’s evolution as a writer was closely linked to the development of her political-literary project, in which a feminist activist agenda plays an important role. This critical edition contributes to existing research on Gimeno de Flaquer by examining a collection of texts that have not been studied in-depth. This monograph-length publication is the first one to feature a translation of significant portions of Gimeno de Flaquer’s work. 'Concepción Gimeno de Flaquer (1850-1919): Her Personal Letters, Short Stories, and Journalism' includes ten letters that Concepción Gimeno wrote to the Spanish actor and theatre entrepreneur Manuel Catalina y Rodríguez (1820-1886), seven short stories, and a selection of her seventeen most representative newspaper articles.

Book Last of the Old Time Outlaws

Download or read book Last of the Old Time Outlaws written by Karen Holliday Tanner and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2014-11-14 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soft-spoken, cheerful, handsome, and well dressed, George West Musgrave “looked more like a senator than a cattle rustler.” Yet he was a cattle rustler as well as a bandit, robber, and killer, “guilty of more crimes than Billy the Kid was ever accused of.” In Last of the Old-Time Outlaws, Karen Holliday Tanner and John D. Tanner, Jr., recount the colorful life of Musgrave (1877-1947), enduring badman of the American Southwest. Musgrave was a charter member of the High Five/Black Jack gang, which was responsible for Arizona’s first bank hold-up, numerous post office and stagecoach robberies, and the largest Santa Fe Railroad heist in history. Following a decade-long hunt, he was captured and acquitted of killing a former Texas Ranger. After this near brush with prison or execution, he headed for South America, where he gained fame as the leading Gringo rustler. It wasn’t until the 1940s that Musgrave’s age and poor health brought an end to a criminal career that had spanned two continents and two centuries. Incorporating previously unknown facts about the career of this frontier outlaw, the Tanners thoroughly document Musgrave’s half-century of crime, from his childhood in the Texas brush country to his final days in Paraguay.
