Book The Education of a Young Poet

Download or read book The Education of a Young Poet written by David Biespiel and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Biespiel’s supple memoir of becoming a poet will surely inspire other writers to embrace the bodily character of writing and feel the power and, sometimes, the emptiness of the act of writing poetry." —Publishers Weekly (starred review) The Education of a Young Poet is David Biespiel’s moving account of his awakening to writing and the language that can shape a life. Exploring the original source of his creative impulse—a great–grandfather who traveled alone from Ukraine to America in 1910, eventually settling as a rag peddler in the tiny town of Elma, Iowa—through the generations that followed, Biespiel tracks his childhood in Texas and his university days in the northeast, led along by the ""pattern and random bursts that make up a life." His book offers an intimate recollection of how one person forges a life as a writer during extraordinary times. From the Jewish quarter of Houston in the 1970s to bohemian Boston in the 1980s, from Russia’s Pale of Settlement to a farming village in Vermont, Biespiel remains alert to the magic of possibilities—ancestral journeys, hash parties, political rallies, family connections, uncertain loves, the thrill of sex, and lasting friendships. Woven throughout are reflections on the writer’s craft coupled with a classic coming–of–age tale that does for Boston in the 1980s what Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast did for Paris in the 1920s and Broyard’s Kafka Was the Rage did for Greenwich Village in the 1950s. Restless with curiosity and enthusiasm, The Education of a Young Poet is a singular and universal bildungsroman that movingly demonstrates, "in telling the story of one’s coming into consciousness, all languages are more or less the same."

Book Routledge Handbook of Urban Planning in Africa

Download or read book Routledge Handbook of Urban Planning in Africa written by Carlos Nunes Silva and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-28 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook contributes with new evidence and new insights to the on-going debate on the de-colonization of knowledge on urban planning in Africa. African cities grew rapidly since the mid-20th century, in part due to rising rural migration and rapid internal demographic growth that followed the independence in most African countries. This rapid urbanization is commonly seen as a primary cause of the current urban management challenges with which African cities are confronted. This importance given to rapid urbanization prevented the due consideration of other dimensions of the current urban problems, challenges and changes in African cities. The contributions to this handbook explore these other dimensions, looking in particular to the nature and capacity of local self-government and to the role of urban governance and urban planning in the poor urban conditions found in most African cities. It deals with current and contemporary urban challenges and urban policy responses, but also offers an historical overview of local governance and urban policies during the colonial period in the late 19th and 20th centuries, offering ample evidence of common features, and divergent features as well, on a number of facets, from intra-urban racial segregation solutions to the relationships between the colonial power and the natives, to the assimilation policy, as practiced by the French and Portuguese and the Indirect Rule put in place by Britain in some or in part of its colonies. Using innovative approaches to the challenges confronting the governance of African cities, this handbook is an essential read for students and scholars of Urban Africa, urban planning in Africa and African Development.

The god they rescued has been magically collared, unable to access his power. Worse still, Lexi's best friend is similarly shackled, blocking her shape-shifting abilities. Since they have precisely zero collar-opening keys, they need to make one--except the only person who can help them, the god of metalshaping, is dead. The good news? Lexi's already in the underworld, so she can try to find him. The bad news? The underworld isn't exactly a meadow full of butterflies, and venturing even deeper into it may be the quickest way to join the ranks of the dead herself. Book Group Pattern Matrices

Download or read book Group Pattern Matrices written by Roger Chalkley and published by . This book was released on 2022-05-02 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This mathematical monograph uses the concept of a group-pattern throughout to conveniently characterize various matrices of unusual historical interest. While a reader should be able to add and multiply matrices in a suitable context, a prior knowledge about groups is not needed. Numerous multiplication tables for sets of n objects are presented in Chapter 1. When the formal definition of a group appears in Chapter 2, it has been well motivated. A group-pattern for a group G that has n elements is provided by the n x n interior of any multiplication table for G in which the identity element of G occupies each of the n principal diagonal positions. An n x n group-pattern matrix results when each group element in the group-pattern is replaced by some element of a given set. If R is the set of all possible n x n group-pattern matrices for G with L that have complex numbers as components, then R has the properties of a ring with respect to matrix addition and multiplication. In addition to the n x n zero matrix, R also contains the n x n identity matrix for multiplication. Let A be an n x n group-pattern matrix for G and L that has variables as components with n distinct variables in its first row. A computer algebra program is included such that: when the input is A and the computer has sufficient capacity, the output specifies all of the automorphisms for G. It runs efficiently on today's typical personal computers when n does not exceed 11. The determinant of the preceding matrix A is expressible as a product of irreducible polynomial combinations of the variables with complex numbers as coefficients. The number of times each irreducible factor appears is equal to the total degree of the factor in the variables. Those factors are explicitly given by a computer algebra program when various details about G are known.

Book Emp Hoax

Download or read book Emp Hoax written by David Hathaway and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lew Rockwell: "Scholars like Garet Garrett, John T. Flynn, and Murray Rothbard have pointed out that a main way the State adds to its power and tyrannizes over the people is to whip up alleged threats from a foreign power. Given the threat, defenders of the State say, don't we need to take countermeasures, however high the cost? Those of us who grew up in the '50s and '60s remember vividly the "drop drills" that prepared schoolchildren for an impending nuclear attack. The government neglected to tell us that America was far better armed than the Soviets. The "threat" was concocted to justify a militarist policy and massive government spending. In this careful study, David Hathaway has given us a microstudy of the Orwellian State's technique to add to its power. On July 8, 1962, an atomic warhead was detonated in the Pacific. One purpose of the blast was to study the impact, if any, of ElectroMagnetic Pulse (EMP) effects. One incident is alleged to show such effects. Based on this incident, the government concluded that hostile powers could use EMPs to disable the electronic infrastructure of our country. Even after the Cold War ended, the government has continued to tout the threat posed by EMPs. Hathaway comments: "The alleged incident happened on the island of Oahu which is made up of the City and County of Honolulu. This incident has developed a cult following within the EMP science community. The incident allegedly involved blown fuses in a small number (less than 1%) of street light strings. It has been trotted out for decades as the single definitive proof of EMP effects on power grid and long-wire infrastructure." Hathaway isn't convinced. He presents a painstaking discussion of the incident, subsequent investigations, and the science behind EMP effects. He writes clearly about complicated science, and his conclusion is backed by abundant evidence: "EMP is a ridiculous notion; one that we are supposed to give up our money, our common sense, and our freedom to validate. From the state's perspective, there is always some area of life where people haven't yet developed the proper level of panic to make them tolerate the forced filling of state coffers in relation to that area. There is always something new to fear that the public can't quite grasp without the government to ratchet up its fears." David Hathaway deserves our gratitude for his excellent and timely account of a little-known propaganda campaign by the State." Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr. Chairman and Founder of Mises Institute Auburn, Alabama December 15, 2017
