Book Vince Guaraldi at the Piano 2d ed

Download or read book Vince Guaraldi at the Piano 2d ed written by Derrick Bang and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-05-15 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Vince Guaraldi's playful jazz piano themes for the early Peanuts animated television specials are well known, the composer himself remains largely unheralded. More than merely "the Peanuts guy," Guaraldi cut his jazz teeth as a member of combos fronted by Cal Tjader and Woody Herman, and garnered Top 40 fame with his Grammy Award-winning hit "Cast Your Fate to the Wind." This career study, extensively updated, gives Guaraldi long-overdue recognition, chronicling his years as a sideman; his attraction to the emerging bossa nova sound of the late 1950s; his collaboration with Brazilian guitarist Bola Sete; his development of the Grace Cathedral Jazz Mass; his selection as the fellow to put the jazz swing in Charlie Brown's step; and his emergence as a respected veteran in the declining Northern California jazz club scene of the 1970s. Ironically, his place in the jazz universe has grown exponentially since this book's initial 2012 publication, and this second edition acknowledges such honors and features a wealth of new material.

Book excerpt: A lively chronicle of the year that shaped popular music forever! Fifty years ago, friendly rivalry between musicians turned 1965 into the year rock evolved into the premier art form of its time and accelerated the drive for personal freedom throughout the Western world. The Beatles made their first artistic statement with Rubber Soul. Bob Dylan released "Like a Rolling Stone, arguably the greatest song of all time, and went electric at the Newport Folk Festival. The Rolling Stones's "Satisfaction" catapulted the band to world-wide success. New genres such as funk, psychedelia, folk rock, proto-punk, and baroque pop were born. Soul music became a prime force of desegregation as Motown crossed over from the R&B charts to the top of the Billboard Hot 100. Country music reached new heights with Nashville and the Bakersfield sound. Musicians raced to innovate sonically and lyrically against the backdrop of seismic cultural shifts wrought by the Civil Rights Movement, Vietnam, psychedelics, the Pill, long hair for men, and designer Mary Quant’s introduction of the miniskirt. In 1965, Andrew Grant Jackson combines fascinating and often surprising personal stories with a panoramic historical narrative.

Book excerpt: A one-of-a-kind celebration of America's greatest comic strip--and the life lessons it can teach us--from a stellar array of writers and artists Over the span of fifty years, Charles M. Schulz created a comic strip that is one of the indisputable glories of American popular culture—hilarious, poignant, inimitable. Some twenty years after the last strip appeared, the characters Schulz brought to life in Peanuts continue to resonate with millions of fans, their beguiling four-panel adventures and television escapades offering lessons about happiness, friendship, disappointment, childhood, and life itself. In The Peanuts Papers, thirty-three writers and artists reflect on the deeper truths of Schulz’s deceptively simple comic, its impact on their lives and art and on the broader culture. These enchanting, affecting, and often quite personal essays show just how much Peanuts means to its many admirers—and the ways it invites us to ponder, in the words of Sarah Boxer, “how to survive and still be a decent human being” in an often bewildering world. Featuring essays, memoirs, poems, and two original comic strips, here is the ultimate reader’s companion for every Peanuts fan. Book Phenomenological Inquiry in Psychology

Download or read book Phenomenological Inquiry in Psychology written by Ron Valle and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fine new book, the third in a series, brings psychologists up to date on the advances of phenomenological research methods in illuminating the nature of human awareness and ex periences. In the more congenial and welcoming intellectual climate of the 1990s, phe nomenological methods have moved to the forefront of discourse on research methods that support and advocate an expanding view of science. In Valle and King (1978), phenome nological methods were presented as alternatives to behavioral methods. In Valle and Halling (1989), phenomenological methods were advanced to perspectives in psychology. This new volume is even less cautious, indeed bolder, in relation to conventional methods and epistemologies. By now, people knowledgeable about psychology, and most psycholo gists, have digested the criticisms directed against methods that operationalize, quantify, and often minimize human behavior. In bringing us up to date on the growing power of phe nomenological methods, this volume brings welcome coherence and integrity to an in creasingly harried science attempting to reenchant itself with meaning and depth, an endeavor artfully exemplified by phenomenological inquiries of the last several decades.

Book Charlie Brown s Christmas Miracle

Download or read book Charlie Brown s Christmas Miracle written by Michael Keane and published by Center Street. This book was released on 2023-10-17 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the inspiring, unknown, against-all-odds story of how the classic animated holiday special A Charlie Brown Christmas almost never made it on to television. Professor and cultural historian Michael Keane reveals much in this nostalgia-inducing book packed with original research and interviews. Keane compellingly shows that the ultimate broadcast of the Christmas special—given its incredibly tight five-month production schedule and the decidedly unfavorable reception it received by the skeptical network executives who first screened it—was nothing short of a miracle. Keane explains why the show, despite its technical shortcomings, has become an uplifting and enduring triumph embraced by millions of families every Christmas season, even more than fifty years after its premiere. This gripping and joyful behind-the-scenes story of how the creators of A Charlie Brown Christmas struggled to bring the program to life will also help readers (and loyal fans) understand how America’s favorite Christmas special changed our popular culture forever. Keane masterfully weaves the momentous events of 1965 (the turbulent year of the program’s production) into his story, providing critical context for a profound new understanding of the program’s famous climactic scene, Linus’s spot-lit soliloquy answering the question repeatedly posed by Charlie Brown—"Isn't there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?”

Book The Complete History of Peanuts on Parade A Tribute to Charles M Schulz

Download or read book The Complete History of Peanuts on Parade A Tribute to Charles M Schulz written by William Johnson and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-01-11 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PEANUTS On Parade was the biggest tribute to PEANUTS creator, Charles Schulz, as it spanned over nine years in two states with over eight hundred statues of PEANUTS characters. Hosted by St. Paul, MN (2000–04) and Santa Rosa, CA (2005–07, '10), over five million fans from all fifty states and over sixty different countries searched for nearly eight hundred unique and individually designed five-foot statues of the Peanuts gang; each year featuring a different character. Go behind the scenes from the first discussions in the Mayor's office in 2000 to the final statues of 2010. Every step of PEANUTS on Parade is contained in these books. It all began as a modest tribute in St. Paul, MN as they wanted to honor one of their hometown heroes and was only slated to run for a single year. But the public demand was so overwhelming, it continued to run for another four years. After that, the tribute moved to Santa Rosa, California, home of the Charles Schulz Museum, where it ran for another three continuous years through 2007 plus an "encore" year in 2010. Each year wrapped up with an auction in which several statues went up for bids, each selling for thousands of dollars. The money raised paid for permanent bronze statues in both St. Paul and Santa Rosa, and began an art scholarship program in Schulz name which is still active today. Volume Two continues the Charles Schulz tribute after relocating to Santa Rosa. Charlie Brown, Woodstock, and Snoopy as Joe Cool were each highlighted in consecutive years in the city Charles Schulz called home for almost half of his life. This collection contains photos of every statue, an explanation behind each piece of art, and the history of the project itself; all straight from hundreds of artists, sponsors, organizers, and celebrities. Slide in additional research from the author, auction results, current location of dozens of statues, collectables, and trivia, and you have the complete history of Peanuts on Parade.

Book excerpt: The Great Depression tore countless American lives, families, and dreams apart. As the country struggled to survive against unimaginable domestic challenges, tensions across the sea would soon draw the world into a war beyond imagination. The stories of bravery and sacrifice made by those who fought in that world war are familiar to us, but it is often in the smaller stories that aren't told that a new perspective can be found. The Quinn family of Illinois has suffered alongside their neighbors during the Great Depression, but unlike many, they have never lost sight of the promise of better times ahead. The Depression is showing signs of lifting, and the family risks it all for their own dream. Together for whatever the future might bring, the family moves into a primitive farmhouse on their newly acquired land, hoping for salvation and independence. Life is bleak in those first years, as no amount of hard work can create a profit from the unyielding land. Over his wife's objections, Milburn Quinn makes a bold decision to present his children with a gift. Although it is intended to keep them grounded and entertained, this gift comes with dire consequences for all. Set in a time when the world's norms are being turned upside down like the sod behind a plow, Fate Rode the Wind tells a story of one family's undying patriotism, unending trials, and unconditional love.
