Book excerpt: The definitive inside story of the case that captivated the nation. . . and the verdict that no one saw coming. It was the trial that stunned America. On July 5, 2011, nearly three years after her initial arrest, Casey Anthony walked away, virtually scot-free, from one of the most sensational murder trials of all time. She'd been accused of killing her daughter, Caylee, but the trial only left behind more questions: Was she actually innocent? What really happened to Caylee? Was this what justice really looked like? In Imperfect Justice, prosecutor Jeff Ashton, one of the principal players in the case's drama, sheds light on those questions and much more, telling the behind-the-scenes story of the investigation, the trial, and the now-infamous verdict. Complete with never-before-revealed information about the case and the accused, Ashton examines what the prosecution got right, what they got wrong, and why he remains completely convinced of Casey Anthony's guilt.

Book The Casey Anthony Murder Trial

Download or read book The Casey Anthony Murder Trial written by Claudette Walker and published by . This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive look at the law, media, judge, jury, defendant, lawyers, witnesses, and evidence, in this high profile murder trial. This is what most people never see: the events that occur during a murder trial. With all the elements of an American tragedy, complete with the elevation of the mother to celebrity status, Casey Anthony stood accused of murdering her two-year-old daughter. Caylee was last seen with her mother, and the toddler's disappearance went unreported for 31 days. A massive worldwide search ensued, before the discovery of Caylee's remains in a murky Florida swamp six months later. In the trial, both the lawyers and witnesses seemed to cross the lines between fact and fiction during this spectacle of horrors. The jury was selected from the authors hometown, Pinellas County, Florida. From jury selection to sentencing, this is a comprehensive interpretation of a first-degree murder trial and our American justice system, for good or bad. This is not a storybook, but the history of this trial, done in real time, including the observations and opinions of the two writers with legal explanations provided by the "house lawyer," a criminal defense attorney, as the trial was ongoing. This is a look at the American legal system, in action. The Casey Anthony Murder Trial is the most complete real time readable transcript known.

The search for Caylee made front-page headlines. But there was one huge question mark hanging over the case: the girl's mother. As the investigation continued and suspicions mounted, Casey became the prime suspect. In October, based on new evidence against Casey—her erratic behavior and lies, her car that showed signs of human decomposition—a grand jury indicted the young single mother. Then, two months later, police found Caylee's remains a quarter of a mile away from the Anthony home. Casey pled not guilty to charges of murder in the first degree, and she continues to protest her innocence. Did she or didn't she kill Caylee? Mommy's Little Girl is the story of one of the most shocking, confusing, and horrific crimes in modern American history.

Book excerpt: New York Times bestseller Presumed Guilty exposes shocking, never-before revealed, exclusive information from the trial of the century and the verdict that shocked the nation. When Caylee Anthony was reported missing in Orlando, Florida, in July 2008, the public spent the next three years following the investigation and the eventual trial of her mother, Casey Anthony. On July 5, 2011, the case that captured headlines worldwide exploded when, against all odds, defense attorney Jose Baez delivered one of the biggest legal upsets in American history: a not-guilty verdict. In this tell-all, Baez shares secrets the defense knew but has not disclosed to anyone until now and frankly reveals his experiences throughout the entire case—discovering the evidence, meeting Casey Anthony for the first time, being with George and Cindy Anthony day after day, leading defense strategy meetings, and spending weeks in the judge's chambers. Presumed Guilty shows how Baez, a struggling, high-school dropout, became one of the nation's most high-profile defense attorneys through his tireless efforts to seek justice for one of the country's most vilified murder suspects.

Book Mothers on Trial

Download or read book Mothers on Trial written by Phyllis Chesler and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Updated and revised with seven new chapters, a new introduction, and a new resources section, this landmark book is invaluable for women facing a custody battle. It was the first to break the myth that mothers receive preferential treatment over fathers in custody disputes. Although mothers generally retain custody when fathers choose not to fight for it, fathers who seek custody often win—not because the mother is unfit or the father has been the primary caregiver but because, as Phyllis Chesler argues, women are held to a much higher standard of parenting. Incorporating findings from years of research, hundreds of interviews, and international surveys about child-custody arrangements, Chesler argues for new guidelines to resolve custody disputes and to prevent the continued oppression of mothers in custody situations. This book provides a philosophical and psychological perspective as well as practical advice from one of the country’s leading matrimonial lawyers. Both an indictment of a discriminatory system and a call to action over motherhood under siege, Mothers on Trial is essential reading for anyone concerned either personally or professionally with custody rights and the well-being of the children involved.

Book excerpt: Caylee Marie Anthony (August 9, 2005 - 2008) was an American girl who lived in Orlando, Florida, with her mother, Casey Marie Anthony (born March 19, 1986), and her maternal grandparents, George, and Cindy Anthony. On July 15, 2008, she was reported missing in a 9-1-1 call made by Cindy, who said she had not seen Caylee for 31 days and that Casey's car smelled like a dead body had been inside it. When a jury acquitted Casey Anthony in 2011 of charges she murdered her daughter Caylee, jurors would later state they could not convict Casey of murder because they did not know how Caylee died. But evidence that could have led investigators in the right direction always existed - and it did not point squarely at Casey. "In Re: Caylee Anthony (the shocking truth explained" is an explosive presentation of a fact pattern, that reveals for the first time, how evidence, which began to emerge shortly after Caylee's remains were found in December of 2008, pointed directly to the culprits.
