Book Caseless Ammunition

Download or read book Caseless Ammunition written by Fouad Sabry and published by One Billion Knowledgeable. This book was released on 2022-08-12 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Is Caseless Ammunition Caseless ammunition, also known as caseless cartridges, is a type of weapon-cartridge configuration that does away with the cartridge case. The cartridge case is the component of a weapon-cartridge that is typically responsible for holding the primer, propellant, and projectile together as a single unit. Instead of using a cartridge case, the propellant and primer are attached to the projectile in some other fashion, such as either inside or outside the projectile, depending on the arrangement. This eliminates the need for the cartridge case. Book Lightweight Small Arms Technologies

Download or read book Lightweight Small Arms Technologies written by Fouad Sabry and published by One Billion Knowledgeable. This book was released on 2022-08-18 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Is Lightweight Small Arms Technologies The mission of the Lightweight Small Guns Technologies (LSAT) program, which is supported by the Joint Service Small Arms Program of the United States, is to dramatically cut down on the weight of small arms and the ammunition that goes along with them. The LSAT program is the United States military's most recent effort to replace already-existing small guns, following in the footsteps of a number of previous projects designed to study technological advancements in small arms. Lightening the load of small guns is the first big step toward boosting troops' lethality and survivability, according to both tactical principles and the research that was conducted as part of past small arms initiatives. Book COMBUSTIBLE AMMUNITION FOR SMALL ARMS 4 DEVELOPMENT OF IMPROVED OBTURATOR DEVICES FOR CASELESS AMMUNITION

Download or read book COMBUSTIBLE AMMUNITION FOR SMALL ARMS 4 DEVELOPMENT OF IMPROVED OBTURATOR DEVICES FOR CASELESS AMMUNITION written by and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An obturator, reusable for approximately 60 firings of 7.62 mm caseless ammunition, was designed, fabricated, and evaluated. This obturator consisted of two metal split rings with a neoprene O-ring positioned between them. A 7.62 mm caseless test weapon (Model 4) was designed and fabricated for this investigation, and a Springfield 1903 rifle was similarly modified for shoulder firing 7.62 mm caseless ammunition before the U.S. Army Infantry Board during June 1962. A combination obturator/firing pin projectile (designated 'Bulpin') was designed, fabricated, and evaluated for caliber .30 caseless solid propellant ammunition. Two such Bulpin projectiles, one in front of a bore-size caseless charge containing a combustible primer and one behind it for ignition and obturation, provided a solid propellant caseless system which used a new firing pin and seal for each firing. After each firing, the rear projectile was pushed forward by the next Bulpin round for use as the next projectile. There are indications that, in caseless solid propellant ammunition, the increased ratio of propellant charge length to propellant charge diameter results in lower projectile velocity and higher peak pressure and that increased molding pressure in the forming of the propellant results in higher velocity and higher peak pressure.

Book Cartridges

Download or read book Cartridges written by Herschel C. Logan and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Logan was a commercial artist and writer with a strong firearms interest. This book contains excellent drawings, labels, and identification for cartridge types illustrating development from paper cartridge to the modern types. Patient delving into this volume will show an alert reader how paper cartridges became metal cartridges. Most general readers have no conception, for example, how many competing systems were in place during the Civil War. By 1873 all had become obsolete but the two still in use toda--rimfire and center fire. Logan divides cartridge types into groups: paper, combustible, separate primed, self-contained, rimfire, and center fire. Each of these divisions break down into variations. All systematic discussions must use or grapple with these divisions. The most common Civil War cartridge was a paper wrapper which held black powder and a bullet. The cartridge had to be torn or bitten open, the powder poured down the barrel, followed by the bullet and rammed until compact. A percussion cap was added to the weapon to ignite the powder. A quantum leap forward was a metal cartridge with a hole in the base. It was loaded into the weapon and the percussion cap was added outside. Finally a complete cartridge was developed which could be placed inside the weapon and fired when the chamber was closed. The author shows what the competing systems were and how they worked. His book is a good introduction. Any serious collector or student of cartridge history will need more references, but Logan's Cartridges can be the beginning place for the study. There are a few errors and, obviously, omissions but the work is excellent for its vintage. Few fifty year old books on technology can claim that.--By Antonius Tio.--For Amazon.com.

Book excerpt: The author, a New York Times reporter, traces the invention and mass distribution of the AK-47 assault rifle, and its effects on war. He traces the invention of the assault rifle, following the miniaturization of rapid-fire arms from the American Civil War, through World War I and Vietnam, to present-day Afghanistan, where Kalashnikovs and their knockoffs number as many as 100 million, one for every seventy persons on earth. It is the weapon of state repression, as well as revolution, civil war, genocide, drug wars, and religious wars; and it is the arms of terrorists, guerrillas, boy soldiers, and thugs. From its inception to its use by more than fifty national armies around the world, to its role in modern-day Afghanistan, he discusses how the deadly weapon has helped alter world history.

Book Caseless Ammunition Heat Transfer

Download or read book Caseless Ammunition Heat Transfer written by D. E. Adams and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat transfer studies were performed for small and medium caliber caseless ammunition (1) to evaluate the thermal performance of existing fixtures and ammunition, (2) devise and evaluate mathematical techniques by which the thermal behavior of future weapons may be predicted and problem areas identified prior to weapon design and (3) obtain information which can lead to improvement in future weapons and ammunition. The study continues previous work on 5.56mm and 27mm caseless ammunition. Some measurements of the heating of an M16 rifle firing cased 5.56mm ammunition are initially reported as a basis of comparison of caseless ammunition. The primary emphasis of the 5.56mm testing is directed towards High Ignition Temperature Propellant (HITP) rounds. Firing tests and laboratory cook-off tests were conducted with HITP and analysis was conducted to evaluate the potential of caseless ammunition during burst firing schedules. The 27mm evaluations consist of the results of single-shot and rapid-fire testing, laboratory cook-off tests, and predictions of gun heating to be expected during rapid-fire bursts. A mathematical model was developed which provides an adequate tool by which the thermal effects of rapid fire may be predicted based upon single-shot testing. (Author).
