Book Case Teaching in Surgery Classic Reprint

Download or read book Case Teaching in Surgery Classic Reprint written by Herbert Leslie Burrell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Case Teaching in Surgery The following histories of cases have been collected and printed to facilitate the case method of teaching in surgery at the Harvard Medical School. Dr. Blake has for three years found that in the latter part of the last year in the course in surgical instruction this method of teaching has served to assemble the more or less disjointed knowledge that the students have acquired in the various fundamental and applied courses. The writers believe that the case method needs wider recognition in the art of teaching surgery. There are many and varied advantages in the method. It gives the instructor a boundless amount of mate rial; he may utilize all his histories in private and hospital practice; he may use the histories of cases that have been under the care of other surgeons; he may present cases that illustrate the variations in the common forms of disease; he may collect rare and unique examples of disease; he may present histories that are complete or incomplete; and he may, if he chooses, omit important details from the history of a case. It gives the instructor a boundless amount of material; he may utilize all his histories in private and hospital practice; he may use the histories of cases that have been under the care of other surgeons; he may present cases that illustrate the variations in the common forms of disease; he may collect rare and unique examples of disease; he may present histories that are complete or incomplete; and he may, if he chooses, omit important details from the history of a case. The most important advantage that the method presents is its adaptability and elasticity to the needs of the instructor. No one can make a success of this method unless he adopts his own individual way of conducting the exercises. The instructor should guide and suggest, but the student should talk and discuss the case. In other words, the student should be active and productive, rather than passive and receptive. Each instructor, after trying the method will adopt a plan of his own and, after all, this is the fundamental principle of good teaching. A very definite advantage is that the instructor may develop the instruction along whatever lines he may elect; for example, the discussion of a case may bear upon etiology, symptomatology, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, prognosis, or treatment. A very definite advantage to the instructor is that, if the students are allowed to do the questioning, they will quickly demonstrate their need of instruction, whether it be in diagnosis, prognosis, or treatment. In the explanatory note Dr. Blake describes his personal method of using case teaching in surgery. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preparatory and After Treatment in Operative Cases Since then the practitioner's early educational opportunities have been much increased. He is better educated, better equipped and occupies a position toward his patient and the surgeon which is no longer as objectionable as obtained previously. However, there is still room for improvement in this regard, and the writer feels that the education given the practitioner as the outcome of methods of teaching surgical technic is not such as to place him in the precise position which is his due. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods of Teaching Surgery This paper has been prepared at the request of the Committee on Programme, to serve as an introduction to a discussion upon the best methods of teaching sur gery, and is intended to ask questions rather than to answer them. We have to consider: (1) Who are to be taught? (2) What is to be taught? (3) How it is to be taught. Those who are to be taught include two classes (l) The average medical student, who is presumably to become a general practitioner The men who wish to specially fit themselves fior surgical work. There is a third class, namely, those who wish to learn only the least possible amount of surgery which will enable them to get the degree of M.D., but these we need not consider to-day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comparative Surgery: With Illustrative Cases It is the purpose of this communication to report some of [179] the cases which indicate, it is hoped, a new development in our present plan of teaching operative surgery; for latterly as the work has been conducted, it has necessarily subjected vagrant animals to the risks and discomforts attending more or less serious surgical procedures carried out for the relief of merely hypothetical maladies. Four years ago an effort was made in our medical school - and so far as I know for the first time in any school - to change in a radical way those methods of conducting an Opera tive course, which, for the past generation, have been widely adopted and generally regarded as most practicable by the surgical teachers in the leading medical institutions. Book A Collection of Remarkable Cases in Surgery Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Collection of Remarkable Cases in Surgery Classic Reprint written by Paul Fitzsimmons Eve and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 840 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Collection of Remarkable Cases in Surgery He has not presumed to suppose this to be a collection of all the remarkable cases which have occurred in surgery, but of course only those accessible to him most deserving a place, and entitled to credit. The object has been merely to gather for preservation the valuable material now existing mostly in a perishable form; to col lect the important and instructive cases from our journals, &c., and arrange them for future reference. And whatever else may not be derived from the work now before the reader, it certainly suggests one practical lesson; this is, not to be easily discouraged in desperate surgical cases. In making this collection we early experienced l'embarras des richesses. Much matter prepared for it has necessarily been omitted for lack of space, even in a large volume. This we hope will be ample apology for the absence of several cases which otherwise would have appeared. None, we believe, have been admitted into the collection but such as are strictly authentic; as it has been our aim to reject all of a doubtful character. In a work where we have found so much said for us, the labor has been light; and the only merit, if there be any at all, is in the selection of the matter. Of this the profession must judge. Book Surgical Operations of the Head

Download or read book Surgical Operations of the Head written by Fedor Krause and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-25 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Surgical Operations of the Head: Illustrated by Clinical Observations, for Physicians and Surgeons It approaches its subject in a novel way, by the presentation and discussion of actual cases, which are carefully followed from the be ginning, through the operative treatment, to the end-result. These cases illuminate the text and give a touch of practical interest to what might otherwise be a dry discussion. This is, in fact, an application of the case-teaching method to surgery. It is distinctly a personal work, dominated by the genius of Fedor Krause, whose extensive experience over the entire field of surgery, together with his known ability as a teacher, has made him eminently fitted for the task. A rich supply of clinical material was directly at hand, in the Augusta Hospital. But the presentation is by no means a narrow one; various methods and modifications of technique are discussed, their advantages compared, and the reasons given why one should be preferred over another. In this American adaptation I have attempted first of all to give an accurate transcription of the German text, even at the expense of fluency. I have modified and re-arranged freely wherever it seemed advisable. Where German practice differs from ours, I have entirely rewritten sections and paragraphs. Technical and controversial. Dis eussions have been abridged; new matter, illustrations, and cases have been added. To avoid complicating the text, no attempt has been made to distinguish the alterations and additions. I have, in short, attempted to naturalize this German book, to adapt it for the serious study of the American student, and for the reference and assistance of the working American surgeon.
