Book Continuing Bonds in Bereavement

Download or read book Continuing Bonds in Bereavement written by Dennis Klass and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of the continuing bonds model of grief near the end of the 20th century revolutionized the way researchers and practitioners understand bereavement. Continuing Bonds in Bereavement is the most comprehensive, state-of-the-art collection of developments in this field since the inception of the model. As a multi-perspectival, nuanced, and forward-looking anthology, it combines innovations in clinical practice with theoretical and empirical advancements. The text traces grief in different cultural settings, asking questions about the truth in our interactions with the dead and showing how new cultural developments like social media change the ways we relate to those who have died. Together, the book’s four sections encourage practitioners and scholars in both bereavement studies and in other fields to broaden their understanding of the concept of continuing bonds.

Book Life is Forever

Download or read book Life is Forever written by Susy Smith and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 1999-12 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a well-documented, highly entertaining book giving case histories that prove there is evidence that life is forever. The Susy Smith Project at the Unviersity of Arizona is at present acknowledged as the source of the Afterlife Codes research, but Susy Smith herself had established a reputation as a writer of critical and objective books in the psychic field many years before she established the Survival Research Foundation and evolved the idea of scientific study of the possibility of communication from the dead by codes. When writing Life is Forever, published originally in 1974, Miss Smith made a comprehensive search of all the literature of the psychic field and chose the best example of each type of experience—deathbed vision, ghosts with a goal, guardian angels, possession, voice phenomena and all the other curious and interesting means by which dead or dying people managed to provide evidence of their continued existence. This important book has been out of print too long. It will be welcomed back. Visit the Afterlife Codes website of the Susy Smith Project at www.afterlifecodes.com.

Book Spirited Things

    Book Details:
  • Author : Paul Christopher Johnson
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2014-05-07
  • ISBN : 022612293X
  • Pages : 351 pages

Download or read book Spirited Things written by Paul Christopher Johnson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-05-07 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word “possession” is anything but transparent, especially as it developed in the context of the African Americas. There it referred variously to spirits, material goods, and people. It served as a watershed term marking both transactions in which people were made into things—via slavery—and ritual events by which the thingification of people was revised. In Spirited Things, Paul Christopher Johnson gathers together essays by leading anthropologists in the Americas that reopen the concept of possession on these two fronts in order to examine the relationship between African religions in the Atlantic and the economies that have historically shaped—and continue to shape—the cultures that practice them. Exploring the way spirit possessions were framed both by material things—including plantations, the Catholic church, the sea, and the phonograph—as well as by the legacy of slavery, they offer a powerful new way of understanding the Atlantic world.

Book Psychics Sensitives and Somnambules

Download or read book Psychics Sensitives and Somnambules written by Rodger I. Anderson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claimants of paranormal abilities have always attracted controversy and fascination, and sometimes rigorous study by scientists. Charles Bailey, an Australian medium, was seemingly able to materialize different objects--animate and inanimate--under conditions which made it difficult to conceive how they could have been normally produced. Sumitra Singh, a woman of Northern India who in 1984 became subject to epileptic-type seizures, claimed to be possessed by spirits of the dead. Franck Kluski was a Polish poet, banker and physical medium who specialized in both human and animal materializations. This biographical dictionary contains profiles of 330 psychics worldwide from Tony Agpaoa to Elenor Zugun, each accompanied by a bibliography listing the primary sources consulted. The primary focus is on those claimed psychics who have figured prominently in the history of the subject, though some lesser-known figures are included to show how rich, varied, and colorful that history has been. The aim throughout is to present each case as fairly and dispassionately as the facts allow, with a particular eye for accuracy in details and presentation. The approach is historical, not apologetic or accusatory, making the work ideally suited as a permanent reference.

Rhine's findings and his first popular book, New Frontiers of the Mind, ignited excitement and controversy--among not only scientists but the public at large. Book Renal Cell Carcinoma

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ronald M. Bukowski
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2000-04-10
  • ISBN : 1592592295
  • Pages : 488 pages

Download or read book Renal Cell Carcinoma written by Ronald M. Bukowski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-04-10 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renal cell carcinoma represents a heterogeneous group of tumors, the most common of which is clear cell adenocarcinoma. The annual incidence of this tumor appears to be rising and approximately 12,000 individuals die from this cancer annually in the United States. One third of patients who present have metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis, and another 40% who undergo nephrectomy will ultimately develop this complication. Over the past 10 years, a significant amount of new information concerning the epidemiology, mole- lar and immunologic characteristics, and therapy for patients with these tumors has appeared. The recognition that inherited forms of renal cancer exist, and that chromosomal abn- malities can be identified in these tumors, suggested a genetic basis for renal cell carcinoma. The familial cancer syndrome, Von Hippel Lindau disease, provided the setting in which the genetic abnormalites associated with the development of renal cancer were first described. Abnormalities of the VHL gene have also been detected in sporadic clear cell carcinoma, and it has now been recognized that approximately 80 % of these tumors will demonstrate ch- acteristic alterations. Currently the functions of the VHL protein are being investigated, and the biology of clear cell carcinoma of the kidney is under study. Additionally, papillary carcinomas of the kidney appear to express different molecular defects, and these are now being unraveled.

Book The Economics of Human Rights

Download or read book The Economics of Human Rights written by Elizabeth M. Wheaton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-21 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economics plays a key role in human rights issues as decision-makers weigh the incentives associated with choosing how to use scarce resources in the context of committing or escaping human rights violence. This textbook provides an introduction to the microeconomic analysis of human rights utilizing economics as a lens through which to examine social topics including capital punishment, violence against women, asylum seeking, terrorism, child abuse, genocide, and hate. Whether analyzing the decisions made in capital punishment cases, the causes and consequences of genocide, or the impact of terrorist acts on domestic and international decision-making, the science of economics provides tools and a systematic method of analysis and policy recommendation. This key text presents a method for integrating the social sciences of economics and human rights to create new opportunities for the investigation of social issues. Within each chapter, readers gain a fundamental understanding of a specific human rights issue, the decision-makers and the decision-making process involved, and the benefits and costs leading to the decisions. Experts on each issue, drawn from a variety of fields, contribute to each chapter and present first-hand accounts and different perspectives on each issue. The detailed analyses and accounts provided also explore the potential incentives involved in the prevention and termination of human rights violations. Aiming to further economic inquiry and enhance interdisciplinary research, this textbook serves as a multi-purpose guide for a range of readers. Students, researchers, and educators, as well as those working in organizations supporting victims of human rights violations and policy-makers facing human rights challenges, will find this book informative and engaging.

Book Developmental Origins of Health and Disease

Download or read book Developmental Origins of Health and Disease written by Lucilla Poston and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-22 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of the early life developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) in adults has stimulated a new approach to understanding disease trajectories, with major public health implications. Indeed, the principle of the 'lifecourse of disease' now influences health policies internationally. Environmental influences during pregnancy and early life that affect lifelong health are well documented, but there is a new focus on the preconception period and the significance of paternal health on the fetus. This fully revised second edition highlights scientific and clinical advances in the field, exploring new understanding of mechanisms such as epigenetics and the increasingly recognised role of external influences, including pollution. The book is structured logically, covering environment, clinical outcomes, mechanisms of DOHaD, interventions throughout the lifespan and finally implications for public health and policy. Clinicians and scientists alike will improve their understanding of the developmental origins of health and disease with this essential text.
