Book Science Agriculture and the Politics of Policy

Download or read book Science Agriculture and the Politics of Policy written by Ian Scoones and published by Orient Blackswan. This book was released on 2006 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science, Agriculture and the Politics of Policy examines the intersections of globalisation, technology and politics through a detailed, empirically-based examination of agricultural biotechnology in India. The focus is on Bangalore and Karnataka, a part of India which has seen a massive growth in biotech enterprises, experimentation with GM cotton and a contested policy debate about the role biotechnology should play in economic development. The book asks what does this new suite of technologies mean - for society, for politics and for the way agriculture, food and rural livelihoods are thought about? Can biotech deliver a second Green Revolution, and so transform agriculture and rescue the countryside and its people from crisis and poverty? Or is it more complex than this? Through a detailed case study, the aim of the book is to discuss, question and refine these broader debates, locating an understanding of biotechnology firmly within an understanding of society and politics.

Book Global Dimensions of Intellectual Property Rights in Science and Technology

Download or read book Global Dimensions of Intellectual Property Rights in Science and Technology written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1993-02-01 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As technological developments multiply around the globeâ€"even as the patenting of human genes comes under serious discussionâ€"nations, companies, and researchers find themselves in conflict over intellectual property rights (IPRs). Now, an international group of experts presents the first multidisciplinary look at IPRs in an age of explosive growth in science and technology. This thought-provoking volume offers an update on current international IPR negotiations and includes case studies on software, computer chips, optoelectronics, and biotechnologyâ€"areas characterized by high development cost and easy reproducibility. The volume covers these and other issues: Modern economic theory as a basis for approaching international IPRs. U.S. intellectual property practices versus those in Japan, India, the European Community, and the developing and newly industrializing countries. Trends in science and technology and how they affect IPRs. Pros and cons of a uniform international IPRs regime versus a system reflecting national differences.

Book Biotechnologies at Work for Smallholders

Download or read book Biotechnologies at Work for Smallholders written by John Ruane and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents a unique series of 19 case studies where agricultural biotechnologies were used to serve the needs of smallholders in developing countries. They cover different regions, production systems, species and underlying socio-economic conditions in the crop (seven case studies), livestock (seven) and aquaculture/fisheries (five) sectors. Most of the case studies involve a single crop, livestock or fish species and a single biotechnology. Prepared by scientists and researchers who were directly involved in the initiatives, the authors were able to provide an insider's guide to the background, achievements, obstacles, challenges and lessons learned from each case study.

Book Medical Biotechnology Innovation in India

Download or read book Medical Biotechnology Innovation in India written by P Omkar Nadh and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-06-03 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the medical biotechnology industry in India through the lens of a critical political economy. It discusses the sharp trajectory of growth in the biotechnology business and the state of investments, subsidies, and patents which propelled the rise of the industry in India. The book uses in-depth interviews and case studies to analyse the roles of various financial actors, state institutions, and academia in the medical biotechnology ecosystem. Focusing on the relationship between India’s neoliberal policies and the swift growth of the industry, the author examines the merits and demerits of the current market-driven biomedical ecosystem exploring the trends in the industry, biomedical start-ups, the use of human resources, and capital accumulation process. The book reiterates and emphasises the need for the democratisation of scientific and medical work and for striking a balance between economic gains and public health priorities. Comprehensive and insightful, this book will be of interest to scholars and researchers of science technology society studies, public health, economics, business studies, medical sociology, public policy, and political science.

Book Biotechnology in Indian Agriculture

Download or read book Biotechnology in Indian Agriculture written by N. Chandrasekhara Rao and published by Academic Foundation. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debate on biotechnology focuses on the likely risks instead of objectively assessing the technology on a case-by-case basis to come out with suitable policy implications. This book fills this serious gap by discussing the case of the first biotech product in India, Bt cotton. Focusing on the socioeconomic aspects of agricultural biotechnology rather than the technology, it covers a range of issues relating to the potential and performance of new products and offers valuable suggestions for policy making. After introducing the nature and organization of biotechnology, the patterns of product development are presented. It uses the results of two longitudinal surveys conducted in all the cotton growing agro-climatic zones of Andhra Pradesh and employs a conceptual framework to bring out the performance of this technology.

Book Risk Perception of Agricultural Biotechnology in India

Download or read book Risk Perception of Agricultural Biotechnology in India written by Mark Chong and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several researchers have proposed that the moral aspects of risk provide a better explanation and prediction of risk perception than the psychometric or cultural model, neither of which accounts for moral concerns. This study is possibly the first to empirically assess if the moral, psychometric and cultural models can explain risk perception of agricultural biotechnology - in this case Bt eggplant - by farmers in a developing country such as India. The findings show that the psychometric, cultural, and moral models do not fully account for the risk perception of Bt eggplant by Indian farmers. In conclusion, the author proposes that any theory or model that purports to explain and predict risk perception of agricultural biotechnology in developing countries may need to include economic benefits, safety concerns and accountability as key variables.

Book Emerging Consequences of Biotechnology

Download or read book Emerging Consequences of Biotechnology written by Krishna R. Dronamraju and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2008 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal message of this book is that thermodynamics and statistical mechanics will benefit from replacing the unfortunate, misleading and mysterious term "entropy" with a more familiar, meaningful and appropriate term such as information, missing information or uncertainty. This replacement would facilitate the interpretation of the "driving force" of many processes in terms of informational changes and dispel the mystery that has always enshrouded entropy. It has been 140 years since Clausius coined the term "entropy"; almost 50 years since Shannon developed the mathematical theory of "information"--Subsequently renamed "entropy." In this book, the author advocates replacing "entropy" by "information," a term that has become widely used in many branches of science. The author also takes a new and bold approach to thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. Information is used not only as a tool for predicting distributions but as the fundamental cornerstone concept of thermodynamics, held until now by the term "entropy." The topics covered include the fundamentals of probability and information theory; the general concept of information as well as the particular concept of information as applied in thermodynamics; the re-derivation of the Sackur-Tetrode equation for the entropy of an ideal gas from purely informational arguments; the fundamental formalism of statistical mechanics; and many examples of simple processes the "driving force" for which is analyzed in terms of information.
