Book Music Therapy as Postvention for Survivors of Suicide

Download or read book Music Therapy as Postvention for Survivors of Suicide written by Alexis Elaine Edmonds and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bereaved and those who have experienced trauma have received support through music therapy. However, there has been no research on the effectiveness of music therapy as a therapeutic intervention for those who have experienced the loss of a loved one by suicide. While every loss presents its own challenges, those who experience a suicide loss may need extra support to process the traumatic nature of the death. This study aims to explore the current research on grief and trauma to determine what information can be applied to the care of those who have experienced a suicide loss. The present study is a group case study of survivors of suicide who have experienced a loss within the last 3 years. Participants received weekly music therapy sessions for four weeks. All participants completed the Inventory of Traumatic Grief, prior to and at the conclusion of the music therapy sessions, and the pre and post test scores were compared. Additionally qualitative data was collected throughout the sessions, indicating any common themes that emerged throughout the sessions and the participants reactions to the interventions, as well as in a short questionnaire following the four sessions.

The changing role of music in expressions of grief and mourning throughout history and in different cultures reflects the changing attitudes of society towards life and death itself. This volume investigates the role of music in mourning rituals across time and culture, discussing the subject from the multiple perspectives of music history, music psychology, ethnomusicology and music therapy.

Book Music Therapy for Children who Have Experienced the Loss of a Parent

Download or read book Music Therapy for Children who Have Experienced the Loss of a Parent written by Ronelle Hauptfleisch and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The loss of a parent is considered to be one of the most painful and tragic experiences a child could suffer. Bereavement can leave children feeling isolated, with fewer material and nonmaterial resources. This qualitative multiple case study was designed to explore the role that music therapy could play in supporting children who have lost a parent. Five children participated from a mainstream school in Cape Town who had suffered the loss of a parent in the three years prior to the study. Participants0́9 ages ranged between seven and twelve and 26 sessions were conducted altogether. Excerpts from video recordings of the sessions were written as thick descriptions and, through interpretive phenomenological analysis, a total of six themes were identified. It was found that the music therapy processes offered clients access to supportive client-therapist relationships, a safe space for emotional expression and reflection on significant relationships, opportunities for assertive expression, and a space where they could express views on beliefs and rituals. Participants identified internal and external resources that served to support them during their processes of bereavement.

Book A Music Therapy Approach to Grief

Download or read book A Music Therapy Approach to Grief written by Grace Dalsey O'Donnell and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grief is becoming more widely understood and acknowledged for its potential to cause severe impairment when not appropriately processed or treated. However, there is a lack of clear agreement in the literature on symptomatology, diagnosis criteria and best practice for treatment, which lends itself naturally to an inherent gap in understanding and treatment options. Further, stigma and misconceptions of grief pervade society and contribute to the challenges faced by grieving individuals. This paper serves to provide a thorough review of grief literature including the natural grieving process, complicated grief diagnoses, current standard care treatments and the use of music therapy in addressing grief. Music therapy's role in grief work is yet to be fully understood but holds tremendous potential and is becoming a more widely recognized treatment modality for grief. Music therapy is highly adaptable, impacts the individual biologically, psychologically, and socially, and can be situated into an integrative approach. The purpose of this project was to design a program proposal integrating the most effective treatment approaches for grief found in the literature including cognitive behavioral therapy, group and community- based approaches, and bereavement counseling, into a community-based music therapy grief support group. The overall wellness of our society could benefit greatly from a treatment designed to educate and support individuals through the process and processing of grief, especially if we were to adopt a proactive approach, and this proposed program is one potential option.

Book The Effects of Original Songwriting in Music Therapy Sessions on the Hospice Experience and Bereavement Process of Patients and Their Families

Download or read book The Effects of Original Songwriting in Music Therapy Sessions on the Hospice Experience and Bereavement Process of Patients and Their Families written by Jill Christine Anderson and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects that music therapy, and songwriting in particular, have on the family members of hospice patients. Participants (N=8) were chosen from an available group of families who experienced songwriting in hospice care, whether the patient wrote all or part of a song, or the family wrote a song about the patient. Individual interviews were conducted with each participant, and each participant answered a series of questions regarding their hospice experience, their perception of their loved one's experience, their bereavement, and their experience with music therapy. Results showed that families found hospice overall to be a very positive experience, and that music therapy played a large role in all their perceptions of hospice care. All participants initiated discussion of music therapy and their family's song early in the interview, and all had many positive things to say about the music therapist, the song, and the meaning the song had for them and their family. In the majority of cases, the song written in music therapy was played at the memorial or funeral service. Other common themes noted were that for many, the song sent a message, embodied their loved one, or gave their loved one a sense of purpose. Many of the participants knew nothing or little of music therapy prior to their experience in hospice, and they all found it to be rewarding, and much more involved than they expected. Many of the participants still listen to the song, although a few indicated that it was difficult for them or that they could not listen to it yet. However, they all said that the song has a special meaning for them.

Book Singing an Imaginal Dialogue

Download or read book Singing an Imaginal Dialogue written by Yasmine A. Iliya and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to understand the experience of singing an imaginal dialogue with a deceased loved one. This bereavement-specific music therapy intervention was an adaptation of Shear, Frank, Houck, and Reynolds' (2005) imaginal dialogue intervention and was heavily influenced by Austin's (2008) method of vocal psychotherapy. Following Shear's (2006) use of the spoken imaginal dialogue with therapists, the guiding question of the present study was: What are creative arts therapists' experiences of singing the intervention? The sample consisted of nine female creative arts therapists with a minimum of three years of clinical experience. It included women who identified as minorities in the realms of race, culture, ethnicity, and/or sexual orientation. Participation entailed one music therapy session with a music therapist who was not the researcher. After the session, participants completed a questionnaire and were interviewed about their experience by the researcher. Distress levels during and after the intervention rated on a scale of zero to 100, and these quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The qualitative data were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006) and six themes were found: (a) I cried the whole time - Elicitation of profound emotional expression; (b) I was scared to sing - Discomfort, nervousness, and anxiety; (c) I felt safe - Containment and support; (d) I felt his/her presence - Emotional and spiritual connection to the deceased; (e) I'm finally grieving and have greater acceptance - Helpful opportunity for grief resolution; (f) It bypassed the intellectual - More effective to sing than speak. These findings support previous research on grief therapy and imaginal dialogue and contribute to the field of expressive arts therapies by deepening our understanding of the applications of singing an imaginal dialogue with a deceased person. More research is needed to gain an understanding of grief-specific music therapy interventions for adults. -- Abstract
