Download or read book Writing Tangier written by Ralph M. Coury and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing Tangier discusses an array of topics relating to the literature on Tangier from the seventeenth century to the present. Major questions include: Why has Tangier come to play an important role in contemporary world literary history as a signifier in the literary imagination; what is the nature of the inter-textual output produced through Paul Bowles' translations of the oral tales of a circle of uneducated storytellers (including Mohammed Mrabet and Larbi Layachi) and the text (For Bread Alone) brought to Bowles by the literate Mohamed Choukri; how do academics, artists, and writers who have been based in the city or who have written about it assess the various socio-economic, political, and cultural factors that have shaped its cultural production and the relationship of this production to the celebrated hybrid aspects of its identity; does the success of the literature of Tangier reflect a truly new multicultural cosmopolitanism, or does it stem from the fact that this literature is congenial to Westerners, that it is understood in terms that they themselves define, and that much of it (including productions in Arabic prepared with the expectation of translation) has even been «written to measure» for them?

Book excerpt: War-games champion Udo Berger is finally on holiday. Travelling to the Costa Brava with his long-ignored girlfriend, Ingeborg, there they meet another vacationing German couple, Charly and Hanna, and a band of shady locals. They have fun, see the sights, relax. Then, late one night, Charly disappears without a trace. Desperate to solve the mystery, Udo refuses to leave, even after Ingeborg returns home. Increasingly frightened, the situation slips beyond his grasp and Udo suddenly realizes that the consequences of this ‘game’ are much more serious than he ever imagined. TRANSLATED BY NATASHA WIMMER ‘Capering, weird, rascally and short... The Third Reich is giddily funny, but it is also prickly and bizarre enough to count among Bolaño’s first-rate efforts’ The Economist ‘A mesmerizing tale: sleek, linear, easily digested, beautifully translated... Classic Bolaño’ Washington Post
Download or read book Un caso del comisario Carrasco written by Christian Roth and published by Caligrama. This book was released on 2019-07 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Swimmer in the Secret Sea written by William Kotzwinkle and published by David R. Godine Publisher. This book was released on 2010 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An immediate classic when first published in Redbook in 1975, Swimmer in the Secret Sea went on to be included in Prize Stories 1975: The O. Henry Awards and then published separately as a paperback. We are proud to restore to print this popular and critically acclaimed novella about Laski and Diane, a sculptor and his wife, and their struggle to bring a new life into the world, set against the backdrop of a cold Maine winter. Author William Kotzwinkle, well-known for his many enduring children's books such as Trouble in Bugland and his novelization of the movie E.T. The Extraterrestrial, is equally adept at writing seriously and poetically about life in extremis. This story of a father-to-be and his painful love for his wife and stillborn son will stay with readers for a lifetime."--Publisher's website.
