Book Musculoskeletal Disorders and the Workplace

Download or read book Musculoskeletal Disorders and the Workplace written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-05-24 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year workers' low-back, hand, and arm problems lead to time away from jobs and reduce the nation's economic productivity. The connection of these problems to workplace activities-from carrying boxes to lifting patients to pounding computer keyboards-is the subject of major disagreements among workers, employers, advocacy groups, and researchers. Musculoskeletal Disorders and the Workplace examines the scientific basis for connecting musculoskeletal disorders with the workplace, considering people, job tasks, and work environments. A multidisciplinary panel draws conclusions about the likelihood of causal links and the effectiveness of various intervention strategies. The panel also offers recommendations for what actions can be considered on the basis of current information and for closing information gaps. This book presents the latest information on the prevalence, incidence, and costs of musculoskeletal disorders and identifies factors that influence injury reporting. It reviews the broad scope of evidence: epidemiological studies of physical and psychosocial variables, basic biology, biomechanics, and physical and behavioral responses to stress. Given the magnitude of the problem-approximately 1 million people miss some work each year-and the current trends in workplace practices, this volume will be a must for advocates for workplace health, policy makers, employers, employees, medical professionals, engineers, lawyers, and labor officials.

Book Preventing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Download or read book Preventing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome written by Bekir Kelceoglu and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Today's office environments operate more quickly than before, thanks to computer technology. Unfortunately, the speed in the work environment has drawbacks, such as lack of sufficient work-breaks and bodily activity. As a result, office workers are not as active as in the past. Rosenbaum and Ochoa (1993) describe Carpal Tunnel Syndrome as a group of symptoms and signs caused by pinched or squeezed median nerve inside the carpal tunnel. In terms of occupational risks, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is closely related to wrist repetition, deviated wrist angles, and excessive tendon force (Marklin, 1999). According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Statistics, one of the main reasons for the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is repetitive motion. Definition of repetitive motion may differ, of course, depending upon the nature of the work. In assembly plant, therefore, repetitive motion may not be the same as in an office environment. Repetitive typing, however, has become the number one reason for causing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome after the year 2000, according to the same data (U.S. Department of Labor 2005). With those problems in mind, a possible solution has been proposed in this study. The main concept behind the proposed solution was to keep the muscles, tendons, and nerves moving around the carpal tunnel area, therefore preparing them for possible future problems. This study begins with exploring the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome problem. In Chapter 1, basically, background information and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome statistics are presented. These statistical data were retrieved from the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Statistics. In Chapter 1, also, study objectives and research methodologies are discussed. Chapter 2 is totally devoted to investigate anatomies of the hand and wrist. After understanding the related anatomies, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and its causes, treatment types, and prevention techniques were reported. A proposed solution for the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome prevention is discussed in Chapters 3 and 4. The Generic Product Development Process is also employed after Chapter 3. In other words, designing the proposed solution begins in Chapter 3. Additionally, "core exercises" which are beneficial in preventing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome were chosen in Chapter 3. Testing and refinements were shown in Chapter 4, after a series of design process steps. Finally, in Chapter 5, conclusions and future suggestions for this study have been shown.
