Book excerpt: Excerpt from Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site One questions if Carl Sandburg would have had such a wide date range on hand, or if his clutter would have been more representative of the issues at hand on any given day. The park was at first administered by the Blue Ridge Parkway, headquartered in Asheville, nc, 40 miles to the north, until the park was opened and became its own administrative unit in 1975. In those intervening seven years, much work was done to the home and property. This included rearranging collections in the basement of the Main House and Swedish House, restoring and rehabilitating dilapidated structures and dams, and, according to anecdotal evidence, the disposal of many artifacts deemed too voluminous in multiple copies (such as original milk bottles). It is possible that copies of administrative materials, such as Superintendent's Annual Reports, within the Blue Ridge Parkway's archives may include references to the early administration of Carl Sandburg Home nhs. A review of the Parkway's archives by that park's Curator did not locate any documents pertaining to the administration of carl. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Carl Sandburg Home: Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site, North Carolina In one of my grandfather's bureau drawers at Connemara, along with a Hohner harmonica and a number of the scarves that he wrapped around his neck for warmth, I once came upon a box containing a small packet of tiny cards that had been printed in the Far East. On one side of each card was an Oriental painting, and on the opposite side, a prov erb. It was an odd little packet, and I took a liking to it, so my grandfather gave it to me. Years later I was to come upon it again in my own drawer and find new meaning in at least one of the sayings on the cards. It was the ancient Persian proverb: If I had two loaves of bread I would sell one to buy white hyacinths to feed my soul. After my grandfather's death in 1967, I heard that he had sometimes quoted that proverb and then added his own twist to it, Nor let us forget the reverse of that: 'if I had two baskets of white hyacinths, I would hope to God that I could sell one to buy some bread to feed myself. This book was released on 2013-06-13 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Swedish House at Connemara was built in the early 1850s by Christopher G. Memminger (1803- 1889), a wealthy lawyer and politician from Charleston who later became secretary of the treasury for the Confederate States of America. After his death, his heirs sold the estate, which was then known as Rock Hill, to trustees for Mary Fleming Gregg (1839- died after 1900). Her husband, William H. Gregg, Jr. (1834- 1895), was the son of the famed William H. Gregg, Sr., builder of one of the South's earliest textile mills, at Graniteville, South Carolina, in the 1840s. In 1900, Mary Fleming Gregg sold Rock Hill to Ellison Adger Smyth (1847- 1942), “dean of the Southern textile industry,” according to his obituary in the New York Times.
