Book excerpt: Carl Sandburg Home NOTE: NO FURTHER DISCOUNT FOR THIS PRINT PRODUCT-OVERSTOCK SALE -- Significantly reduced list price while supplies last This official National Park Handbook provides an official introduction to the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site in Flat Rock, North Carolina. It is divided into 3 sections. Part 1 tells of the Sandburg family's life in the home; Part 2 presents an authoritative biographical essay on the man and his works; Part 3 provides concise tourist information and reference materials. Carl Sandburg, nationally renowned poet, biographer, lecturer, newspaper columnist, folksinger, author of American fairytales, and winner of two Pulitzer Prizes, provided broad and enduring 20th century insight into the circumstances, worth and spirit of the American people. He passionately championed for the everyday working person, those who may neither have had the words nor the power to speak for themselves. The historic landscape consists of the Sandburg residence, a dairy goat barn complex that is home to the park's Connemara Farms goat herd, sheds, rolling pastures, mountainside woods, five miles of hiking trails on moderate to steep terrain, two small lakes, several ponds, flower and vegetable gardens, and an apple orchard. Book excerpt: The most visited site in the National Park system, the 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway winds along the ridges of the Appalachian mountains in Virginia and North Carolina. According to most accounts, the Parkway was a New Deal "Godsend for the needy," built without conflict or opposition by landscape architects and planners who traced their vision along a scenic, isolated southern landscape. The historical archives relating to this massive public project, however, tell a different and much more complicated story, which Anne Mitchell Whisnant relates in this revealing history of the beloved roadway.

Book Always the Young Strangers

Download or read book Always the Young Strangers written by Carl Sandburg and published by HMH. This book was released on 2015-10-20 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pulitzer Prize–winning poet and historian recalls his midwestern boyhood in this classic memoir. Born in a tiny cottage in Galesburg, Illinois, in 1878, Carl Sandburg grew with America. As a boy he left school at the age of thirteen to embark on a life of work—driving a milk wagon and serving as a hotel porter, a bricklayer, and a farm laborer before eventually finding his place in the world of literature. In Always the Young Strangers, Sandburg delivers a nostalgic view of small-town life around the turn of the twentieth century and an invaluable perspective on American history.

Book Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site Classic Reprint

Download or read book Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site Classic Reprint written by Sara L. van Beck and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site One questions if Carl Sandburg would have had such a wide date range on hand, or if his clutter would have been more representative of the issues at hand on any given day. The park was at first administered by the Blue Ridge Parkway, headquartered in Asheville, nc, 40 miles to the north, until the park was opened and became its own administrative unit in 1975. In those intervening seven years, much work was done to the home and property. This included rearranging collections in the basement of the Main House and Swedish House, restoring and rehabilitating dilapidated structures and dams, and, according to anecdotal evidence, the disposal of many artifacts deemed too voluminous in multiple copies (such as original milk bottles). It is possible that copies of administrative materials, such as Superintendent's Annual Reports, within the Blue Ridge Parkway's archives may include references to the early administration of Carl Sandburg Home nhs. A review of the Parkway's archives by that park's Curator did not locate any documents pertaining to the administration of carl.
