Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1858, some 30,000 gold seekers stampeded to the Fraser River. Scores perished during the gruelling journey, but some made their fortune and many pressed on northwards to the creeks of the Cariboo. Originally compiled by Art Downs, founder of Heritage House, this is a vivid and detailed account of the first gold strikes, the miners who made them and the incredible efforts to establish transportation routes and build roads to the Cariboo goldfields. Here are the stories of the legendary Williams Creek diggings, which yielded a golden harvest of over $2.6 million in 1862, and creeks with names like Lightning, Jack of Clubs and Last Chance. Also included are excerpts from Walter B. Cheadle's journals. Cheadle and Lord Viscount Milton became the first tourists to the Cariboo in 1863. Richly descriptive and touched with humour, Cheadle's first-hand account is a fascinating window into Cariboo history.

Book The Cariboo Gold Rush Story

Download or read book The Cariboo Gold Rush Story written by Don Waite and published by Surrey, B.C. : Hancock House. This book was released on 1988 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These vivid stories describe the devastation of the Indians by the whiteman's disease, Billy Barker "the heart of the Cariboo", and John Cameron, who buried his wife four times. The rugged men and women of BC's own gold rush stride off the impossible trails and out of the incredible scenery of the late 1800's in this stirring account of the gold strikes, the gigantic gains, and the strike-outs. This book began in the fall of 1975 when I made my initial trip, alone and by car, to Barkerville to talk to the descendants of early miners and to photograph some of the original gold mining sites. In order to capture the same thrill of adventure experienced by gold seekers, I wanted to sleep out under the stars. As my arrival at Barkerville occurred after dark, I left the main highway and followed a dirt road in search of a place to bed down away from vehicular noises. A short time after dozing off, I was awakened by some loud banging of tin cans which sent me scurrying for the safety of my car. I turned on the headlights to discover that the noisemakers were a couple of black bears. I had camped in the hill overlooking the town dump. En route to the one time gold capital of the world, I stopped off at the museum at Clinton and departed from this treasure house with the understanding that I would pay the curator a longer visit on my way home. As it turned out, I found Barkerville so intriguing that I overstayed my alotted time, resulting in a non-stop drive homeward which had me passing through Clinton in the middle of the night. Unfortunately, other commitments took priority over the over the research and several years elapsed before I was able to carry on with the project which became this book. I then realized the value of the interviews from that 1975 trip.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cariboo Trail: A Chronicle of the Gold-fields of British Columbia Finlayson did not know exactly what to do. The fur-trader hated the miner. The miner, wherever he went, sounded the knell of fur-trading; and the trapper did not like to have his game preserve overrun by fellows who scared off all animals from traps, set fire going to clear away underbrush, and owned responsibility to no authority. NO doubt these men were argonauts drifted up from the gold diggings Of California no doubt they were searching for new mines; but who had ever heard of gold in Vancouver Island, or in New Caledonia, as the mainland was named If there had been gold, would not the company have found it Finlayson probably thought the easiest way to get rid of the unwelcome visitors was to let them go on into the dangers of the wilds and then spread the news Of the disappointment bound to be theirs. Lured by dreams of wealth and a better life, William, Gilbert and Thomas Rennie set out for the Cariboo goldfields in the spring of 1862. But because of their late departure, they encountered unimaginable consequences. They crossed the prairies in good order with the famous Father Lacombe and continued along the well-marked trail of the Overlanders into the mountains. But after that, nothing went according to plan. Deadly Innocent captures the essence of this drama in its riveting account of love, hope and the limits of human endurance. The third of Bill Gallaher’s chronicles of the Cariboo gold rush, Deadly Innocent is a captivating addition to his treasure trove of stories about the gold rush and fascinating characters from B.C.’s past.

Book excerpt: It was 1862 and the Cariboo Gold Rush was in full swing. Sophia Cameron, the Beauty of Barkerville, lay dying of typhoid when her husband, John Cariboo Cameron, made one last promise to his fading young wife. The Promise is a compelling story of a great love and an epic struggle to honour a dying wife's final request: to take her body home to eastern Canada. Told in the voice of Robert Stevenson, Cameron's friend and mining partner, the story travels with the two men as they leave the frozen goldfields of BC and carry Sophia's body by sled, ship and rail to a tree-shaded cemetery near Cornwall, Ontario. However, she was buried amid mistrust and dark suspicions because Cameron refused to open the coffin-did it truly contain his lovely, young wife? In this his first novel, Bill Gallaher provides unique insight into a famous legend of the gold rush. Intrigued by the level of commitment and loyalty in the Cariboo Cameron saga, Bill Gallaher first wrote a song about the Camerons and as a result of further extensive research, wrote The Promise. He is now an author of several well-received books, The Journey: The Overlanders' Quest for Gold; A Man Called Moses: The Curious Life of Wellington Delaney Moses; Deadly Innocent; and The Frog Lake Massacre. Bill lives with his family in the Cariboo region of British Columbia.
