Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1896, Wenceslao Gálvez y Delmonte fled the violence of Cuba’s war for independence and settled in Tampa. He soon made his new home the focus of a work of costumbrismo, the Spanish-language genre built on closely observing the everyday manners and customs of a place. Translated here into English, Gálvez’s narrative mixes evocative descriptions with charming commentary to bring to life the early Cuban exile communities in Ybor City and West Tampa. The writer’s sharp eye finds the local characters, the barber shops and electric streetcars, the city landmarks and new Cuban enclaves. One day, Gálvez offers his thoughts on the pro-independence activities of community leaders like Martín Herrera and Fernando Figuerdo. On another, our exiled bourgeois intellectual author wryly recounts his new life as a door-to-door salesman and lector reading aloud to workers in a cigar factory. This scholarly edition includes photographs and newspaper clippings, a foreword on Gálvez’s extraordinary pre-exile years, extensive notes to the translation, and a wealth of other supplementary material putting the author’s life and work in context. A volume in the series New World Diasporas, edited by Kevin A. Yelvington

Book The Caribbean before Columbus

Download or read book The Caribbean before Columbus written by William F. Keegan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-03 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The islands of the Caribbean are remarkably diverse, environmentally and culturally. They range from low limestone islands barely above sea level to volcanic islands with mountainous peaks; from large islands to small cays; from islands with tropical rainforests to those with desert habitats. Today's inhabitants have equally diverse culture histories. The islands are home to a mosaic of indigenous communities and to the descendants of Spanish, French, Dutch, English, Swedish, Danish, Irish, African, East Indian, Chinese, Syrian, Seminole and other nationalities who settled there during historic times. The islands are now being homogenized, all to create a standard experience for the Caribbean tourist. There is a similar attempt to homogenize the Caribbean's pre-Columbian past. It was assumed that every new prehistoric culture had developed out of the culture that preceded it. We now know that far more complicated processes of migration, acculturation, and accommodation occurred. Furthermore, the overly simplistic distinction between the "peaceful Arawak" and the "cannibal Carib," which forms the structure for James Michener's Caribbean, still dominates popular notions of precolonial Caribbean societies. This book documents the diversity and complexity that existed in the Caribbean prior to the arrival of Europeans, and immediately thereafter. The diversity results from different origins, different histories, different contacts between the islands and the mainland, different environmental conditions, and shifting social alliances. Organized chronologically, from the arrival of the first humans-the paleo-Indians-in the sixth millennium BC to early contact with Europeans, The Caribbean before Columbus presents a new history of the region based on the latest archaeological evidence. The authors also consider cultural developments on the surrounding mainland, since the islands' history is a story of mobility and exchange across the Caribbean Sea, and possibly the Gulf of Mexico and Florida Straits. The result is the most up-to-date and comprehensive survey of the richly complex cultures who once inhabited the six archipelagoes of the Caribbean.

Book Perspectives in Caribbean Psychology

Download or read book Perspectives in Caribbean Psychology written by Frederick W. Hickling and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2012-10-15 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perspectives in Caribbean Psychology attempts to record the unique psychological character of those who live in the Caribbean and more broadly people of African-Caribbean heritage. It considers the impact of colonialism, the struggle for domination by various European and North American countries through history on individuals, and the unique psychological realities that have emerged from attempts to come to terms with the realities of Caribbean culture and experience. Contributors address prevalent issues of violence, mental illness, stigma, psychopathology and HIV/AIDS, and chronicle the adaptation, cultural retentions, resilience and migratory tenacity of the Caribbean people, both within their geographic communities and in the Diaspora. This book makes the case for a definitively Caribbean psychology with a range of chapters on psychological assessment, understanding and treatment modalities culled from a Caribbean experience. It will be an invaluable source of reference for anyone with an interest in multicultural psychology, as well as for social work and mental health professionals working with members of the Caribbean community.
