Book Caribbean Achievement in Britain

Download or read book Caribbean Achievement in Britain written by Winniey E. Maduro and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores a range of psychosocial resources, and discusses them in relation to lived experiences and outcomes in educational and socioeconomic domains. It offers close insights into the complex relationship between psychosocial resources, such as familial influence, religiosity, aspirations, and socioeconomic progression in Britain. This is achieved by exploring the lived experiences of a sample group of Caribbeans, one of Britain's most internally diverse but discernibly disadvantaged social groups. Detailed accounts of the participants’ experiences are offered to provide insights to a wide range of stakeholders in education. Teachers, behaviour specialists, parents, policy advocates, psychologists, social researchers, social justice warriors and lay people will all benefit from this empirically informed perspective on psychosocial resources and their implications for educational attainment and socioeconomic progress. The book implores the reader to appreciate more fully how psychosocial resources play out in outcomes of achievement and progression, and how such outcomes may be improved among members of some disadvantaged social groups. It will be an invaluable resource for students, researchers, and educators in the fields of Education, Sociology, and Psychology.

Book International Perspectives on Theorizing Aspirations

Download or read book International Perspectives on Theorizing Aspirations written by Garth Stahl and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Perspectives on Theorizing Aspirations offers new insights and guidance for those looking to use Bourdieu's tools in an educational context, with a focus on how the tools can be applied to issues of aspiration. Written by contributors from the UK, USA, Australia, Nigeria, Jamaica and Spain, the book explores how Bourdieu's tools have been applied in recent cutting-edge educational research on a range of topics, including widening participation, migration, ethnicity, and class. The contributors consider how aspirations are theorized in sociology, as well as exploring the structure/agency debates, before recapitulating Bourdieu's tools and their applicability in educational contexts. A key question running through the chapters is: how does social theory shape research? Including recommended readings, this is essential reading for anyone looking to use Bourdieu in their research and for those studying aspiration in an educational research setting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The steady immigration of black populations from Africa and the Caribbean over the past few decades has fundamentally changed the racial, ethnic, and political landscape in the United States. But how will these "new blacks" behave politically in America? Using an original survey of New York City workers and multiple national data sources, Christina M. Greer explores the political significance of ethnicity for new immigrant and native-born blacks. In an age where racial and ethnic identities intersect, intertwine, and interact in increasingly complex ways, Black Ethnics offers a powerful and rigorous analysis of black politics and coalitions in the post-Civil Rights era.

Book Education in St Maarten from 1954 to 2000

Download or read book Education in St Maarten from 1954 to 2000 written by Milton George and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-02-29 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book narrates the development of education in St. Maarten between 1954 and 2000, by tapping into the experience of the protagonists, giving them a voice in the recording of their own history. As such, it lends a voice to postcolonial subjects, who have often been bypassed or forgotten by most traditional historians, and thus rendered voiceless. The work is based on both written and oral history, including interviews with important educational agents, as well as former pupils and parents. By doing this, it describes the overall framework of education in St. Maarten within the juridical space of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The first part of the book deals with the Dutch Antilles in general, and with St. Maarten in particular, examining the effects of slavery and its consequences. Both before and after the restructuration of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1954, education was essentially shaped by the different religious denominations on the island. Over time, St. Maarten’s schooling system developed from an almost non-existing entity to a well-structured one, which closely resembled the educational framework in the Netherlands, its former colonial ruler. Part two reflects the respondents’ reactions to several issues concerning education in St. Maarten. It was only after local St. Maarten students became teachers that topics about the island found their place in the curriculum. Even though it took some time to integrate St. Maarten in the curriculum, the people did not (and still do not) have the feeling that education has let them down. It is only now that they are beginning to question whether, and to what extent, schools were, and are, able to positively influence young people. In the past, they believed that schooling – however foreign its curriculum may have been – did actually help them to find a niche in the world. After studying both written and oral sources, the book concludes that the coat of arms of St. Maarten is representative of its findings about education on this island: Semper progrediens – “Always progressing”. Education in St. Maarten has progressed without showing radical breaks.
