Book Person centred Health Care

Download or read book Person centred Health Care written by Stephen Buetow and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Person-centred health care is increasingly endorsed as a key element of high-quality care, yet, in practice, it often means patient-centred health care. This book scrutinizes the principle of primacy of patient welfare, which, although deeply embedded in health professionalism, is long overdue for critical analysis and debate. It appears incontestable because patients have greater immediate health needs than clinicians and the patient-clinician encounter is often recognized as a moral enterprise as well as a service contract. However, Buetow argues that the implication that clinician welfare is secondary can harm clinicians, patients and health system performance. Revaluing participants in health care as moral equals, this book advocates an ethic of virtue to respect the clinician as a whole person whose self-care and care from patients can benefit both parties, because their moral interests intertwine and warrant equal consideration. It then considers how to move from values including moral equality in health care to practice for people in their particular situations. Developing a genuinely inclusive concept of person-centred care – accepting clinicians as moral equals – it also facilitates the coalescence of patient-centred care and evidence-based health care. This reflective and provocative work develops a constructive alternative to the taken-for-granted principle of primacy of patient welfare. It is of interest to students and academics in the health and caring sciences, philosophy, ethics, medical humanities and health management.

Book Teacher Education at Hispanic Serving Institutions

Download or read book Teacher Education at Hispanic Serving Institutions written by Janine M. Schall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-05 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Documenting the collaborative work of staff at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley over the course of several years, this text explores the many ways in which teachers and faculty must engage with the institutional designation of Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). In doing so, the volume illustrates how colleges of education might provide Latinx students with the education, support, and environment they require to thrive. As the number of HSIs continues to grow, this text provides much needed insight into how colleges and universities can better enact their HSI status. Chapters document the practices and experiences of faculty as they look to increase family engagement, utilize social and cultural values to inform instruction, and acknowledge historically institutionalized legacies of oppression and marginalization. By highlighting the successes and challenges associated with serving Latinx students, the text draws out the ways in which teacher education and development might be structured at an HSI, in order that the institutional identity is reflected in curricula, pedagogy, scholarship, and community engagement. The text also explains important distinctions between HSIs and other minority serving institutions and illustrates the importance of HSIs to Latinx students. This text will be of great interest to graduate and postgraduate students, researchers, academics, libraries, professionals and policy makers in the field of higher education, multicultural education, educational leadership, teacher education and Race & Ethnicity Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The many unfounded myths and fears that surround working with people at the end of their lives are dispelled in this thoughtful book, and the authors provide both practical and emotional support for those involved in caring for dying patients. The book covers everything from the philosophy behind the practice to the diverse roles in the multi-disciplinary team, as well as current challenges and opportunities facing end of life care, with an emphasis on how therapy and arts therapies can be integrated effectively. It also looks at palliative care models that address all aspects of a patient's wellbeing and conveys the latest research and challenges in the field, bridging the gap between theory and the realities of working with patients on a daily basis. Using material from artists and therapists working in the field, the varying demands of inpatient, outpatient and home care are described, as well as the processes of bereavement, how to handle the practicalities of loss and the help that therapists can give at this stage. How artists and therapists with experience of working at the end of life can be involved in other areas of care such as supporting older people in care homes and those living with dementia is also discussed. The book also introduces the important area of health promotion, and how there is a growing responsibility to change people's attitudes towards death, dying and bereavement. Clear, practical examples are given as to how this might be achieved. Full of professional advice and career guidance, this book will be an invaluable tool for those working with patients nearing the end of life and those considering working in this area, as well as students in training.
