Download or read book Course on Care of Trees Classic Reprint written by G. H. Allen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-19 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Course on Care of Trees How does a tree grow and why? Life is truly a wonderful thing. We seldom consider how wonderful, and even when we allow ourselves to ponder on this great subject, or study it carefully and intelligently, we are wholly unable to grasp the wonders and marvels and magnitude of it. The subject is unquestionably so much greater and so far beyond our comprehension that we are only faintly able to realize its meaning and feel that we are only a part of it, an important part to be sure, but still only a manifestation of it. And yet, in us, life is so highly developed that we may intelligently think and consider and study the great laws of life, that same life which renders us the very privilege of living and experiencing and thinking. Book Planting and Care of Shade Trees Classic Reprint

Download or read book Planting and Care of Shade Trees Classic Reprint written by James Elwood Davis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Planting and Care of Shade Trees Many of the early plantings of shade trees are from 75 to 100 years old. Because of the comparatively short life of some species of trees used and because of hard conditions under which shade trees often grow, we are now in a period in which the shade trees planted or left standing by early Illinois settlers are rapidly deteriorating and are dying in large numbers. There is always an interest in the planting of new trees in new places, but we must not fail to recognize the heritage in trees left us by the early settlers. We have a definite obligation to care for the old trees to make them last as long as we can, to replant where old trees have died, or start replacements where the old trees are sure to die, and to set out new trees as cities progress and as new farmsteads are built. Book Studies of Trees Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies of Trees Classic Reprint written by J. J. Levison and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies of Trees IN presenting this volume, the author is aware that there are several excellent books, dealing with one phase or another of tree life, already before the public. It is believed, how ever, that there is still need for an all-round book, adapted to the beginner, which gives in a brief and not too technical way the most important facts concerning the identification, structure and uses of our more common trees, and Which considers their habits, enemies and care both when grow ing alone and when growing in groups or forests. In the chapters on the identification of trees, the aim has been to bring before the student only such characters and facts as shall help him to distinguish the tree readily during all seasons of the year. Special stress is laid in each case on the most striking peculiarities. Possible confusion with other trees of similar appearance is prevented as far as possible through comparisons with trees of like form or habit. Only such information is given concerning the structure and requirements of trees as will enable the reader better to understand the subsequent chapters. In the second half of the book, practical application is made of the student's general knowledge thu's acquired, and he is acquainted with the fundamental principles of planting, care, forestry, wood identification and nature study. The author recognizes the vastness of the field he is attempting to cover and the impossibility of even touching. Book Forests and Trees Classic Reprint

Download or read book Forests and Trees Classic Reprint written by B. J. Hales and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forests and Trees This book has been written to assist in impressing upon the young the value of our forests and to give them some appreciation of what is being done, as well as of what must yet be done, in order to preserve them. It is not a handbook on forestry, but contains interesting information which, it is hoped, will tend to create a healthy public opinion regarding the use and care of trees. While the book is really the expression of that appreciation of trees which comes only from long and intimate acquaintance, yet the literature on the subject has been freely used, and the author wishes to acknowledge the help received from the following: Sargent's "Manual of the Trees of North America"; Britton's "North American Trees"; Fernow's "Care of Trees"; Britton and Brown's Illustrated Flora of the Northern States and Canada; "Gray's New Manual of Botany" by Robinson and Fernald; Rydberg's "Flora of the Rocky Mountains and Adjacent Plains"; Coulter and Nelson's "Rocky Mountain Flora;" and Macoun's "Catalogue of Canadian Plants." Very particular mention should also be made of the many excellent publications of the Forestry Branch of the Department of the Interior; and special thanks are due to Mr. R. H. Campbell, Director of Forestry, for valuable suggestions and assistance, as well as for a very careful and suggestive reading of the proof sheets by the staff of the Forestry Branch. There are a great many questions, both of princi ple and practise, about which keen differences of opinion exist among experienced men. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trees and Trees and How to Care for Them: With Appendix of Morris' Nursery Catalogue; A Book Prepared for Those Interested in Horticulture Dear Sirs -the fruit trees, vines, etc., you sent me last winter have done very well although they were nearly two months enroute. They reached us here in Central China in good condition. I put them out at once and have taken good care of them. Out of the fruit trees and grape vines only four died and the balance are growing nicely. About one-sixth of straw berries, only, survived the trip; but these are doing well. At least four fifths of blackberries and raspberries lived and are growing rapidly. So we hope in a couple of years to have fresh California fruits growing here in Central China. Book Northwestern Pomology

Download or read book Northwestern Pomology written by C. W. Gurney and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Northwestern Pomology: A Treatise on the Growing and Care of Trees, Fruits, and Flowers in the Northwestern States In presenting this little volume to my brother Horticulturists and Orchardists I shall make no apologies, neither shall I make any great claim especially to literary merit. The work is not prepared to show how much the author knows, for the wisest of us know but little, but for the sole purpose of giving such careful, practical information as the author in his earlier experiences stood so much in need of, and for which he has frequently spent on a single trivial matter, many times more than the cost of this volume entire. This work will, as its name implies, be restricted to the "Northwest." There are very many and very excellent works upon Horticulture, but, with one exception, none have been restricted to any particular locality. The exception named is "Warder's American Pomology." This is a most valuable work, and will, while there remain upon the earth lovers of trees, plants, flowers and fruit, be an indispensable text book. But, although it purports to be restricted and dedicated to the Northwest, Dr. Warder lived in Cincinnati, Ohio, and this locality was, at the time the book was written, pretty well Northwest.
