Book Pharmacological Control of Heart and Circulation

Download or read book Pharmacological Control of Heart and Circulation written by L. Tardos and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pharmacological Control of Heart and Circulation, Volume 1, documents the proceedings of the 3rd Congress of the Hungarian Pharmacological Society held in Budapest, 1979. Because the papers published in this volume cover diverse areas of the cardiovascular field, they had to be arranged into several smaller symposia. The common thread running through these symposia is their focus on some pathological condition of the heart and circulation as well as on their control by drugs. The first symposium is devoted to the pharmacological control of the adverse effects of coronary insufficiency including disturbances in rhythm. The second symposium is dedicated to cardiac hypertrophy; to the action of cardiac hypertrophy on the sensitivity of the heart to drugs; and to the changes in the biochemical parameters of the myocardium due to cardiomegaly. The third symposium deals with hypertension and its pharmacological control. Two separate symposia are devoted to new drugs, namely the fourth symposium to the cerebrovascular activity of Cavinton—a synthetic Vinca-derivative; and the fifth to a newly developed beta-adrenergic blocking agent, Tobanum, to its anti-arrhythmic action, its effect in myocardial ischemia and in hypertension. Finally, a short symposium on serotonin and serotonin antagonists, both of great importance in cardiovascular pharmacology, is included.

Book Current Concepts in Cardiovascular Physiology

Download or read book Current Concepts in Cardiovascular Physiology written by Oscar Garfein and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current Concepts in Cardiovascular Physiology examines seven different areas related to the field of cardiac physiology. In addition to the biochemistry and receptor pharmacology of the heart, this book explores coronary physiology, cardiovascular function, and neural and reflex control of the circulation. The electrophysiology and biophysics of cardiac excitation are also considered, along with humoral control of the circulation. This monograph consists of seven chapters and opens with an overview of the biochemistry of the heart, with emphasis on cardiac energy metabolism and the ways in which metabolism and the biochemical pathways are controlled. The mechanisms whereby physiological events influence biochemical activities and vice versa are also discussed. The following chapters look at the chemistry and physiology of myocardial receptors; the complex interplay between the nervous and cardiovascular systems; and the chemical and hormonal factors that regulate, modify, and modulate the cardiovascular system. The influence of humoral, neural, intrinsic, vascular, and myocardial factors on coronary blood flow is also examined, along with muscle mechanics; the biochemical basis of contraction; cardiac function; and the factors determining the heart's electrophysiologic behavior. This text is directed primarily at clinical cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, and trainees in their disciplines, as well as internists, medical students, and house officers.

Book Pharmacology of the Coronary Circulation

Download or read book Pharmacology of the Coronary Circulation written by Natalii︠a︡ V Kaverina and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Diseases associated with impairment of the coronary circulation are very common. Hence, the treatment of such diseases is a matter of considerable importance. It is now considered one of the main problems of clinical medicine. The basis for solving the problem is to enlarge our knowledge of the mechanisms of action of the drugs used to treat coronary insufficiency and to find new effective agents. Owing to the complexity of physiological regulation of the coronary circulation, there are many difficulties of a procedural order in studying it experimentally. This was one of the reasons why ideas on the action of many pharmacological agents were derived until recently from the results of experiments involving the isolated heart. When applied to the intact organism, these ideas proved to be inexact and, at times, wrong. Some ideas on the effects of certain drugs were based on experiments involving the intact organism, but the data proved to be inexact due to the inadequacy of the method selected by the authors to determine the mechanism of action of a given substance. Another reason for misconceptions of the effects of some drugs stemmed from insufficient knowledge and contradictory opinions expressed by various investigators on many aspects of the coronary circulation. Now, however, advances in experimental techniques have produced new facts bearing on the physiological regulation of the cardiac blood supply. This has given rise to the need to reexamine some matters concerned with the influence of pharmacological agents on the coronary circulation, relying on modern ideas concerning its physiological regulation and using adequate experimental techniques. Most drugs have complex mechanisms of action owing to the intimate relationship between the processes regulating the cardiac blood supply. Elucidation of these mechanisms requires the use of various techniques, each of which must be suited to the particular aspect under study. This approach will result in a reappraisal of the action of several pharmacological agents on the coronary circulation. Moreover, we believe that the data in this book will be helpful in making more efficient use of these agents in the treatment of various forms of coronary insufficiency."--Introduction
