Book Forms of Late Modernist Lyric

Download or read book Forms of Late Modernist Lyric written by Edward Allen and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2021-11-03 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do we mean when call something a lyric poem? How many kinds of lyric are there? Are there fewer now than there were in 1920 or 1820 or 1620? The purpose of Forms of Late Modernist Lyric is to show that our oldest styles of poetic articulation – the elegy, the ode, the hymn – have figured all too briefly in modern genealogies of lyric, and that they have proved especially seductive, curiously enough, to avant-garde practitioners in the Anglophone tradition. The poets in question – Jorie Graham, Frank O’Hara, Michael Haslam, J. H. Prynne, Claudia Rankine, and others – have thickened the texture of lyric practice at a time when the growing tendency in critical circles has been to dissolve points of difference within the genre itself. The broader aim of this volume is to demonstrate that experimental poets since 1945 have not always been rebarbative and anti-traditional, but rather that their recourse to familiar forms and shapes of thought should prompt us to reconsider late modernism as a crucial phase in the evolving history of lyric. Book Lyrics of the French Renaissance

Download or read book Lyrics of the French Renaissance written by and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2006-10 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned translator Norman R. Shapiro here presents fresh English versions of poems by three of Western literature’s most gifted and prolific poets—the French Renaissance writers Clément Marot, Joachim Du Bellay, and Pierre de Ronsard. Writing in the rhymed and metered verse typical of the original French poems (which appear on facing pages), Shapiro skillfully adheres to their messages but avoids slavishly literal translations, instead offering creative and spirited equivalents. Hope Glidden’s accessible introduction, along with the notes she and Shapiro provide on specific poems, will increase readers’ enjoyment and illuminate the historical and linguistic issues relating to this wealth of more than 150 lyric poems. “A marvelous micro-anthology of sixteenth-century French letters. Representing the pinnacle of French Renaissance verse, the poems singled out here are sensitively interpreted in rhymed English versions. . . . There is a pleasant and inspiring craftsmanship in these interpretations.”—Virginia Quarterly Review

Book Hardy s Lyrics

Download or read book Hardy s Lyrics written by B. Green and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Hardy frequently insisted that his poems were not self-expressive, but dramatic or 'impersonative'. Yet biographical expositions have dulled their impersonality. Brian Green's approach is more exacting and rewarding; taking Hardy at his word, he traces Hardy's 'master theme' throughout the corpus of poems - a governing concern which merges Victorian and perennial ideas throughout the whole of Hardy's writings.
