Book Carbohydrate Metabolism

Download or read book Carbohydrate Metabolism written by F. Dickens and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbohydrate Metabolism and its Disorders focuses on the processes and methodologies involved in carbohydrate metabolism, including detection of diabetes, hypoglycemic syndromes, cardiovascular diseases, and atherosclerosis. The selection first takes a look at the detection of diabetes in man, hormonal disturbances in diabetes, and hypoglycemia. Topics include indications for testing for diabetes, reasons for early detection, testing for diabetes with tolbutamide, glucagon, corticosteroids, and hypoglycemic syndromes. The book also ponders on the physiological aspects of carbohydrate metabolism in the fetus and newborn and glycogen-storage diseases. The publication examines dietary intake of carbohydrate in relation to diabetes and atherosclerosis and glucose tolerance in ischemic cardiovascular disease. Discussions focus on epidemiological studies of diabetes and atherosclerosis, overt diabetes mellitus, and effects of selection, age, obesity, and other factors. The book also identifies disturbances of the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates; insulin antagonists and disturbances in carbohydrate metabolism; and glycosaminoglycans in joint disorders. The selection is a valuable reference for readers interested in carbohydrate metabolism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 18 million people in the United States have diabetes mellitus, and about 90% of these have the type 2 form of the disease. This book attempts to dissect the complexity of the molecular mechanisms of insulin action with a special emphasis on those features of the system that are subject to alteration in type 2 diabetes and other insulin resistant states. It explores insulin action at the most basic levels, through complex systems.

Book Metabolic Response of Slowly Absorbed Carbohydrates in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Download or read book Metabolic Response of Slowly Absorbed Carbohydrates in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus written by Meidjie Ang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-02 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This SpringerBrief focuses on clinical nutrition research, particularly on the effects of slowly absorbed carbohydrates on postprandial glucose metabolism in type 2 diabetes. Slowlyabsorbed carbohydrates will cause gradual increases in blood glucose and insulin levels, and may therefore be effective as part of a treatment strategy for glycemic control and reduction of cardiovascular complications in type 2 diabetes.

Book Carbohydrate Metabolism in Pregnancy and the Newborn IV

Download or read book Carbohydrate Metabolism in Pregnancy and the Newborn IV written by Hamish W. Sutherland and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditions are dangerous; doubly so in science. Traditions are unchanging; science is about change. This was the 4th International Colloquium on Carbohydrate Metabolism in Pregnancy and the Newborn to be held in Aberdeen, and by now the form is set. How much its content has changed is a matter of nice judgement and not under the control of the organizers. It is not within their power to bring news of revolution, if there has been no revolution. Certainly many of the speakers had kent faces from previous Aberdeen meetings, but so they would be at any meeting on diabetes anywhere in the world. The written proceedings of scientific conferences have purposes other than to record changes: sometimes they need to state a consensus. The 3rd Colloquium came to an agreement about the importance of prepregnancy recognition and control of abnormalities of carbohydrate metabolism. The 4th set out to examine what results it had achieved. Much of this book is taken up with follow-up studies of the applications of similar regimes in different parts of the world. Since the first Aberdeen meeting in 1973, progress in the manage ment of diabetic pregnancy has been slow and steady, but the change in the city and the society where the meetings took place has been fast.

Book The CNS Control of Glucose Metabolism

Download or read book The CNS Control of Glucose Metabolism written by E.H. Grote and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the clinic at Giessen during the last few years there has been an extensive programme of research into the various aspects of lesions of the diencephalon and brain stem and the associated autonomic and metabolic disturbances. As a continuation of this research programme Ernst Grote has investigated the central neuronal and hormonal factors acting on the peripheral regulation of glucose metabolism and their diverse inter-relationships. This research was made possible not only by the availability of well-documented clinical and experi mental material with primary and secondary lesions of the hypo thalamus and brain stem, but also by the advances in clinical endo crinology and the development of radio-immuno-assays. By continuous systematic investigation of the basic values and their reaction to stress-tests, as well as to trauma and operation, he has elucidated the basic facts of the central and peripheral mechanisms which are concerned in the regulation of glucose, and also their disturbances. Of particular significance are his descriptions and interpretations of the characteristic hypothalamic syndromes, as combinations of hyperglycaemia, hyperinsulinaemia and hyperglucagonaemia; dif ferent syndromes are produced by lesions at various levels of the brain stem and in central brain death. From this starting point it was possible to develop a rational treatment of this hormonal dys regulation by means of somatostatin.

Book Clinical Research in Diabetes and Obesity Volume 2

This volume discusses the methods of clinical research and the interpretation of their results in studies of normal individuals, obese subjects, and patients with diabetes mellitus. Along the way, the authoritative contributors writing here illuminate how changes in the hormone action and substrate metabolism of healthy humans may lead to obesity and noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.

Book International Textbook of Diabetes Mellitus

Download or read book International Textbook of Diabetes Mellitus written by R. A. DeFronzo and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-03-11 with total page 1200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Textbook of Diabetes Mellitus has been a successful, well-respected medical textbook for almost 20 years, over 3 editions. Encyclopaedic and international in scope, the textbook covers all aspects of diabetes ensuring a truly multidisciplinary and global approach. Sections covered include epidemiology, diagnosis, pathogenesis, management and complications of diabetes and public health issues worldwide. It incorporates a vast amount of new data regarding the scientific understanding and clinical management of this disease, with each new edition always reflecting the substantial advances in the field. Whereas other diabetes textbooks are primarily clinical with less focus on the basic science behind diabetes, ITDM's primary philosophy has always been to comprehensively cover the basic science of metabolism, linking this closely to the pathophysiology and clinical aspects of the disease. Edited by four world-famous diabetes specialists, the book is divided into 13 sections, each section edited by a section editor of major international prominence. As well as covering all aspects of diabetes, from epidemiology and pathophysiology to the management of the condition and the complications that arise, this fourth edition also includes two new sections on NAFLD, NASH and non-traditional associations with diabetes, and clinical trial evidence in diabetes. This fourth edition of an internationally recognised textbook will once again provide all those involved in diabetes research and development, as well as diabetes specialists with the most comprehensive scientific reference book on diabetes available.
