Book excerpt: Durante el tercer trimestre de 2005, sesenta productores ovinos fueron encuestados con objeto de caracterizar la producción ovina en explotaciones de la Provincia de Ñuble, Región del Bio Bio, Chile. La información fue recolectada según el método no probabilístico denominado bola de nieve. Como primer paso, se llevó a cabo un análisis descriptivo de la producción ovina y en la etapa final se elaboró un análisis de conglomerados a fin de determinar tipologías de producción según homogeneidad de características productivas y técnicas de los grupos formados. Los resultados muestran que la producción ovina se agrupa en tres tipologías, cada una de ellas caracterizada por estar constituida por explotaciones manejadas en base a sistemas productivos homogéneos. Las tipologías denominadas como 1 y 2 se caracterizan por una tendencia a la producción extensiva, con gran incidencia de praderas en mal estado, escasa infraestructura especializada, baja incidencia de registros y manejo reproductivo mayoritariamente sin orden respecto de la estacionalidad de praderas y requerimientos de animales. Un tercer grupo existente incluye unidades productivas semi-intensivas con mejoras en casi todos los índices. Sin embargo, se mantiene la tendencia a utilizar praderas de secano y a comercializar los ovinos en el mismo predio, orientados al mercado local.

Book excerpt: La Provincia de Ñuble concentra el 59 % de la masa ovina de la Región del Bío - Bío, que se encuentra principalmente en manos de pequeños y medianos productores. Para implementar mejoras que promuevan el desarrollo en los predios es necesario evaluar la diversidad existente entre ellos. De acuerdo a lo anterior, el objetivo de este estudio fue caracterizar e identificar tipologías en sistemas productivos de ovinos con aptitud carnicera de la Provincia de Ñuble, basándose en la información obtenida a partir de una encuesta aplicada a 101 empresas ovinas. La primera etapa correspondió a un análisis descriptivo, en tanto que la segunda correspondió a un análisis de cluster, llevado a cabo para identificar grupos de explotaciones con características similares. De esta forma se identificaron 4 grupos de explotaciones ovinas a partir de 23 variables que comprendían aspectos productivos y de gestión. En general, las empresas ovinas estudiadas presentan un alto grado de homogeneidad, encontrándose índices productivos muy similares entre las tipologías, deficientes manejos de los rebaños en lo referente a uso de registros, época de encaste, problemas sanitarios y comercialización.

Zimmerer's multidisciplinary investigation in geography. Zimmerer challenges current opinion by showing that the world-renowned diversity of crops grown in the Andes may not be as hopelessly endangered as is widely believed. He uses the lengthy history of small-scale farming by Indians in Peru, including contemporary practices and attitudes, to shed light on prospects for the future. During prolonged fieldwork among Peru's Quechua peasants and villagers in the mountains near Cuzco, Zimmerer found convincing evidence that much of the region's biodiversity is being skillfully conserved on a de facto basis, as has been true during centuries of tumultuous agrarian transitions. Diversity occurs unevenly, however, because of the inability of poorer Quechua farmers to plant the same variety as their well-off neighbors and because land use pressures differ in different locations. Social, political, and economic upheavals have accentuated the unevenness, and Zimmerer's geographical findings are all the more important as a result. Diversity is indeed at serious risk, but not necessarily for the same reasons that have been cited by others.
