Book The Mechanism Of Life

Download or read book The Mechanism Of Life written by Stephane Leduc and published by . This book was released on 2024-02-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Mechanism of Life" is a groundbreaking work by the French physiologist and biochemist Stéphane Leduc, originally published in 1911 under the title "La Biologie Synthétique." In this influential book, Leduc explores the idea of a mechanistic approach to understanding the fundamental processes of life, challenging traditional biological perspectives of his time. Leduc was a proponent of the concept that living organisms could be understood through principles of physics and chemistry, akin to a machine. He proposed that life processes could be explained through the physical and chemical interactions of living matter. Leduc's work was particularly notable for its attempt to synthesize life-like phenomena in the laboratory, using chemical substances to create structures resembling cells and even imitating some aspects of cellular functions. One of the key concepts in "The Mechanism of Life" is the idea of osmotic phenomena, wherein Leduc explored the role of osmosis in cellular processes. He conducted experiments involving the formation of artificial cells, referred to as "osmotic growths," by encapsulating various substances in semi-permeable membranes. Leduc's work was met with both acclaim and criticism. While some praised his innovative thinking and experimental techniques, others were skeptical of his mechanistic approach to understanding the complexity of living organisms. Over time, some of Leduc's ideas fell out of favor as the field of biology evolved, embracing more nuanced and holistic approaches to studying life. Despite its eventual historical context, "The Mechanism of Life" remains an important work in the history of biology, as it reflects an early attempt to bridge the gap between physics, chemistry, and the intricacies of living organisms. The book provides valuable insights into the scientific thinking of its time and the evolving understanding of life processes.

Book Biological Invasions in Europe and the Mediterranean Basin

Download or read book Biological Invasions in Europe and the Mediterranean Basin written by F. di Castri and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In view of the massive change in the area of distribution of many world biota across classical biogeographical realms, and of the drastic restructuring of the biotic components of numerous ecosystems, the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE) decided at its general Assembly in Ottawa, Canada, in 1982 to launch a project on the 'Ecology of Biological Invasions'. Several regional meetings were subsequently organized within the framework of SCOPE, in order to single out the peculiarities of the invasions that took place in each region, the behaviour of their invasive species and the invasibility of their ecosystems. Most noteworthy among such workshops were one in Australia in August 1984, one concerning North America and Hawaii in October 1984, and one dealing with southern Africa in November 1985. A leitmotiv of these workshops was that most of the invasive species to those regions were emanating from Europe and the Mediterranean Basin, inadvertently or intentionally introduced by man. It was therefore considered as a timely endeavour to organize the next regional meeting in relation to this region. The workshop on 'Biological Invasions in Europe and the Mediterranean Basin' was held in Montpellier, France, 21 to 23 May 1986, thanks to the financial support of SCOPE and of the A.W. Mellon Foundation, and the logistic facilities of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (C.N .R.S.).

Book Comprehensive Treatise of Electrochemistry

Download or read book Comprehensive Treatise of Electrochemistry written by Peter Horsman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now time for a comprehensive treatise to look at the whole field of electrochemistry. The present treatise was conceived in 1974, and the earliest invitations to authors for contributions were made in 1975. The completion of the early volumes has been delayed by various factors. There has been no attempt to make each article emphasize the most recent situation at the expense of an overall statement of the modern view. This treatise is not a collection of articles from Recent Advances in Electro chemistry or Modern Aspects of Electrochemistry. It is an attempt at making a mature statement about the present position in the vast area of what is best looked at as a new interdisciplinary field. Texas A & M University John O'M. Bockris University of Ottawa Brian E. Conway Case Western Reserve University Ernest B. Yeager Texas A & M University Ralph E. White Preface to VoluIJJe 8 The past three decades have seen the rapid evolution of the transport aspects of electrochemical engineering into a formal part of electrochemistry as well as chemical engineering. With minor exceptions, however, this subject has not been systematically covered in any treatise or recent electrochemical text. The editors believe that the treatment in this volume will serve the function.

Book Prehistoric Warfare and Violence

Download or read book Prehistoric Warfare and Violence written by Andrea Dolfini and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-20 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to explore prehistoric warfare and violence by integrating qualitative research methods with quantitative, scientific techniques of analysis such as paleopathology, morphometry, wear analysis, and experimental archaeology. It investigates early warfare and violence from the standpoint of four broad interdisciplinary themes: skeletal markers of violence and weapon training; conflict in prehistoric rock-art; the material culture of conflict; and intergroup violence in archaeological discourse. The book has a wide-ranging chronological and geographic scope, from early Neolithic to late Iron Age and from Western Europe to East Asia. It includes world-renowned sites and artefact collections such as the Tollense Valley Bronze Age battlefield (Germany), the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Tanum (Sweden), and the British Museum collection of bronze weaponry from the late Shang period (China). Original case studies are presented in each section by a diverse international authorship. The study of warfare and violence in prehistoric and pre-literate societies has been at the forefront of archaeological debate since the publication of Keeley’s provocative monograph ‘War Before Civilization’ (Oxford 1996). The problem has been approached from a number of standpoints including anthropological and behavioural studies of interpersonal violence, osteological examinations of sharp lesions and blunt-force traumas, wear analysis of ancient weaponry, and field experiments with replica weapons and armour. This research, however, is often confined within the boundaries of the various disciplines and specialist fields. In particular, a gap can often be detected between the research approaches grounded in the humanities and social sciences and those based on the archaeological sciences. The consequence is that, to this day, the subject is dominated by a number of undemonstrated assumptions regarding the nature of warfare, combat, and violence in non-literate societies. Moreover, important methodological questions remain unanswered: can we securely distinguish between violence-related and accidental trauma on skeletal remains? To what extent can wear analysis shed light on long-forgotten fighting styles? Can we design meaningful combat tests based on historic martial arts? And can the study of rock-art unlock the social realities of prehistoric warfare? By breaking the mould of entrenched subject boundaries, this edited volume promotes interdisciplinary debate in the study of prehistoric warfare and violence by presenting a number of innovative approaches that integrate qualitative and quantitative methods of research and analysis.

Book Archostemata Myxophaga Adephaga

Download or read book Archostemata Myxophaga Adephaga written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-08-28 with total page 1477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of the Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera gives a taxonomic overview of the most diverse group of all organisms living in the world-largest biogeographical area. The present volume is an updated edition of the first issue in 2003 but restricted to data published before the year 2000. It contains information about 33,914 taxa (together with synonyms), and increases the number of included species and other taxa by almost 5,000. In addition, thousands of species have their distributional data completed, and their ranks, systematic positions and nomenclature corrected. Almost two hundred new acts fix systematics and nomenclature, and numerous problems are discussed. Even such well known genera as Calosoma and Carabus, or tribes as Bembidiini and Panagaeini, are completely reorganized compared to the previously published catalogues. Thus, the work is a scaffold for biotic surveys, ecological studies, and nature conservation. It responds to the urgent need of an assessment of the still remaining forms of life, threatened by the on-going destruction of habitats. Taxonomy provides the basic building blocks of our understanding of the diversity of life. It stems from innate human curiosity: confronted with an unknown species we ask first “what is it”? Taxonomists recognize species and other systematic entities (taxa), define them and place them within the framework of known organisms, providing means for their subsequent identification.
