Book excerpt: Momento is a collection of human experiences and the technological dreams triggered by our cameras. With each camera is a story told by its owner. The cameras were photographed using a19th century glass plate negatives, emphasizing how quickly the technology of past image-making has been made antique. The cameras capture our experience in mere fractions of seconds, but the cameras themselves endure to reflect the technology and aspirations of their eras. The memories we connect to the cameras are significant, sentimental and cherished. The cameras themselves evoke memories of meaningful moments in our lives that are as vivid and vital as the pictures they captured.

Book Street Photography

  • Author : Gordon Lewis
  • Publisher : Rocky Nook, Inc.
  • Release : 2015-03-25
  • ISBN : 1457188996
  • Pages : 209 pages

Download or read book Street Photography written by Gordon Lewis and published by Rocky Nook, Inc.. This book was released on 2015-03-25 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the advent of the camera, there have been photographers whose mission is to record and interpret the public sphere in all its aspects. Eugene Atget documented evidence of everyday life in the streets as well as the buildings and monuments of Paris. Henri Cartier-Bresson pursued what he called "The Decisive Moment," the moment in which the meaning of an event was most clearly captured in a photograph. Their work, and that of many other masters, has inspired generations of photographers to wander public spaces, camera in hand, searching for meaningful moments in time. Success requires the street photographer to be proficient with their equipment, to be constantly aware of their surroundings, and to have a keen eye. Quick reflexes and self-confidence are essential: Street photographers know from experience that hesitation or procrastination could mean missing a once-in-a-lifetime shot. The adage "it's better to ask for forgiveness than permission" was probably coined by a street photographer. In Street Photography: The Art of Capturing the Candid Moment, Gordon Lewis helps readers understand and conquer the challenging yet rewarding world of street photography. The book includes discussions of why photographers are drawn to street photography, the different styles of street photography, and what makes a great street photograph. Lewis then goes on to explore how the choice of location can change a photographer's approach to image capture: from city streets to fairs to beaches, Lewis discusses the impact different environments have on the process of street photography. Another crucial element to becoming a good street photographer is learning to travel light, with minimal equipment. Lewis gives readers practical advice on everything from cameras and lenses to camera bags and clothing. Lewis also delves into the techniques and approaches that will help novices master the art of street photography. Whether your style is to engage your subjects or to remain unnoticed and take candid portraits, Lewis offers ideas on how to capture fascinating moments in time: a gesture, expression, or composition that may exist for only a fraction of a second, but can leave a lasting impression of the wonders, challenges, and absurdities of modern life.

She also knows what stands in the way of obtaining those images. In Moments That Matter, she answers the questions parents ask most frequently about photographing their children and shares the techniques that will capture and share the unique story of their family life. Farrah recognizes that camera manuals are scary. Her accessible, step-by-step instructions follow the format of her popular workshops, include clear examples, and follow an intuitive progression. Here are simple, powerful tools that will transform the way parents imagine and take photographs. She covers both point-and-shoot and DSLR cameras and emphasizes that the equipment is not the secret to powerful photography. Each section includes practice instructions that will have readers producing the photographs of their dreams in no time.Introduction by Brene Brown, Author of New York Times #1 Bestseller Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead: I'm not very creative doesn't work. There's no such thing as creative people and non-creative people. There are only people who use their creativity and people who don't.The only unique contribution that we will ever make in this world will be born of our creativity. If we want to make meaning, we need to make art. If these findings didn't emerge from my own research, I wouldn't have believed them. I spent my entire adult life being too busy strong arming the to-do list for creativity, art, or crafts. So, when I found that creativity is key to wholehearted living, I was inspired to make a change. I wanted to become a photographer. There was only one problem. I'm forgot how to be new at something. I forgot about that awkward, uncomfortable process that defines the gap between wanting to take pictures like the ones I see in the magazines and having no idea how to use my camera or set up a shot. Then I met Farrah. My husband actually set me up with her on a friend date. He's her pediatrician and, truthfully, I think he thought we shared the same work/balance anxiety so he recommended we meet for lunch. When I told her about my new foray into photography she offered to take on the challenge of teaching a not-good-at-being-new, creativity-fearful, and want-everything-to-be-perfect budding photographer.Farrah changed my life. Not only is she a gifted artist, she has a long teaching history AND she's a trained counselor. She can nail every party of the technical challenges, teach in way that makes it crystal clear, and she can talk you through the frustration and vulnerability that is the joy (and struggle) of making art.I wanted to take pictures of my children, my extended family, and the ordinary moments of my everyday life. I showed her both my favorite pictures from magazines and the pictures that I had taken over the years. She taught me composition by pointing out the differences between the photos I loved and the ones didn't quite capture what I was trying to capture. She taught me about complicated issues like aperture and light by making me practice with my son's transformers and shooting thousands of pictures next to every window in my house (and I'm not exaggerating). One of my favorite teaching moments happened one day when I was trying my new macro lens and I couldn't get anything to work right. I called her and she said, Go into your front yard, get on our stomach, aim your camera at the caterpillar on the leaf, and turn on your camera. I said, Okay, I'll call you back and let you know how it goes. She said, Nope, you're taking me with you. I'm staying on the phone. I'll never forget army-crawling through my flowerbed with my phone in one hand and my camera in the other.Dive into this book. Start anywhere. Take thousands of shots. Screw most of them up. Then find that one. No one can walk you through it like Farrah. She has the photography, teaching, and hand-holding skills to help us capture the moments that matter.

Book Capturing the Moment in Oils

Download or read book Capturing the Moment in Oils written by David Curtis and published by Batsford Books. This book was released on 2015-07-30 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the attractions of painting outdoors is the challenge of capturing the spirit of a place – changing light, weather and transient conditions demand particular painting skills if they are to be interpreted effectively. Leading painter David Curtis works on location, in all weathers, observing and capturing the subtle effects of light and mood. Oil paint is as good for painting on site as it is for large-scale painting in the studio; it is remarkably responsive; can be applied in many different ways; and it allows time to assess and modify work in progress. In this fascinating book, David Curtis shows how he achieves such expressive and original results using drawings, paintings and stage-by-stage examples. He gives detailed explanations of his two main working methods – for plein-air paintings and for studio compositions – as well as plenty of helpful guidance and advice on choosing materials, exploring techniques, selecting ideas, composition, colour and tone and associated topics. Drawing skills and interpreting the qualities of light are other key issues that he deals with, while his wonderfully evocative landscapes, coastal scenes, interiors and figure compositions provide much inspiration.

Book Capturing the Beat Moment

Download or read book Capturing the Beat Moment written by Erik Mortenson and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2010-11-02 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title Examining “the moment” as one of the primary motifs of Beat writing, Erik Mortenson offers the first book to investigate immediacy and its presence and importance in Beat writing. Capturing the Beat Moment: Cultural Politics and the Poetics of Presence places an expanded canon of Beat writers in an early postmodern context that highlights their importance in American poetics and provides an account of Beat practices that reveal how gender and race affect Beat politics of the moment. Mortenson argues that Beat writers focused on action, desire, and spontaneity to establish an authentic connection to the world around them and believed that “living in the moment” was the only way in which they might establish the kind of life that led to good writing. With this in mind, he explores the possibility that, far from being the antithesis of their times, the Beats actually were a product of them. Mortenson outlines the effects of gender and race on Beat writing in the postwar years, as well as the Beats’ attempts to break free of the constrictive notions of time and space prevalent during the 1950s. Mortenson discusses such topics as the importance of personal visionary experiences; the embodiment of sexuality and the moment of ecstasy in Beat writing; how the Beats used photographs to evoke the past; and the ways that Beat culture was designed to offer alternatives to existing political and social structures. Throughout the volume, Mortenson moves beyond the Kerouac-Ginsberg-Burroughs triumvirate commonly associated with Beat literature, discussing women—such as Diane di Prima, Janine Pommy Vega, and Joyce Johnson—and African American writers, including Bob Kaufman and Amiri Baraka. With the inclusion of these authors comes a richer understanding of the Beat writers’ value and influence in American literary history. !--?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /--
